removing/reducing

The kids still have exposure, but the total load is reduced allowing the body to see and react to the infectious elements without being overwhelmed. All of the "but it's nature" fanatics should remember that the million years of evolution we have survived with exposure was done without enclosed, poorly ventilated boxes. And within the historical record, the some of the greatest failures of our "natural" immune system prior to vaccines and antibiotics have generally occurred when we enclosed people into poorly ventilated, densely packed communities. (though many failures come from drinking our own poo...usually due to densely packed populations with unregulated water standards/supplies)

Based on my observations, disallowing (checks notes) males from owning or operating guns would seem to be a near universal solution.

What’s impressive is how they have gerrymandered the state to have this kind of majority in a state with 20% more registered democrats than republicans (36% vs 30%, with 33% unaffiliated)

Since even inadvertent or unintentional copying can be punished as infringement, any takedown should be subject to the same level of scrutiny and false claims should be awarded statutory damages matching infringement of registered works, collectible by the party who’s non-infringing work was blocked, but actionable by any party who is denied access. So if you can’t get to content due to DMCA you can sue, but you cannot recover damages or expenses - if you win, the $175k(?) per fraudulent take down is payable to the content owner. In that way, it’s recognized that an individual looking for content is injured by the takedown, but there is no financial incentive for take-down vigilantism.

These types of uses make ChatGPT for the non-write the same as a calculator for the non-mathematician. Lots of people are shit at arithmetic, but need to use mathematics in their every day life. Rather than spend hours with a scratch pad and carrying the 1, they drop the numbers into calculator or spreadsheet and get answers.

A good portion of my life is spent writing (and re-writing) technical documents aimed at non-technical people. I like to think I'm pretty good at it. I've also seen some people who are very good, technically, but can't write in a cohesive, succinct fashion. Using ChatGPT to overcome some of those hurdles, as long as you are the person doing final compilation and organization to ensure that the output is correct and accurate, is just the next step in spelling, usage, and grammar tools. And, just as people learning arithmetic shouldn't be using calculators until they understand how its done, students should still learn to create writing without the assistance of ML/AI. The goal is to maximize your human productivity by reducing tasks on which you spend time for little added value.

Will the ML company misuse your inputs? Probably. Will they also use them to make your job easier or more streamlined? Probably. Are you contributing to the downfall of humanity? Sure, in some very small way. If you stop, will you prevent the misuse of ML/AI and substantially retard the growth of the industry? Not even a little bit.

It's not worth the cost. There aren't enough 20+ year old macs in the wild who need to connect to a DVI monitor to make the assembly commercially viable after tooling costs.

Though it's a very good representation of why non-standard connection schemes are a terrible idea. I would say that outlawing black mock turtlenecks would be an appropriate punishment, given that Steve Jobs is dead and we can't kill him a second time. But that would also seem unfair as it would mean we would have to all see Panos Panay shirtless all the time. That just punishes the rest of us.

I think I read your title differently - as in, gravity would ebb and flow like wind or rain or barometric pressure or temperature. In normal days the gravity might be mostly constant, or may fluctuate a few percent as the day goes on, rising and falling over the diurnal cycle. But at times a gravity storm could blow through, causing wild fluctuations from just a few percent (or even reversing!) to a couple hundred percent, causing travelers to lose their un-secured cargo or to be pinned in place until the storm subsides. Locals would know the dangers and have things easily tied down, or beds for riding a gravity storm in relative comfort, but any huge storms people would evacuate, praying that the fluctuations wouldn’t destroy their homes or farms. (And now I’m imagining the end of O Brother Where Art Thou with the cow on the roof)

Fascinating interview around the technology. As someone who is generally skeptical of wild "zero carbon" claims, this was interesting enough that I would definitely go out of my way to see the process in person, just to learn more about it.

