As a former teacher, advisor to a state attorney general, and now an executive at Meta — I’ve dedicated my career to protecting children online.

That’s an awfully strange pathway to executive at Meta.

The voice actor for Leela (Katey Sagal) played Peggy Bundy in the tv show Married… with children, which was hugely popular in the 90s. The above picture was a very common scene from the tv show. Peggy with huge hair, sitting on the couch with her husband watching tv and eating junk food. So, it’s a fun reference to her previous work.

Congrats and well done! Take some time to celebrate! (And then max out your 401k if you’re in the US and you haven’t already)

For anyone confused about the Netflix bit. If you’re subscribed to Netflix, they offer a bunch of free mobile games that you can download and play. This works pretty similar to Apple Arcade. If you log into Netflix on your phone you should see a row of games that you can play.

If you read this article, start from the halfway point. The first half is absolute fluff.

Arguments against:

  • The executed needs to breathe. Author believes this will cause stress as they may attempt to hold their breath.
  • An ill fitted mask for nitrogen delivery may be a safety concern for occupants in the same room. Article did not have details on how much nitrogen is delivered or how much would be need to impact a small room.
  • if an execution fails, first responders may have difficulty treating the patient due to the prevalence of nitrogen gas.
  • When terminated by nitrogen, a study found mice elicit a fear response indicating that more research is needed before using this as an ethical means of terminating mice… or people.

Author also argues that since other states don’t use this method, it shouldn’t be used… which feels more like a chicken and egg problem.

I don’t see a problem with it but there’s definitely a stigma associated with it. (At least in the US) I think folks who pay are seen as not being able to find it elsewhere which may make them appear as not desirable to other people which then may make your partner question if they’re making a bad choice. Unless you happen to be in an area that has well regulated sex workers, I imagine people might think that you’ve been exposed to STDs which may give you a perception of being “unclean”.

I don’t think you should have to lie when finding a partner… but I do think telling them this (at the beginning) may be problematic for you for a lot of people.

I’d love to see sex work well regulated, protected, and normalized in the US but I don’t think we’re there.

No worries! I always thought of a “joke” as something that was intended to make me laugh. When I first saw this, I laughed as I didn’t expect a reference to her old show. So I personally consider it reasonable to call it a joke. Either way, this all has made me want to go back and watch an episode or two of Married with children. Cheers!

I always thought being able to recognize voices is a common skill? Is it not?

Since everyone’s mentioned the standards.

I’ve really enjoyed playing Tails of Iron (metroidvania with a focus on learning bosses attacks) lately. For programming games, I really liked Shenzhen IO (You create hardware with something resembling an Assembly language and a printable manual) and Human Resources Machine (drag and drop assembly programming)

I also have a soft spot for anything from Ska Studios (I maed a game with zombies in it, salt and sanctuary, salt and sacrifice, dishwasher, Charlie murder, and a bunch of older games that are probably not playable anymore)

Also looks like everyone else forgot to mention the great game that is Undertale as well.

I hate watching videos! So I asked some AI to provide a summary.

In this YouTube video titled "The Arcade Game that Crashes Itself for Anti-Piracy Reasons," the speaker discusses the anti-piracy measures implemented in the arcade game Tempest. These measures include checksums used to verify the integrity of the code and copyright strings, as well as checks for genuine hardware. The speaker explains the checksum calculation process, provides examples of the code used, and discusses how the game detects genuine hardware by auditing random number generation in the POKEY chips. The purpose of these measures is to deter piracy and make it more challenging for hackers to modify the game. However, it is now easier to disable or delete these anti-piracy measures, although finding unmodified versions of the Tempest arcade cabinet remains challenging.”

Pretty interesting that they leveraged how the random number generation happened to determine if the hardware was authentic or not.

I’m really interested to see how they’re going to region lock this. Will it be where the device was sold? Does that comply with EU regulations? Will it be geographical location? If I move to the US, will it lock the side loaded apps? If I grab a VPN can I side load things?

Hey… I don’t have any actual advice for you. Sorry you’re going through a rough time. This too shall pass.

Maybe give FFXIV a try! There’s a pretty expanded free portion that lets you play through a large portion of the game. I enjoyed the gameplay and there’s something resembling a story.

I just recently started playing OW2 again after several years. I was able to unlock all of the heroes just by playing. I didn’t pay anything. My kids also have unlocked the vast majority without paying anything.

Is the only difference here that you won’t have to get to level 30 or whatever on the free tier battle pass?

What’s the story with the paid FMLA? I ended up taking FMLA for my sons birth, only for my employer to decide that I could only use 2 weeks of my 6 weeks PTO saved. Apparently, theres no guarantee of pay during FMLA or even that you should be allowed to use your accrued leave during that time… They sprung this on me the day my kid was born, after several months of planning and getting okays from HR.

