Never owned a bird account. Spent 17 years at Reddit.
Be excellent to each other. She/Her. GenX.

Exactly. My sympathies are with those creators & moderators who have received awful comments from reddit users that are too naive and impatient to understand the protest actions.

There was like 12 packet pastas @ 85 grams each, 12 cans of spaghetti and baked beans. A couple of other odds and ends. All piled on my front porch when I arrived home from work today. The postman must've been livid.

“That is what everybody on Earth will know,” he said. “We’ll be gone, and it’ll be gone because of an advertiser boycott.”

Oh no, not at all, dear ... everybody on Earth is perfectly aware that it is YOU who is killing the company. Twisting the narrative to feel better within yourself ain't gonna change the fact. Why would any advertiser worth a damn, want to be associated with Stormfront 2.0?

They say they are expected to accept contracts that were designed for the old business model while the industry structure and technologies have changed. Here's some video of the speeches & demonstrations.

Netflix wanting to get paid for their service and content is reasonable.

Sure, it's reasonable, and why I started subscribing in the first place. But if I pay for four screens, I expect to be able to use all of those four screens, no matter what address they are being viewed from.

It took me hours of trying to read through not-my-kind-of-jargon to understand

I started off going down that road of trying to understand it, but my laziness and impatience got in the way and said "just start using it and you'll work it out." And that's exactly what happened for me. In a way, the explanations made it all sound much more confusing than it really is. Sometimes you just gotta take a deep breath and dive in.

Who wants a generic old waterfall photo that you can find hundreds of pictures of on the web, when you can have a waterfall and Borker photo that's completely unique?

I think a time will come in our dystopian future where it will be trendy to have a performance by a real actor or a traditional painting created by a real artist ... that will be the gimmick, so to say.

Exactly. I think the bigger question here is whether hand-soap is sufficient to use as body wash? 🤔

I used to watch a lot of controversial/conspiracy/right-wing stuff because I wanted to keep tabs on their crazy. Eventually it all became way too toxic and bad for my mental health but I needed to fix my Youtube feed. There was lots of unsubscribing and channel blocking, but mostly watching of lots of trivial videos was what helped to clean it up.

I don't think downvoting helps, but upvoting does. The algorithm knows people will engage more with content that makes them angry/afraid ... don't let it know when you feel that way.

Maybe scroll through a lot of shorts and then like and subscribe to videos & channels that are less innocuous, or completely trivial (like cooking tips, makeup & fashion for older women, celebrity gossip entertainment, comedy, feel good compilations etc). If you haven't already, definitely subscribe to Daily Dose of Internet. Youtube also seems to like pushing Lo-fi, meditation, and binaural beats (especially at night) ... sub a few of those.

Block those channels who have Rogan or Tate or similar in their video titles. Unsub from the likes of Dr John Campbell & Russell Brand. If she likes news and current affairs, try to find world news channels that are more highly regarded but less likely to be "ultra left" channels that she would recognise from her anti-browsing. Channels like Reuters, AFP, or maybe news stations from other countries (like ABC news in Australia, or CBC and Global News in Canada). Block "Rebel News" and unsub from "News Nation", or anyone else that pushes clickbait headlines. Swap her subscription from "Sky News Australia" (block) to simply "Sky News" - The Australian one is made by NewsCorp (Murdoch) and targets the American right-wing audience, while the other is a legitimate UK news channel which is not owned by Murdoch - she wont notice the subtle difference in the logos, but the content will be dramatically different.

Also, I would recommend a channel called The Why Files ... he does videos on conspiracies, lays out all the conspiracy evidence, and then also lays out any debunking facts. He treats the subjects seriously, so watchers don't feel stupid for believing something, but then does a great job of presenting the debunking facts as well, so viewers get a really balanced presentation about controversial topics.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

P.S. If you haven't done so yet, I would recommend watching a documentary called "The Social Dilemma" if you are able to find a copy (it's on Netflix).

Oh no! I don't drive, so heavy and bulky is why I need most things delivered. 😅

The success of reddit is balancing on whether you open up that incredibly defiant group of nail artists! 🙃

Well, I'm glad you've found your way here. There are a couple of groups that might be of interest to you ...

Epic lost their case with Apple regarding Fortnite, yet now Epic are looking to make Fortnite available on iOS in EU. But from the article it seems an alternate "app marketplace" would still need Apple approval anyway. It will be interesting to see how all this is going to work.