You can't have a transaction without mining. Mining is the work done to solve a batch of transactions, so the exact cost of a transaction is easy to determine provided that you don't include the cost of plant (buildings and IT to run the miners, though this is usually very minor compared to the actual calculation consumption). Each block contains (typically) between 3000 and 4000 transactions and is solved every 10 minutes. As of today, it takes 2.6GWh to solve a block, given the current number of miners (137TWh/yr per https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption), which is 744kWh per transaction at 3500 transactions per block.

The cost of a Visa transaction is more difficult because there are people involved and other plant costs (buildings to house the people who work for Visa). The actual cost to process a Visa transaction, in direct transactional power usage, is trivial because a Raspberry Pi can "process" hundreds of thousands of transactions a second locally - it's literally a couple hundred bytes of login/query/reply data, and adding or subtracting from a ledger which is mirrored to distributed servers. Distributed across a server with enough transactions to keep it busy it's probably a few hundred milliseconds on 1/8 of a 50W processor - call it 0.001Wh at the server, which is the equivalent of the 700kWh per bitcoin transaction. If we say that there are 10 machines all doing the same virtual transaction on each physical transaction (incl. POS, backup, billing, etc) and we figure a 5:1 cost of total power (a/c, losses, memory, storage) then we're all the way up to 0.00005kWh (0.05 Wh, or 180 watt-seconds) per transaction. That means that the overall cost for visa to process your charge is 1.5kWh/0.00005kWh for the computers or 30,000:1 due to humans being involved in the process.

Here's the thing, though: Bitcoin gets harder (more compute intensive) as time goes on, and the rate of increase is faster than the ability to solve, on a Wh basis. IE - Bitcoin transactions will get more expensive over time unless bitcoin changes their code - and there is always resistance to that because there is a financial disincentive to reduce the work in Proof of Work systems. This is mitigated on other blockchains by using Proof of Stake, but that has other implications. Visa, otoh, is taking advantage of AI and drops in processor and storage costs to lower their per-transaction cost because there is a financial incentive to reduce processing costs as the fees charged are fixed (nominally 3% of the transaction cost) and anything left over is profit.

I sat in a room of probably 400 engineers last spring and they all laughed and jeered when the presenter asked if AI could replace them. With the right framework and dataset, ML almost certainly could replace about 2/3 of the people there; I know the work they do (I'm one of them) and the bulk of my time is spent recreating documentation using 2-3 computer programs to facilitate calculations and looking up and applying manufacturer's data to the situation. Mine is an industry of high repeatability and the human judgement part is, at most, 10% of the job.

Here's the real problem. The people who will be fully automatable are those with less than 10 years experience. They're the ones doing the day to day layout and design, and their work is monitored, guided, and checked by an experienced senior engineer to catch their mistakes. Replacing all of those people with AI will save a ton of money, right up until all of the senior engineers retire. In a system which maximizes corporate/partner profit, that will come at the expense of training the future senior engineers until, at some point, there won't be any (/enough), and yet there will still be a substantial fraction of oversight that will be needed. Unfortunately, ML is based on human learning and replacing the "learning" stage of human practitioner with machines is going to eventually create a gap in qualified human oversight. That may not matter too much for marketing art departments, but for structural engineers it's going to result in a safety or reliability issue for society as a whole. And since failures in my profession only occur in marginal situations (high loads - wind, snow, rain, mass gatherings) my suspicion is that it will be decades before we really find out that we've been whistling through the graveyard.

IKR? Like, this is a feature, not a downgrade. TBH, my recommendations are pretty good when I see the sidebar, but I'd be 100% okay to never see them since I generally only go to youtube for specific content, not for entertainment.

Well, lots of normal people due this not for profit, which is just as damning in the eyes of copyright.

But what if they had done this in a legitimate fashion - say they got a library account and just ordered the books one by one, read them in, and then returned the books. As I understand it (which is not very well, tbh) the LLM don't keep a copy of the original reference. They use the works to determine paths and branches in what I assume is a quasi-statistical approach (ie stable diffusion associates characteristics with words, but once the characteristics are stored in the model the original is effectively discarded and can't actually be recreated, except in the way a child might reproduce a picture from memory.)

