Is it bad that I hope this is a sign of medical issues that will force him into retirement? I'm sick of a misogynist turtle calling the shots.

I was just a kid at the time but still remember the media making a huge villain out of Sinead. They made it seem like she was mentally unstable, but she was just years ahead of everyone else. I'm sad that she didn't get to see this outpouring of support and appreciation while she was alive. She died far too young, and I hope it wasn't by suicide. I hope she wasn't in pain.

There have been plenty of movies and shows based on this so I guess I'm more confirming a poorly kept secret than I am revealing it, but;

If you go out to eat in a college town (esp if it's a state school,) there's a good chance that almost every employee (managers, bartenders, servers, you name it) is drinking or smoking pot out back, if not in the middle of an active bender. We'd fill our water bottles with alcohol, make food for our stoner friends in exchange for drugs, take shots in the walk-in fridge, roll on Molly while cooking, run out back to puke, and rally for the rest of our shift. After closing we'd meet up with other industry friends, usually at a bar where one of them was still working, close that place down, then pair off and hook up in questionable places.

I've had sex on restaurant rooftops and patios, in supply closets, behind the stacked pallets in dry storage, and in the manager's office. I witnessed others get it on in booths, on top of the video poker machines, and even on the bar itself. Thankfully never where food was prepared, but that was pretty much the only thing that was off limits, and only within my social circle. I can't speak about others.

I'm a boring elder millennial now, but every once in a while I reminisce about working in the service industry. I don't think I appreciated how much freedom I had, I was too busy worrying about money, school, and relationships. I definitely wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I got to sow my oats, or whatever.

Something I'd like to share:

I've been periodically checking reddit in my Browser to see what's going on. I commented last week about noticing a sharp decrease in posts on "my" front page. Since then I've observed a few more interesting things.

  1. Late last week, I noticed that multiple subreddits (BORU and PICS in particular) had like 2-4 posts when sorted by "top, 24 hours." It wasn't a case of having to click "next" (I really miss rifs endless scrolling feature...) to navigate to a second page of posts; there was no 2nd page. That was it.

  2. I also noticed that on the mobile website, ads are designed to look nearly identical to posts (imo it was more obvious that they were ads on rif), and most of the time the website would only have 1 or 2 posts before one of these fake ad posts, so your user experience is immediately impacted.

  3. The ads don't seem to be as targeted as they used to be. I used to get ads that seemed to be geared toward me, my searches, and interests. Creepy, but I found it way less annoying than the alternative. Which is apparently a lot of "He Gets Us" and ads for complicated electronics or unnecessary services. Like a mobile vet clinic that isn't even available in my area, lol.

  4. The bot posts are getting obvious and WEIRD. I took screenshots last weekend because just about every other post had a robotic, overly formal, and/or downright confusing title. Here are some examples:

56.3k, front page: "A brain tumour changed her life Her nerves are badly damaged! But today she opened a car door.....walked.....opened a gym door.....walked and sat down ..BY HERSELF what a lady"

[Quotation marks, format, and ellipses are original]

40.5k, front page: The trapped dog doesn't wait a bit to hug the rescuer after being freed..

Same weird ellipses, and the way it's phrased is like a "correct the mistakes" worksheet for 2nd graders.

I think Reddit is in the "find out" stage of their fucking around, even if it's a quiet or subtle change to the casual observer.

I also tried going to ModCoord [I'm not a mod it just felt like a good place to find updates] and, on my end, it looks like almost everything has been deleted. The same day I took screenshots, /r/PICS posted a public response to reddit's threats, which weren't even acknowledged on modcoord. The most recent post I could see was something from GallowBoob? It was really odd.

Is the website being glitchy? Probably. That is, after all, part of the root of this problem. But if anything, I'd say it's pretty clear that the content has decreased in both quality and depth in the last 10 days. Even if a lot of users are still signing in, I don't think they're posting, commenting, or voting as much as they used to. That may be a reflection of the quality of posts, or of users displeasure at the situation, but regardless of where it came from, at least it's something.

