We thank Elon for his effort in getting people to the fediverse 🙏🙏

For those who don't get it, the japanese community shortens 'Lee gu macchi' (league match) to 'Li gu ma' (ligma)

!accidentalrenaissance@lemmy.blahaj.zone for us lemmy folks

...why did they make two comms though when kbin and lemmy work together?

In order to be truly independent from platforms like Reddit, communities need to be owned by their members in ways that platforms cannot take away.

What the fuck lmao you can't make this shit up 🤣🤣

They literally admitted the problem, but they're doubling down on siphoning even more money from their users instead

Much better

They've also been on Mastodon (@elonjet@mastodon.social) for about 8 months with 66k followers already

And that's why people should spread out, as is the entire point of decentralization

The only person that can crack denuvo right now.

Clearly fucked in the head but there's no other option.

The Dutch government already made an official mastodon instance: social.overheid.nl

The Netherlands just can't stop being based

From what I understand, they're likely trying to kill the fediverse by making it irrelevant (embrace, extend, extinguish) seeing how it's finally starting to grow, since they can't just buy it up this time like they've always done to competitors.

Even aside from that though, their algorithms designed to retain user attention by any means necessary are definitely going to seep into and poison the fediverse, at least indirectly, if they're federated.

Not to mention they could easily run ads as normal posts and boost them artificially; they are an ad company after all. Wouldn't put it past them.

Not federating with them means we don't have to deal with all that, and the fediverse can just continue to grow naturally as it's been doing.

Federating on the other hand means a very real risk of permanently halting the fediverse's growth in favour of corporations', like Google did to XMPP

anyone

Lol, it's just on mac. No windows version or even plans for a Linux one. Not that I'd use another chromium fork.

If there's one company you should preemptively block, it's Facebook. They have a track record of destroying anything and everything they touch and there is zero reason to think it won't be the same this time. From this post:

They aren’t some new, bright-eyed group with no track record. They’re a borderline Machiavellian megacorporation with a long and continuing history of extremely hostile actions:

  • Helping enhance genocides in countries
  • Openly and willingly taking part in political manipulation (see Cambridge Analytica)
  • Actively have campaigned against net neutrality and attempted to make “facebook” most of the internet for members of countries with weaker internet infra - directly contributing to their amplification of genocide (see the genocide link for info)
  • Using their users as non-consenting subjects to psychological experiments.
  • Absolutely ludicrous invasions of privacy - even if they aren’t able to do this directly to the Fediverse, it illustrates their attitude.
  • Even now, they’re on-record of attempting to get instance admins to do backdoor discussions and sign NDAs.

If the instances properly moderate according to their rules and ban rule-breakers, then yes.

The toxic users will coagulate into isolated instances instead

Satire now but honestly doesn't seem very far off, with how willing people are to give up their privacy to megacorps

On that note, why would they decline tests in the first place? You're the one paying.

Voat any% speedrun WR (glitchless)

Honestly? That's great. It's stress-testing Lemmy and, to an extent, ActivityPub.

Growing pains. It's just gonna improve Lemmy in the long term.

If you don't like it, use another smaller instance like lemmy.zip or lemm.ee. You know, the entire point of decentralization.

That UI though holy shit

I wish gimp had UI this good. Krita and Inkscape seem to have that down perfectly.

Fanatics and extremists exist regardless of religions. The latter just allows them to control people easier, and islam happens to be particularly good at that.

Of course, most 'religious' people have enough common sense to not follow them to the T. When the government is religious though, like islam encourages, you have a big problem

How is this shit allowed? It's so blatant.

Also, just use Firefox. Faster than chrome these days anyway, and is officially opposing google's drm garbage.

Lemmy as a whole not being hurt even if some domains are gone is the entire point of being decentralized. But yeah, it's really bad that communities made there will also be gone as it is now.

We need user and community migration like Mastodon has, and quick.

If someone going to get sued for it. It will be dbzer0.com and lemmy.ml due to said communities being part of the instances not LW.

Don't instances cache the content from federated instances? I can still view content from vlemmy.net from other instances, even though it's been permanently shut down.

From the OP:

Doesn't matter if they are hosted here or not. The way federation works is that threads on different instances are cached locally.

We have NO issues with the people at db0 - we are just looking out for ourselves in a 'better safe than sorry' fashion while we find out more. As mentioned in the OP we would like to unblock as soon as we know we can not get in any legal trouble.

Reddit has gotten into legal trouble numerous times regarding r/piracy, despite it not hosting any copyrighted material either.

Why is anyone complaining about instances not taking the same legal risks as a massive corporation? Just use another instance that fits your needs.

And kind of a console too lol with the steam deck

This is great! The Dutch government made their own official instance (social.overheid.nl) too!

At this point it's literally just easier to use any Linux distro

How many billions of dollars are they sending to Israel's military so they can genocide the natives again?

39 more...

I think putting quotation marks around the title copied from the toot would help

Would be a far better use of the 'defense' budget than what they're currently spending it on.

Jews are the natives

A war 1400 years ago does not justify colonizing and slaughtering natives right now. Surely you can see how fucked up that is?

By that logic, can African Americans or Chinese Americans return to their respective continents, occupy an entire country by displacing its current population, and claim it as their ancestral land? How delusional.

And since when is "the period of Judah" an accurate historical reference point?

Theodor Herzl, founder of Zionism, was just a racist colonizer, and saw it as bringing 'civilization' to 'barbarians' as the rest of Europe did when they were colonizing and enslaving Africa and Asia:

"We should there form a portion of a rampart of Europe against Asia, an outpost of civilization as opposed to barbarism. We should as a neutral State remain in contact with all Europe, which would have to guarantee our existence." Source [II]

That is exactly what's happening right now. All for European and US military and economic interests in the region; for their ruling class of capitalist corporations at least.

Israel is just a modern western colony committing genocide on natives. It's keeping the middle-east divided and preventing them from uniting against the Imperial core.

Gaza has been an open-air prison trapping the natives the whole time. And you're trying to deny their right to fight back against colonizers and settlers? They're literally openly colonizing the West Bank right now with their whole "Area C" garbage. It's disgusting.

want to help support their backwards culture of misogyny

Jesus christ, the US and Europe are the ones constantly keeping the Middle East at war to keep oil cheap and military profits high, and keeping them from making societal progress. And I'm saying that as an ex-Muslim. This is literally British colonialist era racist thinking of seeing 'the other side' as barbarians.

The PFLP, the second largest Palestinian liberation group after Fatah, calls for a secular Palestinian state where Jews, Muslims, Christians, etc. will live together in peace. Modern Fatah even accepts a two-state solution (and they have every right not to).

Only Hamas is mixing up Zionists with Jews, and that's entirely because of Israel and the Imperial core's constant oppression, displacement, and now genocide of the natives.

I much prefer this over how lemmy.blahaj.zone defederated the entire lemmynsfw.com instance for one post the admins didn't like.

Heh, "Boost"

This is what's important of course. No need to do anything about the genocide they're funding.

I hope this keeps up. Nothing would be better than corpo-owned social media dying out.

Very bad for some people like artists in the short term, specially if they haven't made an account somewhere else yet, but a centralized platform's eventual decline and death is inevitable to begin with, really. Twitter's is just happening much faster than expected.

Mastodon really needs to step up its ease-of-use though. For one, the apps should auto-assign users to instances based on their selected interests (letting them change it of course). It also has lots of minor inconveniences like the reply and like counts only showing interactions from your own instance, unlike Lemmy. Both Lemmy and Mastodon also have major discoverability issues right now.

Firefish looks great though, and I hope Bluesky's protocol makes itself compatible with ActivityPub, even if with a bridge between the two.

I created this world.