If the dataset is not, in fact, stored, would the authors still have a case?

I don't think the "indicators" are a useful metric of personal betterment, which is what makes individual people feel better about the economy. Stock market being up, interest rates and inflation going down, productivity up and salaries on the increase are all positive conditions. But if your salary isn't rising as fast as the combined inflation of the past 4 years and all of your companies profits are feeding dividends and stock buy-backs instead of plant expansion and increasing benefits then it's a net negative in your bank account at the end of the month. Insurance rates - auto, health, homeowners (esp if you're coastal) are soaring up, which hits the average pocketbook but probably has no weight in economic indicators. Lord help you if you're paying tuition or taking out loans for college. It's more than $4000 per class at a typical state university, if you're not subsidized by scholarship or the state.

It doesn't help that the news cycle is (somewhat rightly) pointing out how imbalanced and broken the socioeconomic system is.

Wait until people find out what their smart watches are already cataloging. 🙄

There is nobody else with the name recognition or independent/middle clout - the swing voters the Ds need to win. Who are you going to put up - Kamala? Bernie? The middle/middle-right would rather stay home and sit on their hands while Trump drags out his base in the big red states. The best possible outcome is for Biden to take the economic momentum into a win and then step down and give the next generation 3+ years to forge their path. Of course, if you're a Lefty, you don't want Kamala either, so the only option is for the entire administration to step away and watch a true Left slate fail miserably in every swing state.

The advantage of LVLs are that

  1. you can put them up 1 ply at a time
  2. they hold nails/cut easily
  3. the lumber yard will likely size them for you if you ask

The disadvantage is that the depth will be about 1/16th of the span when using 2-3 plies.

The advantage of steel is that an I beam (W shape is what you want, for "Wide Flange Beam") will be about 2/3 the depth of an LVL. The disadvantages are

  1. An engineer will likely charge you about $600-800 to size this beam, but will also tell you how to top connect it
  2. It will be one piece (fwiw it will weigh about the same as the LVL)
  3. You will have to buy a 40' piece, or pay a premium to have it cut down from a 40' piece. (stock lengths of steel are 20'/40')

Note that nobody can properly answer your question from the data given (edit - just notice you mentioned 16' rafters below). You would need to include the span of the rafters and (at least) your location to determine the snow loads and wind loads (edit: and seismic, though it's unlikely to control for this design) for sizing the connections.

At this point, I think the only possible solution, aside from the obvious and cheaper life without parole, is to move to a pneumatically operated guillotine. We know that any post-separation convulsions are entirely disconnected from the brain. Sure, it's a little messy, but retribution and vengeance have their drawbacks. Just clean up the mess or stop executing people.

On a realistic note, I would not be surprised that holding his breath led to his "torture" with CO2 building up in his blood as he intentionally writhed and resulting in actual discomfort as the body reacted to the CO2 even as the lack of oxygen in the breathing mix caused him to lose consciousness. It's his final act to make a posthumous case (real or sensational) against his executioners. I find it hard to imagine that trace CO2, in even welding N2, would be sufficient to cause a reaction unless they intentionally got a gas mix (I don't weld with N2, but 75Ar/25CO2 is very common for MIG).

If you don't need access to iMessage or are not part of the iCloud ecosystem (i.e. do most/all of your work on a Mac), it's still not worth it. I switched ~3-4 years ago for iMessage and the Lidar sensor. The lidar is shit for technical work, or really anything other than the simplest in-phone diversions. If iMessage were available on Android I'd almost certainly swap back. It's not that the phone is bad, per se, just that there are weird limitations that pop up from time to time that wouldn't exist with an Android device.