I logged in to reddit on my computer the day after rif went dark, and there were noticeably fewer posts on the front page. I think only 8 or so posts were above 10k upvotes. I wouldn't be surprised if advertisers are pulling their ads in response.

I don't know if I'd call it a mass exodus, and I don't know that it directly has anything to do with Lemmy, but there's been a noticeable dip in quality. Fewer posts across many of the front page subreddits, fewer votes, more bot posts, more low effort posts, less discussion in comment sections, lots of deleted comments and accounts... overall there just seems to be a dip in quality.

I was going to delete, but decided to stick around for a while first, to see how things pan out, and I've got to say the mobile site is even worse than expected. I get constant pop ups trying to direct me to download the app, then when I say no the website will auto reload, often sending me back to the top of the page. It's difficult to find and respond to anyone who replies to your comments, and sometimes if you sort by top: today it won't even show any posts. Just... blank. Clicking on a post opens it as a tab that is more like a popup, and closing it resets where you were on the page.

I could keep going but I think that pretty much summarizes what I've noticed. Don't know that it's directly related to a Lemmy "exodus," and I'm still finding my way around here so I can't really say, but reddit as we knew it seems pretty dead.

How do I contact my instance admin?

I went ahead and logged out and back in on my own, but I was not prompted to do so by Lemmy and I don't know enough about this stuff to say whether or not doing it on my own would've helped. I'm still pretty overwhelmed trying to figure this site out, so I apologize if this is a dumb question, just want to make sure I'm doing what I can to protect my own privacy.

I don't want to fall for the millennial version of a Nigerian prince scam, lol.

She alternated between giving them insulin, injecting air into their bloodstream, and overfeeding them. The babies that recovered most likely did so either because they weren't in bad shape to begin with, or because they coded while a competent doctor or nurse was on call and able to stabilize them, or because of luck. One of the babies she attempted to kill survived, but has severe cerebral palsy and requires a feeding tube. There's no definitive way to say that the nurse's attempts on her life caused her condition, as she was already a preemie and at risk for multiple complications, but I'd say the lack of durability definitely led to at least some lasting damage for some of the babies that recovered.

Honestly? As another user noted, it's just boring. Not nearly as much is getting posted, and the comments are reminiscent of the days when we'd scramble to write "FIRST" in the comment section. It doesn't feel conversational, if that makes sense. Like people are talking at each other, not with them. Also lots of "lol nothing changed, why was everyone making such a big deal?" But then the front page is mostly politics, shitposting, and recycled ask reddit questions. Not a monumental change, but definitely lower in quality, imo.

Try baking it like granola. Mix it with a little honey and maybe more dried fruit if you like that, spread a thin layer on an oiled baking sheet, and bake slow and low until it's crisp. Should improve the texture and make it a better contrast with the yogurt.

Elon Musk is just another gross white man who wants a manic pixie dream girl, minus the dreams. It's no surprise that he doesn't see a problem with this. He's a textbook predator, and the whole situation with Grimes made that abundantly clear.

I hope his next venture is selling guided tours in unregulated deep sea subs.

Yes, and apparently just bought a house right by the university and a major bike path, and has been seen out at bars in the area. What a fucking predator.

Well put! I'm still very confused about "instances," and the way people talk about them makes it seem like you need to sign up for each one? But that can't be right, that would be way too confusing! Right? Lol.

Lemmy.world also seems like the best place to ask questions. Everyone I've encountered has been very helpful, and I see a lot of people talking about how positive the community is. So I'm trying to just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Can I ask some possibly dumb questions?

  1. What is JWT?
  2. Was any private user data compromised, and if so will users be informed?
  3. Is there anything regular users can do to avoid their data being compromised? For example, not accessing lemmy on certain web browsers?

Thank you!

I live in the states and for a second it was like you were talking in code. Google to the rescue!

What do you mean?

I'm not a doctor so this is me just trying to piece together info from other sources, but it sounds like overfeeding can cause a lot of issues that premature babies aren't developed enough to deal with on their own, like severe gas and bloating. Depending on how delicate the baby is, this might lead to a cascade of problems that are difficult to diagnose, treat, and recover from. With babies that underdeveloped, even something as benign as eating too much can become deadly.

