Hm, ok. Lets say that the goal of TikTok is to be overstimulating, to catch your attention and provide bursts of dopamine. I'd argue that any form of entertainment (like books for example) aim to do the same, albeit on a less intense scale. Yes, you could say that books require patience and commitment unlike the short form content of Tiktok. But I wouldn't say they're opposites.

Probably watching paint dry would be the opposite? That would require an almost meditative/zen state

I think I may been in a similar situation here? A while back someone posted a screenshot of a twitter post that highlighted how trans people make up a tiny proportion of the population, yet political parties make a disproportionate deal out of them. And I totally agree with the sentiment, but I was interested in how the statistics were worked out. But apparently me asking about that showed that I was trying to distract from the point?

I just wanted to know more really šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Reddit feels very hollow to me, and it's something I've noticed more having avoided it for several months. On the Steam Deck subreddit for example, nearly all the posts are 'hey I just got my Deck!' and it's just people fishing for upvotes. Endless pointless posts and rarely any meaningful discussions. I don't think Reddit is dying and I hope it doesn't, because every now and then it's super useful when you find some old post from 2011 where the poster had the exact same niche IT issue as you with a helpful solution. The culture in general over there sucks though.

I've found a good mix of serious and lighthearted content on Lemmy.

On one hand, I can kinda understand - translation would be costly for a game that is unlikely to attract new subscriptions.

On the other hand, fans have already translated it - so you're better off emulating the game lol.

I played the remastered Spyro trilogy recently (great games) and it took me about half of the first game to work out how the gem chests work. You hit them and the gem shoots out the top, which you then have to grab before it returns in order to unlock the chest. For a while I thought you just had to ground pound the chest at the right angle to get it to open and I couldn't work out why it didn't always work.

After realising the correct way I felt pretty dumb lol.

Weird, it shows as a png for me šŸ¤”

I think this model can work, and has its benefits (like with Game Pass). To be clear though, Ubisoft's offering is shit and not worth the price they're asking. And one thing I absolutely hate is the (sometimes timed) exclusivity on some of these platforms. The Lost Crown looks great for example, but Ubisoft are trying to force people to use their service by not offering it on Steam.

Personally I don't really mind not 'owning' the game in most cases. 9 times out of 10, I'll play a game and be done with it. Short, linear indie games for example are perfect for a Game Pass type model. What we don't need is 10 similar subscriptions with their own exclusives.

Fucking hell America, what's going on over there at the moment?

So apparently this is something to do with a series called Kamen Rider and a character's phone from it??

Edit: the phone is also a gun?

I finally got round to picking up a PS5 this week and have been really enjoying Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart - it's just beautiful to look at and genuinely fun to play. Looking forward to more of that over the weekend! I've also been trying out Astro's Playroom, the free tech demo that comes with the console. I was half expecting it to be a gimmicky piece of advertising - but it's really well made! The platforming is excellent and all the little references to games are cute.

:3

Ah neat! The first Splitgate was fun and I put a fair few hours into it. It felt like it had been abandoned by the devs after a while though (and cross progression wasn't possible, which put me off playing it after I got a Steam Deck). I'm interested to see what they do with a bigger budget.

What kind of beans are we talking about here?

I think the templates should be limited in size perhaps - if you look at the intended template location post from the other day, yes the Australian flag is significantly larger than the other submissions. However on the final canvas, people have drawn within the blue space of the flag which is actually quite cute. I don't think 'defacing' is necessary, but rather a continuation of (at least what appears to me to be) a symbiosis where overlapping images work together.

So I guess I'd like to see drawing accepted on top of any large continuous blocks of colour.

P.s. I love what Canada did - the outline on top of the flag looks really cool!

That's weird, I thought he died in a hot air balloon incident

Yeah I think having just one big game on the go is a good idea - spreading your attention too thin between games probably lessens your enjoyment of all of them!

I'm a little bad for this as I'm currently playing one game on PS5, Steam Deck and Switch each. But I stick to one game per console and it seems to work ok. I like having a variety of games to play depending on my mood - 3 seems a good limit. But when I do play each, I make sure to focus on that particular game for a while and not let myself get distracted by the others.

Ghost of Tsushima - Took a while to click, but now I'm really enjoying it. Pulling off some of the sword moves perfectly feels so satisfying. And it's gorgeous to look at.

And also Dave the Diver. Very charming game and it keeps adding more and more layers to the gameplay. The gameplay loop is really fun so far.

The 8Bitdo Pro+ has been great - works really well with my Steam Deck and Switch. Sounds like the Pro 2 is the superior version with hall effect sticks.

The Switch Pro controller has always been good too. And the DualSense is really neat with the haptics and adaptive triggers - expensive, but not that much more than a Pro controller surprisingly.

I've just finished playing RealMyst (god that had some tricky and sometimes convoluted puzzles), and installed Bloodstained last night. So will hopefully start that later - I've heard good things!
