Older but not necessarily wiser. Been online since 1970s BBS

I popped over to Reddit for the first time since third party apps were cruelly shut down. It’s clear that Reddit has sunk to new lows. Obviously trolling and a marked decrease in the quality of content

It’s because the im isn’t a prefix but part of the word. (It was originally spelt empeche)

Every single person who I’ve known or seen with a foldable Samsung has a prominent fold (enough to lift the top layer of the screen) or crack.

The tech just isn’t there yet.

I don’t know why you are being downvoted. I was talking about this with another dog owner.

People haven’t trained their dogs to walk at heel.

You often see owners being almost dragged along pavements with the dogs on the road side.

Dogs on a long leash while near a road or people.

Etc etc

It is, check the OED.

I’m much older than you and quite like the word which is why I used it.

I also think that sort of gatekeeping of words is another sign of the decay of society. People used to enjoy new words being coming into use but now they are ‘dumb’

It’s not cromulent and doesn’t embiggen the soul.

We have a friend who does this. To the point of bleeding. It is a recognised medical compulsive disorder condition (a desire for perfect skin so you want to remove the imperfections which makes it worse and so on)

Please do see a doctor. They won’t think badly of you and can help.

I didn’t enjoy firefish, it was buggy and seemed to have a lot of gatekeeping.

Also, an old person. I think the difference this time is twofold.

The people in charge are clearly crazy and in some cases unwell. The general enshitification of life. Ordinary every day things are much worse but more expensive.

I agree it won’t end but society as we knew it ten years ago (a hope that the future would be better, the big problems could be tackled) is finished.

Surely that depends whether you’re in the vehicle (and can see the lights) or an observer outside of the vehicle

Basis becomes Bases Crisis becomes Crises Oasis Oases Echolalia Echolalies Etc Generally the vowel becomes an e

Illinois Illinoes

I think it depends on several factors:

In most jurisdictions time has to be allowed for the lawyers to examine the judge’s decision (if a judge has made the determination m) in order to decide if they want to appeal. Remember in some places the prosecution can appeal if the defendant was find guilty but not in all counts.

If a jury made the decision then the judge also has to consider sentencing guidelines and weigh the evidence to determine the sentence. This might involve medical reports etc

In some jurisdictions both parties need to make a case for a particular sentence.

So in many cases it’s not as if nothing is happening.

  1. Some people prefer pages to scrolling (it’s amazing the strength of opinion about this for either point of view)
  2. Advertisements are charged per impression. So each page counts as a new impression
  3. Be grateful websites no longer auto scroll web pages
  4. Some things lend themselves to page by page. For example very long articles (this is why books replaced scrolls)
  5. Be grateful that websites stopped animating page turns etc
  6. Sometimes web developers don’t care and just use a bought in package

Samsung advise not to remove the screen protector, ironically because doing so can damage the screen.

Disagree, work gave me an A21s. At least once a day I’ll be staring at a blank screen for 30 seconds before it shows me the buttons to answer a call but by then the caller has hung up. Also randomly it will turn the screen brightness down so low that you can’t see to turn it up.

Heaven knows how awful the A0 and A1 series are!

Putting aside that this use case doesn’t meet the five requisites for block chain use, the fediverse in general and Lemmy is already struggling with too much data being stored and moved.

It was actually much easier than I expected. I used to smoke 40 a day about 30 years ago . One day I just decided to give up. The first few days aren’t that bad, you will get cravings but I found the best thing to do was distract yourself. Giving up while I was busy at work was a good way to distract my brain. After a few days the cravings get less and less.

What is harder is months down the line when you accidentally catch secondhand smoke. I couldn’t help but think “I’ve given up for so long, just one wouldn’t hurt”

It must be easier nowadays because fewer people smoke (in most countries) but back then it was common to see people light up when they left buildings.

The answer is: do a job you like and do the things you like. I’m due to retire in ten years and won’t be doing so. I won’t work as much but I will work

It’s easier in some countries than others. But the key is not wasting time on things that you feel pressured to do because of societal norms or because you’re too lazy to do anything different.

Look up Egg Theory. It will blow your mind.

Basically they are rewriting it as they say they didn’t really know how to use the tools when they did v1. Which is why it’s an acquired taste.

The UK, you can easily get unlimited calls, SMS and data for £20 and even lower if there’s a promotion on. eg six months half price. I get it for £18 a month.

Hi,

What sort of thing do you like?

There’s a good Star Trek community and a Lemmy.World general chat community.

The thing is, as humans we can learn how to care for animals before we take them on.

Exactly, this whole conversation is about people who don’t train their dogs. Most of them because they can’t be bothered to learn how to.

Yesterday I saw a man with three large husky type dogs. He had them on the traffic side of the pavement and they were pulling him in both directions. At least he had them on a stout lead and not one of those retractable things.

He seems like a lovely man and is generally interesting. But he has an opinion on everything even when he doesn’t have any knowledge of the subject. So can be a difficult follow on occasion. If that happens, don’t unfollow but put him on mute for a few days.

Probably about an hour.

It depends also on what type of business. For example in Finance a consumer is a real person who buys/borrows uses something but a customer is a general term for a person, business, organisation or partnership that buys goods or services.

For example, I might have an account at XYZ Bank and so might a company. We are both customers of XYZ Bank but I am a consumer and the company isn’t.

[to complicate things small businesses might class as consumers in some jurisdictions]

I am also in the same position. It seems to have disappeared. Edit: it looks like the admin enabled Cloudflare which reports that the host server is not replying.

That means it’s either down or not configured properly.

There we go, a strong opinion.

You might have something there. I know it works the other way. I was going to post that most of the people I know just come out and say when they know they’ve been wrong. It stops it being a big thing. Admitting you’re wrong or you made a mistake takes all the embarrassment out of it because you now own the situation.

It looks like Cloudflare can contact the server but the request doesn’t complete.

This might mean it’s still there but misconfigured.

In non technical terms, some operating systems (eg iOS) will vouch that you are human. Which bypasses the need to click on things.

See https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iph4f43a30c9/ios for details of how to turn it off