But again, not a doctor, and a quick Google search turned up a bunch of complicated articles that don't really clarify. I just know that it was one of her strategies for worsening the babies' condition.

Hey! My husband is thinking about doing something similar with his, can you share any resources you used? He's done programming before but never with a raspberry pi, and he's not sure where to start.

You have mouse shaped marshmallows?

Unfair.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Even if she's got a serious mental health condition, the odds of her not understanding that everyone in that car was likely to die are slim to none. Being unbalanced enough to be willing to end your own life, but not so unbalanced that you've already been committed or ostracized by your loved ones, is just so hard for me to comprehend.

I'm not worried about upvotes or downvotes being seen by anyone, but I am very worried about other personal info being seen by any admins. I have a very real, very scary stalker, and if all they had to do was create an instance to see my private information...

To be clear, I know that's not what's currently happening, but it feels like a bit of a slippery slope when pretty much anyone can become an admin and things aren't super secure yet.

I'm kind of regretting giving my email to sign up, now. I just don't know enough about this stuff to know whether or not that's a valid concern.

Wait, like, at the factory? Or are there Bob Evans restaurants? That's so sketchy!

I'd love to comment more but I'm still so confused. People keep talking about all these other apps and here I am just typing lemmy.world into my chrome browser on my phone. I've never felt more old. I've read every how-to I can find and I think I need to just come to terms with being old. 🥲

Why would I be? I get tested regularly (even now that I'm married, just in case), have the HPV vaccine, use protection, and have been on some sort of contraceptive for most of my adult life. I've never had an STD or an "oops" pregnancy, and know very few people who have.

Sex is fun, and pleasure is one of the best ways to deal with stress, imo. We shouldn't feel guilty pursuing what we want, as long as everyone is a consenting adult and being safe and responsible.

Oh yeah, I personally don't follow certain "best by" dates, I absolutely hate food waste. The sketchy part would be if it's happening in the factory itself. That's the one place where those kinds of rules and regulations matter most. If they're not throwing out the bad food at the source, that creates many more opportunities for spoilage and contamination before the food even reaches the consumer.

However, I know some restaurants also have frozen food brands, and vice versa (Like Marie Callenders, TGI Fridays, etc,) so if there's a Bob Evans restaurant doing this somewhere I'm oddly much less alarmed. I just have never heard of a Bob Evans restaurant before.

I email everything to myself like an old lady, and pay Google for extra storage. 🤫

Hey, me too!

I miss when things were either plug 'n play, or complicated enough that you needed like an IT spirit guide and lots of free time to get anything figured out.

Nobody wants to kiss that dude.

I didn't even know there WAS a new booster. God, will we ever escape this mess?

Thanks for the heads up! That's definitely something we hadn't considered. We'll start looking into it!

I'm on Lemmy.world and everything seems fine? I'm so confused.

Thank you so much for sharing! The only thing that still confuses me is upvoting. I thought Lemmy was still doing upvotes but I can't see where to do so on this interface.

If anyone else is confused, you just have to log in again using the interface. Figured I'd leave this up for others who might be confused 😂

There were T-shirts?

Very helpful! We are already looking into a VPN, just undecided which one to go with, so I'll send this comment to him. Thank you!

Thank you! I'm saving that list!

That's all so helpful, thank you so much!

Question from a noob: are you guys making new accounts for every instance? How do you keep track of that? Or are my login credentials supposed to work across instances as long as they're federated? I went to vlemmy.net and neither of the above is working. But also there's a button that says "support Lemmy" and Lemmy.world is where I made this account... so wouldn't I logically be able to use the same login credentials? I'm so lost!

Thanks so much! That's reassuring. I am still a little confused about all the apps and widgets that are being discussed and/or recommended, but everyone has been so helpful, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually.

That's so true! I guess I've kinda forgotten the days when I used reddit on my desktop browser. I used rif and other apps for so long, being back in my browser feels foreign again.

I already am.
