Capitalism literally Weekend at Berniesing the corpse of Robin Williams for profit.

This is fine

The people have a right to know

In the tech world drug users, particularly of hallucinogens, probably make up the top 10%.

Sorry about that, it does feel a bit ambiguous doesn't it?

I think I just wanted to gauge other people's thoughts and brainstorm a bit but if you feel it'd be better to move it I can do that, your call.

"Improve the world we live in [for rich white people]"

Ohh, I've seen this one, it's a classic!

Wearable > implantation

Just a security concern. Augmenting is great but we don't want the augmentations to become a liability. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, if we invent a robotic arm replacement for someone who's lost one, the security concerns are generally lower than the quality of life improvement of having a functioning arm 99% of the time, and there's an argument for the potential ability for rapid detachment in case of emergency, but once we get into subdermal and brain implants, we're in a territory where these things can't be easily removed in case of emergency, and the risks get immense.

I may have also wanted to complain about c/memes today in a roundabout way in retrospect XD

They don't just want to, they're succeeding.

lol literally nothing will happen because literally nothing ever does. Everything is farce now.

I think the concept of a mascot or poster child for Lemmy is somewhat antithetical to the concept of federated social media. Kind of a no gods no masters situation.

Fascists gonna fasc

That might become an unfortunate but inevitable result of any English-language site that's large enough, since by the numbers Americans make up a plurality (and possibly a majority) of the English-speaking world. It might be that the only counter to that is moderation and local site culture.

Britain showing 'lack of respect'

Also, the sun is warm

"Omae wa mou shindeiru"

"NANI?!"

That's what's worrying to me. If they federated and started brigading communities, that's one thing, but I don't think they even have the numbers to meaningfully do that to start with. It feels like ideological censorship.

Not sure, but I guarantee you he never gets hit in the chin

I mean, they're opinionated but we've nothing concrete to suggest they'll be invasive or detrimental to other instances. Even lemmygrad generally keeps their stuff to their instance.

is there a Linus 2?

There was but Carmen Ortiz took care of that little problem, if you know what I mean 😉

Oh, that could be useful

Also, my memory might need some work but was there talk about multis at some point?

I believe the same is true in Vermont and Maine, but 2 out of 50 isn't great.

If you can take away the right to vote as punishment for a crime, and make anything a crime, then you can take away anyone's right to vote. This reinforces the concept of the 'precariat'.

I'm surprised I had to scroll down this far for chamomile

That you don't see the problem

Then he's a popular lord

I mean, if I wanted a walled garden I'd just go back to Reddit. Federation is part of lemmy's beauty, but if the imposition of a particular mindset through defederation becomes the norm, why would anyone respond with anything but defederation?

In short: why tolerate intolerance?

And the lord is back in his fiefdom

I've actually been a big fan of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for a long time so thank you for bringing it up and indulging me in a happy nostalgia. I've heard it described variously over the years as possibly the first or at least early science fiction, as well as even proto-feminist in its more subtle themes. Might be a good time to return to it. There are some potentially Luddite themes as well but in an era when people were en masse encountering rapid technological advancement while philosophical approaches to that rapid advancement were still in their infancy it's a forgivable flaw.

That seems like an argument from tradition though. Just because something has default become some way doesn't mean it has to remain so. I think there's bigger principles at play, censorship of minority opinions for starters.

"Every president has backed this genocidal state. Why try to stop the trend now?"

Could we shorten them to Comms?

He’s like fascist shitty, whereas Bush was neo-con shitty.

Corporate would like you to find the difference between these two pictures.

According to Wikipedia, it's a non profit with a for profit subsidiary. Interpret that how you will. Nothing shady or deceptive here.

Anything involving software that uses the word "open" in its title should be legally required to be open source.

.world domination

😏

It won’t be a problem until .world starts demanding mutual defederation

To invoke the fallacy that isn't always fallacious (slippery slope) that seems like the logical next step. If they amass too much power and are already abusing it this way, what's to prevent them doing this next?

"But that's the point", Tech Leaders responded.

That moment when you laugh so hard you cry

But you don't have the money to pay people to tell you otherwise.

I mean, depending on the number of owners, a private company like Reddit (per Wikipedia) can function internally like a dictatorship or oligarchy. Occasionally they can be benevolent, but consider dictatorships in nations: how many of those are benevolent?

Ultimately, anything less than workplace democracy (like Mondragon) will likely devolve into rampant exploitation at some point in time, and even they aren't completely immune, just generally less bad than their alternatives.