Edit: I was going to jump on the 15 for the USBC, but I'll probably wait for the hype to die down unless I get a sweetheart upgrade deal from my provider. My airpod case is still lightning, so there's no economy for me in getting my phone switched over.

a toy for professional workloads

I think this is one of those words which has lost its meaning in the personal computer world. What are people doing with computers these days? Every single technology reviewer is, well, a reviewer - a journalist. The heaviest workload that computer will ever see is Photoshop, and 98% of the time will be spent in word processing at 200 words per minute or on a web browser. A mid-level phone from 2016 can do pretty much all of that work without skipping a beat. That's "professional" work these days.

The heavy loads Macs are benchmarked to lift are usually video processing. Which, don't get me wrong, is compute intensive - but modern CPU designers have recognized that they can't lift that load in general purpose registers, so all modern chips have secondary pipelines which are essentially embedded ASICs optimized for very specific tasks. Video codecs are now, effectively, hardcoded onto the chips. Phone chips running at <3W TDP are encoding 8K60 in realtime and the cheapest i series Intel x64 chips are transcoding a dozen 4K60 streams while the main CPU is idle 80% of the time.

Yes, I get bent out of shape a bit over the "professional" workload claims because I work in an engineering field. I run finite elements models and, while sparce matrix solutions have gotten faster over the years, it's still a CPU intensive process and general (non video) matrix operations aren't really gaining all that much speed. Worse, I work in an industry with large, complex 2D files (PDFs with hundreds of 100MP images and overlain vector graphics) and the speed of rendering hasn't appreciably changed in several years because there's no pipeline optimization for it. People out there doing CFD and technical 3D modeling as well as other general compute-intensive tasks on what we used to call "workstations" are the professional applications which need real computational speed - and they're/we're just getting speed ratio improvements and the square root of the number of cores, when the software can even parallelize at all. All these manufacturers can miss me with the "professional" workloads of people surfing the web and doing word processing.

You're not selling me here. Specifically because using ChatGPT in the role you are talking about is exactly what software developers have been doing for years - putting humans out of work. To use your own description, I could ask a software team to "Give me a calendar app" and a team of software devs, testers, and QA will produce a will go about working to make sure you have a robust, secure and properly architected app which will them obsolete thousands upon thousands of secretaries across the world. They were fully employed making intelligent decisions about their bosses schedules, managing conflicts, and coordinating with other humans to make sure things ran smoothly - and you caused nearly all of them to be fired and replaced with one or two low-paid data entry clerks who don't understand the business or why certain meetings and people have priority over others.

We can go on. Bank tellers? Most of them fired thanks to automated machines. Copywriters? Some lazy programmer puts a dictionary in word and all of a sudden 90% of all misspellings are going. Usage? Yup - getting rid of most of those too. We can go back further to when telephone switchboards were automated and there was no need to talk to someone to make your connection. Sure, those people are dead now, but they wouldn't have jobs if they were alive. And all of those functions were automated to mimic, and then exceed the utility of, humans who used to do that work. Everything from the cotton gin and mechanical thresher to a laser welder and 5DOF robotic assembly station are eliminating jobs. Artists fearing losing their jobs to ml generation? Welcome to the world of modern old school photography. Modern photography, of course, is digital and has destroyed the jobs of hundreds of thousands or millions of analog photography jobs.

The only difference this time is that its you, or people of your intellectual station, who are in the crosshairs.

Pack it up - This dude Barron laid out an opinion piece five years ago saying the Justice was wrong. Debate's over, laws go back on the books, Scalia will be impeached and removed.

Seriously, the opinion page of WaPo is just Medium for connected people. I love reading the post for in-depth stories and to check on the local section for news of my home town, but I wouldn't even wrap fish with the Opinion section.

Amazing how that platform continues to exist

There's a lot of really engaging shot-form content on the platform; most people assume it's just a firehose of what you see when you log in anonymously.

and people actually get their news from there

It's a poor substitute for a healthy set of reading, but it's also a way people put things happening "now" online. Not unlike choosing your broadcast or print media, the results can be really interesting or really misleading (or both; okay, often both)