There’s a happy ending though. I threatened to sue them (I’m not sure I would have had a case but I had documentation of them approving the PTO usage). So, they stopped responding to me and paid me for all of my PTO. I put in my notice the day I returned. My immediate manager even approved a week of PTO for my two week notice because of how much he hated the situation. The new job paid more with less stress… wins all around.

So far I’m enjoying it! It has a soft progression limiter where you get cursed in such a way that monsters get increasingly more damaging every encounter… this goes away after you run into this person a few times.

My only concern is that I’ll feel the need to replay it once all of the content is there… which I guess isn’t too bad!

Haven’t played that particular Shantae game, but I found the series off putting to play in front of my kids due to the high amount of fan service. Seems like not what op might not be going for here.

This article is entirely bullshit speculation.

Ah yeah I could see that. My family got into it for a few months and was a lot of fun. I did have pretty good experiences with randos though.

Just a heads up that CS2 isn’t super enjoyable to play on the steam deck. Unless you’re really good with the gyro aiming, you’re going to get wrecked. I also had some frame drops when playing csgo. It’s possible that that’s gotten better with CS2 though.

I’d stick with the old mouse and keyboard for those games unless you’re somehow playing with folks who also have steam decks.

Left the house for a walk in the rain with the wife. Lots of mountain bikers were out!

Apparently it’s called AI Shark now! Because it uses AI to cheat!

I don’t know enough about the finer details of this topic to say what is right or wrong, but I was hoping to be educated by the article… which felt like it was just thrown together without proper due diligence… or editing.

Awesome! I just discovered retroachievements for my newly created counter top arcade machine!

CounterStrike 2 came out last Wednesday. Basically the same game as CSGO but with some quality of life and graphical updates. Might be worth taking a shot at getting back into it.

There’s some platforming but Hollow Knight is an excellent game if you enjoy metroidvania types.

If you have someone to play with you may want to give local couch games a try. I’m ignoring a few of your thematic dislikes because they aren’t really a critical part of most of these games.

Games like:

Lovers in a dangerous space time

Boomerangfu

It takes two

Untitled goose game (single player is also fun if you enjoy harassing people as a goose)

Unravel

Duck game

Portal 2 (single player is great)

Cup head (single player is also great)

Gotcha! Thanks for the clarification!

If your addiction is libido based rather than boredom based, you might want to consider trying Ashwagandha. I’m not usually one to tout supplements, but this has helped me manage my overactive libido.

I had no idea this was a thing! Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like your job was a complete disaster! Glad you managed to get out of there and good job getting the extra insurance!

Hope you’re doing alright and none of your bone marrow has turned into tumors.

I agree! I’ve never been able to play the newer patch because I have the switch but I’ve spent many hours playing this game with the family!

I love it.

I can’t get enough of the, often shoddy, short form horror.

Interesting thought! This wouldn’t work for iPads and iPhones with no sim (but use WiFi) though

I might be messing something up here… but TJ is in Fairfax County isn’t it? Fairfax county is definitely “communist Northern Virginia”

I haven’t extensively tested it but I have been able to get it to work with both. I was also able to use a usb hub with a Logitech dongle for a mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard. On my flights, I’ll normally pair my Sony Bluetooth headphones.

All of it has worked seamlessly for me.

The following context is at least a year or two old, so I’m betting things have gotten a lot better since: I had issues when pairing multiple Nintendo pro controllers to the steamdeck. It would work and then suddenly drop one or both of the controllers. When using a mouse and keyboard with the deck, I’ve had issues when using game mode (as opposed to desktop mode). Frequently this resulted in my character looking straight at the ground no matter what I did. When in desktop mode, performance takes a hit and my games would drop frames occasionally. I originally hoped I could seamlessly dock this and play couch coop games. At the time this functionality felt mostly broken, but I’ve been told it’s gotten a lot better in later patches.

I have the older steam deck, but I still love it. I’ve used it for rocket league, a whole suite of indie games, Sifu, Like A Dragon, and a semi tolerable bg3 experience. Emulation is also pretty fantastic.

Submit the PR to fix it! The link to the GitHub is right there

I had a lot of fun playing ZeeMud back in the day. Apparently it’s still running, but the last time I checked it was mostly a graveyard. I tried to get back on and play a bit… but it feels depressing… like going back to your old home that’s now abandoned…

Nice! Glad to hear it’s gotten better! I haven’t tried in a long awhile so I’m not surprised it’s fixed

Thanks for the info! I had no idea this existed!

I’m old and haven’t grown out of video games and now enjoy playing them with my kids! Video games rule for all ages!