I put the packages in this box to bring them in, so I can imagine it would've been pretty frustrating going back and forth to the truck with handfuls of packages. I sure hope he forgives me. lol.
But anyway, why cat litter? Because it's heavy, or spills? I'm in Australia so online cat litter offerings are not a cost effective option, but I'll keep your protest in mind for the future.

Finally. It would have been nice to see these tactics denounced a decade or two ago, but better late than never, I guess. I'm glad to see it.

Just visited a moment ago to check if I received my Place awards for placing FUCK SPEZ pixels. Couldn't access my profile page without turning off adblock. They just keep giving me more and more reasons not to return.

Apologies. It was the first source that appeared in my feed.

Edit: oh and this is British Sky News, just in case you hadn't realised it's not Sky News Australia ... a completely different beast.

It's currently 2.9 stars on my Playstore. I've given it one star and a scathing review. Thanks for the heads-up. I hadn't thought about changing my review when I uninstalled it a couple of weeks ago.

Give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile.

I've been watching the North too so I've been slowly buying up some bottled water supplies in case the water reservoir is affected by algal bloom or gets tainted by fires again. 🔥

Summer is coming. 😅

Yeh I don't understand it either. I'm from Australia. Driving into a desert sounds like a pretty dangerous thing to do, no matter what the weather forecast is.

Played Fortnite Festival and discovered "The Search" by NF. What a banger!

get my head around the fact that I had to also join any instance I wanted to respond to

Wait. What? Why are you doing that?

I think what you are looking for is kinda related to street epistemology.

I thought the algorithm responds to downvotes with more of the same content because negativity drives engagement. I very rarely downvote because I don't want YT to know what I don't like. I do however tell it to completely block rage-bait channels. This works for my home feed but not in trending.

I mean, sure, but I feel it probably wasn't the greatest unmasking. Some of the stuff was just plain ignorant and embarrassing ... for the lawmakers. Like this exchange with the Tik Tok CEO. I feel like they probably don't really understand what they are up-in-arms about. 🤷‍♀️

"Weathered steel" was all the rage on brand new buildings a few years ago, why not on a "truck"? 😏

the value seems to be entirely in the packaging.

How true and how ridiculous is that?! At least my Pop Vinyls & Star Trek Hot-wheels collectibles are still functional toys if they are ever removed from their packaging.

I mean, if it were 20 different items I could probably put it down to that but there were six packets of each of the flavours and types. You'd think all the Alfredo's could go in one package, for example, not each in their own padded envelope. Does pasta even need padding? It was just ridiculous, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a disgruntled worker engaged in a bit of malicious compliance!

😮I looked this up! It was Fifth ave, but your point still stands. That's so overt!
But I believe his cultists think they are the seven Trumpets in Revelation.

Nice.

Unravel (So touching, made me cry)
Project Zomboid (One of my fav games. I've played this split screen with my son. He kills the zombies, I organise the base)
A Way Out (Prison escape story)
Pinball FX3 (A classic two player experience)
Stardew Valley (Crafting/farming)
Beyond Two Souls (Story)
Skullgirls (2D Anime platform fighter)

I'm also noticing a satisfying lack of the /s tag.

This is true for me as well. I became very considered with all my posts, and scared to post a quick off-hand remark on reddit. Often I would get half-way through a comment, and just delete it because I had become paranoid about how it would be received - even the most mundane thoughts and opinions. It was just too mentally exhausting to deal with. And also, I 'd just like to say: the "fancy pants" editor is shit.

If the owners of your instance (you're on Lemmy.world) blocks another instance, then you would have to go to the other "instance" (effectively, their actual website) to view the content. You would have to make an account at their instance to interact with the content on their site.

Alternatively, you could also make an account with a different lemmy instance (or kbin/etc.) that federates with them (but I didn't wanna complicate the above explanation too much.)

The movie, "Big Miracle", seems to have been based on a real event known as "Operation Breakthrough". There was a time where something like this would have the entire world holding it's collective breath and doing all it can to save the animals. Today, hardly anyone knows it's happening. 😢

I think a great many users came to the Fediverse because they were not happy with their experience on FB, Reddit et al and were looking for something that is not that. Why should those users then be expected to recreate that model, or allow that content into this community? People here have already left those massive communities, and connections, and you speak like they lament that choice.

I sent my kids nuts playing that soundtrack on rotation. lol.
