If LTT just mentioned Lemmy it would double the daily users over night :D

At this point, my biggest dream is that these 'new user' distros used only Wayland, Pipewire, Systemd and Flatpaks simply to simplify things. Hopefully we're less than 2024 away from NoVideo Wayland support.

Also as soon as XFCE releases their Wayland support, that soon it'll become the most famous DE choice of Mint.

What I am really happy is to see how well supported Pipewire already is. Pipewire has never showed any problem in the new installs for me.

There's no need to be sorry for being noob. I also recognized that from your original post.

Fast and short bash-scripting course with actually useful tasks:

For cron write 'man cron' into your terminal and read the manpage docs on how to use cron. As already suggested 'crontab -e' is the command you need, but a quick look in the docs explains you how it actually works.

I don't give you direct answers simply because I want you to learn Linux by yourself and enjoy the benefits of it :)

Write a bash script and add that script into cron job.

That's your opinion and that's fine. For me, open hardware + hot swappable mechanical keyboard + trackpoint + designed to be repaired + the general opennes are the reasons why Virgo comes to my desk.

Framework is good for many and thanks to LTT will sell more units but I've been only with Thinkpads since 2008 so Coreboot + trackpoint are must-haves for me.

The icon has an animal which is known as 'Jerboa'. But in Android one of the easiest tasks is to change the app icon and its name into any.

I think the most enjoyable feature is that there is no algorithm in Fediverse. And decentralization means that if you host your own server for Pixelfed (instagram equivalent) for example, your data will go offline at the moment you disconnect your server from the internet.

Lemmy is great alternative for Reddit especially if you're into tech.

I will write a guide for you via editing so others don't need to after they see this message.

Yes. 1 hard drive is enough. 2 provides you few steps less (as in manual partitioning), but the end result is exactly the same in both scenarions.

I hope your storage drive(s) is ssd and not hdd. If not, I highly recommend to buy at least used ssd (my oldest ssd is from 2010 and still works).

Manual partitioning varies a bit between Linux distros, so google the guide for the distro you want ro install.

Windows overrides and formats the Linux boot partition, so install Windows first and at the partitioning "window" write the amount of storage you want to give for Windows and it handles everything else automaticly. If your Windows is already installed, then shrink your drive with the amount you want to use in Linux. Windows has a tool named Disk Management for shrinking the drive.

In Linux you need at least two partitions; boot (In Linux terms: /boot/uefi) and root (in Linux terms: / ). But like I said, Google/Youtube a guide for your distro of choice.

Have you chosen which distro you'll use? If not, format your biggest usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and it'll be the last time you ever format your usb stick. Just drag and drop any Linux .iso and try them in Live mode without the need to format or install anything before you've chosen which distro you like the most. Linus Tech Tips showed Ventoy2Disk in his latest video.

Try at least Pop_OS! and Linux Mint since they are very beginner friendly distros.

Dual boot isn't the easiest way to start your Linux journey, but I hope you have fun while learning new skills. If you have anything to ask, don't hesitate, just ask.

Any popular distro will work equally good. The downside is that you have a NVIDIA gpu and it doesn't work with Wayland. Nvidia said they'll release Wayland support before end of the current year but let's see.

For the best Nvidia support out of the box you'd probably try Pop_OS! first. But you can just format your biggest usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and just drag and drop any file into it and test the distro in live mode before installing anything until you've found your favorite distro. At this point you choose the one which satisfies your eyes most.

There's also Nobara Linux, which is created and maintained by the Linux gaming legend GloriousEggroll, but it is unclear to me does it provide any benefit over other distros.

So it's a positive problem! Thank you all for doing the great work!

Virgo by System 76 is already designed for board-level repairs. All the schematics is already available, and will be found on their website when ready for production:

https://github.com/system76/virgo

Actually Soller said, that they will release everything needed to start your own production line. Has Framework released the schematics yet?

I've followed Louis Rossmann for more than 5 years and despite his channel has gone completely into opposing politics in wide themes, I haven't got anything else out of his political views than that he is a democrat despite he opposes Biden and deBlasio in general.

For me, as a very anti-political follower and hater of every politician and party, I really admire how Louis has ability to oppose and point out the problematic themes in omnious way and always unrelated to party, which I find very rare in the US.

I had to turn the chat off because I was actively helping Linux noobs and then they sent too many private messages to me.

I had Alpine on my Thinkpad E15 amd and after a decade with seamless Arch it was constant struggle with Alpine. Every compile required extra packages and constant problem solving because Google doesn't provide any answers.

I'm not saying Alpine is bad or anything negative. I think the devs does great job and apk is a great package manager. It is either lack of my dev skills or Alpine not meant for desktop use made me to go back to Arch.

I still wish that project stays alive and keeps evolving. Especially for servers and PostmarketOS.

I don't know what this 'gallium' is. But your computer has a powerful x86 cpu, so any regular distro will work just fine.

Becuse it is your first distro, it should be something well documented (large user base) and stable.

I recommend you to format your biggest usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and it'll be the last time you'll ever format.

With Ventoy you can try any distro in Live mode without installing anything in your computer before you're found your favorite.

Try at least Pop_OS! and LMDE5 (LMDE6 is released within a few weeks) over regular Mint and here's why: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=374128

Virgo will have features which can't be found from Framework:

  • Trackpoint
  • Open Source Bios
  • Hot swappable mechanical keys
  • full sized up and down arrow keys (not splitted in half)
  • Motherboard is designed and most likely manufactured too in Colorado, US

I've watched 4K Youtube on that cpu without issues.

Haha this is fun project. Youtuber 'Dave's Garage' spend years with annual six figures to create this tool.

Do you have a gpu in your pcie slot or do you use integrated gpu?

Because you have a desktop, I'd recommend to use 2 separate disks. Because if you manage to break the Linux system (it might happen if you heavily tinker/customize your Linux and manage do some mistake) then you can just re-install the Linux and start again.

If you have 2 storage drivers, then unplug the Windows drive when you (put tape and write Windows onto it) are installing the Linux. Then the computer will manage the partitioning automatically, so less work for you.

Don't fear the tinkering/customizing. That's one big joy in Linux, lol. Remember to backup at least your personal files.

I use usb stick with Ventoy. I copy it into .config and add a line for aliassrc into .bashrc and I'm all set.

Great article. I lived 40+ years before giving any attention to any fonts at all.

Well, for Pipewire it's the apps which needs to adjust at this point. Only thing missing currently is the Wayland but it's coming. Making Linux less fragmented (read: confusing), the more new users will give a try.

How I could get a 55" 4K Monitor without internet, microphones cameras and with blazing fast boot time?

Newsboat integrates RSS and Youtube (or piped.kavin.rocks which is privacy front for Youtube). It launches your Youtube videos in your video player of choice. I bet MPV is the most lightweight video player.

I've used Newsboat for 3 years and after hard hassle during the first days it has given me easily the best ad-free news and Youtube-experience.

I bought an used color laser printer meant for business. Drivers made by manufacturer for Linux and Windows are bad as always, but CUPS for Linux works really well.

I wish there was a right-to-repair and privacy friendly printer, which required only Creative Commons drivers in Windows, and no bs, poorly made drivers + control software as always. Luckily rgb is becoming standardised.

This is what I originally wrote:
