What a disgrace. This clown show of a company kills things people love and pushes advertising no one wants.

I’m glad they’re leaving the old site, but Discord serves different purposes and isn’t a replacement. I’d recommend they start a Lemmy community.

Good lord they are only 11 years old. Who cares what bathroom they use.

I’m not sure what to think about this. It’s bizarre, the White House making any recommendations on programming languages.

They’re definitely not seen as an authority in this field. Why would anyone care what recommendation they make? And so why make one at all?

Holy smokes! Honestly I don’t know if we have or will make much of a dent in r*ddit, but at this point I don’t care. We’re building a new enthusiastic community and doing it fast. It’s a lot of fun.

How bizarre. I mean, you’re trying to pay them money.

Freenom gives away domains, many of which are used by phishers and other bad actors. Meta is suing them for not being responsive to their complaints about this. And I guess the injury inflicted on their users by phishers.

Thank you as always for the transparency. This instance is going to be the most targeted because of its size. Y’all dealing with this is hard but you’re going to figure things out that will help the other instances.

Agreed. I know that many moderators around here have never modded before, and no doubt some admins have not dealt with growth on this scale. Good job y'all!

Holy crap are you kidding? Mastodon IIRC requires zero priviliges/personal information to run.

Also, what the hell does it need "headphone status" for?

Musk can do whatever he wants, keeping Twitter (sorry, X, yuck) alive with billions that are peanuts to him. This news isn’t a surprise to me. He talked big about free speech, but it was just talk.

If one wanted to really screw the AI, I’d replace each post/comment with nonsense generated by ChatGPT itself on a higher-than-normal temperature setting. AI would be training on its own generated content, and out of context as well.

I’m so glad to see this. There have been several studies that show social media is terrible for the mental health of minors.

The “yes” is selected.

It's such a weird time in the U.S.. Also, it might be a better choice to go to a battleground state.

The entire text of Reddit has been archived up through February 2023. Compressed it’s close to 2TB and you can get it here: https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/

Duckduckgo actually uses Bing for search results. Unless something changed.

Have you tried blocking the users in question?

Yes. Be able to choose the right life insurance plan, investments, etc for my beneficiaries.

Gemini Ultra is out now. Gemini Pro has been out for a while, powering Bard. They’ve now ditched the “Bard” name, which I think is a good idea.

I was a paying customer and would not have been affected by this. But it seemed like a crappy move and I didn’t support it, so I ended my subscription. I’ve switched to Obsidian, which is significantly better.

Thanks as usual for the transparency, y’all.

I have run both Plex and Jellyfin and I much prefer Jellyfin. I got sick of Plex content being interjected into my menus and feed. Plex also had issues seeing my server which was inconvenient. I now run Jellyfin with Infuse as my client. Love it so far.

The current version has a replaceable battery, so I don’t see any reason to upgrade to some other device.

That’s where the protest is. The bare minimum.

Agree agree agree. Mod away, but let garbage, dupes, and low effort stuff gradually fill up the sub. See how the userbase reacts to neglectful moderation.

Holy crap. I don’t, but after seeing that I think I’ll need to start

the federal government doubled down on its own commitment to heat pumps, announcing $169 million in funding

I am grateful the government is investing in this. I would like to see them even more, bilions

Makes me wonder which Republican has the best chance then. My bet is someone who is not at the lead of the fundraising pack as of yet. Nikki Haley? Chris Christie?

Good to see, but as with all posts like this, it’s important to note that the really important number is “Active Users” That number has gone up significantly as well, just not as fast as number of accounts.

edits made using this generative AI tech will result in a watermark and metadata changes

The metadata is easy to erase. It’s only a matter of time until we start seeing some open source projects come out that can remove the watermarking the AI players are starting to try.

Absolutely. I don't think that's a bad thing.

What I do worry about somewhat is multiple forks of the codebase that differ so much as to cause bugs when instances try to interoperate.

There’s the old Nike slogan “Just do it” that captures the idea while having positive connotations.

High school graduation. There was really nothing to do about it, sitting through all the long speeches, in piercing pain. Ran straight for the stalls after.

Like others have mentioned, it’s a book. I recommend reading it. Also another dystopian novel, “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Lessons to be learned from both.

I've been trying to figure this out myself. The best I can come up with is that Meta wants to increase their user base as fast as possible and this is one way of doing it.

Another thought I had is that they could be thinking of getting Twitter to add ActivityPub, and then federating with Twitter. Meta could then claim all users can use their platform.

In an interview with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson in April, Musk said teased plans for his new AI venture. “We’re going to start something which I call TruthGPT,” he said, describing it as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that “cares about understanding the universe.”

Sigh. When did this guy turn into a clown?

I love the idea of Friendica. Unfortunately I can’t imagine any of my friends/family IRL switching away from big tech social media.

Shrug. Welcome to the community, admin.

One thing that helps here is that I can see exactly how many upvotes and how many downvotes a post/comment has, instead of an aggregated amount. It adds a level of responsibility, I think?

Also if you don’t like it, there are instances like Beehaw that don’t even allow downvotes.
