Retired IT guy, all-around nuisance

I think it's about time to finally leave Reddit. I've been there for almost 15 years and I just got my first permanent ban from a legal advice sub for one single comment. I'm not sure what I said wrong because I never use inflammatory language. Oh well, I already left Twitter, time to bail on Reddit too.

I only say something if I have something to say. And the larger platform gets, the harder it gets to be heard.

I'm 65 now. When I was a kid, I was relatively patriotic. Civil rights, moon landing, all that stuff. Now? Not so much. The US is still much better than many other countries but it's not the world leader that used to be.

Have to make sure you let people know that liberals are all socialists and hate capitalism

I stopped watching network television because of ads, then I stopped watching free streaming because of too many ads (Pluto TV, Crackle), I get a basic subscription to Paramount through Walmart and I stopped watching that because of the ads. I have an Amazon prime subscription because I get it for one half off but I rarely use prime video an if they start showing ads, I won't use it at all.

I sort of understand that they are a necessary evil but I really get tired of seeing stuff like this

So long and thanks for all the fish!

I am not going to click on this headli....fuck

No Empire lasts forever.

They put Bluetooth in our apartment complex laundromat and if you don't have a smart phone or Internet service on your phone, you don't do laundry.

There was no catalyst specifically but I deleted my shortcuts and uninstalled the app a couple of weeks ago because there just isn't anything for me on Twitter, X or whatever. Have not gone back since.

Plex and Calibre

Poe's Law does run a bit rampant on Reddit

The cordiality of a mob is inversely proportional to its size.

I thought that was an exchange between Nietzsche and God, or it used to be. Anyway, I was unaware that the double low-9 quotation mark was even a thing so thanks for that.

Every time I did that I got downvoted to oblivion

I saved up 14 years worth of karma on Reddit and traded it in for…nothing, because that's what it's worth in the real world.

Grocery prices can vary widely depending on location. The absolute cheapest Walmart ground beef I can get is $4.50 per pound and milk is $3.62 a gallon. Pasta is a $1 pound and eggs are relatively cheap here. Produce has gone through the roof.

I've been on Reddit going on 15 years now and it's absolutely nothing like what was a decade ago. This is what happens when millions of people invade a site, mods become control freaks and the executives don't care about anything other than dollar signs.

You will never find more wretched hives of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

How do you know if somebody has Linux on their desktop?… They'll tell you. I'm currently on Windows 10 Pro but have used a number of different Linux distros since the mid-90s. I also had to have Windows because of work requirements but now that I'm retired, I may go back to Debian or Kali.

I can just hear some people going, "WHAT? Are you crazy?". I was a little tike in the early 60s and the only monitor my mom had was me screaming or the "THUNK" of me falling and hitting the floor.

Whether you think this has a political bias or not, no matter what whose list you look up, they all basically say the same thing.

Considering I got 3 years worth at about $1.50 a month, I get more than enough content every month to make the cost worthwhile. I don't use it much for privacy but I use it a lot to access movies and such.

The original post there was about somebody who had to pay back $6000 to the food stamp office because there was a year's worth of overpayments. I said that even though the error was no fault of his own, he still had to pay it back. That is in fact true and I found myself permanently banned 30 minutes later.

I just find it strange that you can get banned for life just because you made one comment that the mods did not like. It's not like I called the guy a scumbag or loser and that he should go to jail or something equally vindictive.

I'm pretty far left politically and I can't stand Spez. The guy is the definitive self absorbed capitalist... seems pretty Republican to me.

Or a successful politician

I'm sure it's different for everyone but I was beginning to get burned out on social media and would have spent less time on it regardless.

15 years in September. I haven't bailed completely but almost.

The only reason I remember that I'm 64 is that I will be 65 on my next birthday. That's kind of a milestone for a number of reasons and it's easy to remember. The same was true when I was about to turn 50. Other than that, anything after 30 is kind of blurry

People in the US scream about inflation but many of them have no idea how bad it is in other countries. Places where food products are sparse or imported are extremely expensive. There's not that much stuff we don't produce or grow in the US.

I'm pretty far left politically and I can think of a number of similarities between the two parties. The dynamics are very much the same in certain cases but the ideology driving it is different.

I don't think it would serve any purpose

Too much bash and not enough books

At first, the bots were kind of cute but then they began overrunning the whole site.

The last time I saw a Wizard of id comic strip was in the early 70s.

I've only used mobile versions of Reddit a few times and try to use a browser for the ad blocking. Reddit actually started going down the tubes once it was taken over by the corporation that owns Condé Nast and a few other publishers. Corporate interests, whether it's Disney or Reddit, rarely align with those of the fan base that made them popular in the first place.

I always knew Arthur C Clarke was an agent of Satan, especially after the disappointment that was 3001: The Final Odyssey.

Because of the electoral college, my vote doesn't mean much of anything in a presidential election because I live in a very blue state, not a swing state. I still vote, though.

I don't DL that much and it's usually just books so I still use torrents and a VPN.
