Someone making money off this is MAYBE fourth or fifth down the line of issues with the entire situation. It's a slap in the face for humanity that our focus is more about the people filming and hosting it. What a world.

Plenty to dislike about Biden but this one existed LONG before him and is a lot more complex than "current admin bad".

Even this person leaving their position admits it's been this way for decades and is wholly unsurprising, albeit incredibly disappointing.

Whichever way instances decide to go there's a few things people should remember:

  • We're lucky to have this option even if it's divisive at times.

  • It's not always about what we know will happen, sometimes it's concern over possibilities we couldn't even imagine at the time.

  • Growth is great but there's infrastructure, moderators and policies that can be overwhelmed.

  • Defederation can be reversed at any time if things change.

Easy there, Satan...

Let's put this another way.

That ~25 billion, heavily absorbed by foreign investors, has bought influence on worldwide events/elections and allowed those that previously hated the platform to sabotage it internally, likely to a post-election failure.

Makes you wonder to what degree we have a "useful idiot billionaire" situation, with other interests (countries?) steering the out of control train to their benefit.

To be fair, the guy did actually self checkin to a mental facility this summer for two weeks and was released. Additionally, Maine is a yellow flag state where firearms can be taken away via a mental health review. (To be clear, this is NOT enough in my opinion).

Today on Lemmy, which is dumber?

-Distilling an entire presidency to what happens in proxy wars (the RU one admittedly being an amazing deal for the US against a long term adversary).

-Voting third party in '20/'24

Yet, annoyingly, much of the press still uses it to disseminate news.

I understand journalism is in a rough spot these days and many are there against their will but something needs to change abruptly. This slow exodus is too slow for democracy to survive '24.

A firehose spewing ignorance has no time for facts or reading comprehension. That person has 800 posts and over 1,000 downvotes in just 40 days.

While odd looking to some of us, they were actually right. That's 56,000 "millions" or 56,000 x 1,000,000 = 56 billion. A mind blowing amount of cash.

It's still there, it's just off by default since people rarely use it these days.

Go to Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars. Pick the Home button or whatever else you want on the toolbar, and just drag it up there. Some items might be in the overflow menu on the right.

It was specifically in a police TV show, spare us the tried joke.

As does decades of systematically defunding education. The decades of leaded gas/paint by prior generations probably weren't helping...

None of us like it but most of us, eventually, learn what a trap third party voting is the way the system is set up. When you're young, naive and a bit idyllic it seems like an easy choice. "I'm standing up for change!" you think to yourself. Or perhaps the old "We gotta start somewhere, let's get that 5%!" nugget.

Then you get older and the shit you used watch from the sidelines on TV actually starts to affect your lives. Health care, education, retirement and other life issues show up and that naivety falls away rapidly as you learn that A) it'll take a revolution of sorts for any meaningful change and B) our lives are too short to hope for said revolution. Do we still want that change, absolutely. However, sometimes in life, you really do need to choose between the douche and the turd sandwich.

Ask 100 random people on the street what regulatory capture is and you're not going to come close to half that do. Instead of "don't be surprised" how about we educate people or are least try to add to the discussion.

Thank you, someone finally looking big picture. I see a lot of folks talking about things like "it won't harm Threads" or "the federation is all about inclusiveness and joining together" and those people, while correct on paper, are missing the point.

Put simply, many instances would prefer not to deal with that unnatural influx, and that is their choice. In fact, the best part of the fediverse is not only that they CAN make that choice it's that they can UNDO it later if need be. I can't fault some of these smaller instances for being proactive in protecting themselves when few here really know what goes into running and moderating.

Even if that were true, they should STILL try it. You do it to put the pressure on, to slowly move forward, put the idea in the news, on people's minds, etc. It may seem futile but we have to start somewhere.

I used to use the narrator's voice from old "How It's Made" episodes to put me to sleep at night.

You do it for the out of touch, under-informed moderates... not those who vote R down the line.

Mr. Delusional Downplay Puppet of the Year awards goes to this guy.

Harder to do if you use Prime for other things. I've never watched a single Amazon video but I'm trying to source other purchase options locally so I can finally cancel the Prime shipping, which was saving our household money over the years. That said, if we can avoid it in the future we'll stay off Amazon.

The problem is where you said "as long as" because we already know companies AND the AI itself can't be trusted to not expose sensitive info inadvertently. At absolute best, it's another vector to be breached.

Exactly. This case likely will never make it past discovery given how much there is to lose.

He's been saying it for decades (literally), it's only now that it garners so much attention. Look, I can find 100 reasons to dislike the guy but being consistent isn't one of them.

You're naive to think it's just starting now.

If it takes three paragraphs and your specific voting location to explain why your vote "technically" won't go to 45, maybe those people are right. The problem is that there are a LOT of people that don't understand the nuance and we have to plan for the lowest common denominator, otherwise people in actual swing states will see posts like your first one (lacking any explanation) and run with it. For them, a third party vote actually is helping 45.

Additionally, there's a decent argument to be made about total votes even though they don't "technically" decide the president. That number still matters and a lot of weight is thrown around with it. For all we know, this whole thing could hit the courts and having every advantage may be necessary to save our future.

I love kbin but being a one man show and lacking API it was never really going to be the replacement. I am, however, glad to have it as one of a handful of smaller alternatives and a sort of cousin to Lemmy.

Some day you'll realize the world isn't so black and white and you don't always know what people have or haven't been through. You sound like the type that tells depressed people to just ""get therapy" or worse yet "just think happier", not realizing the hurdles both can have. With any luck, when you grow up you'll look back and realize what a heartless ass you were.

They screwed with the algorithm years ago. It took about 4 hours for it to show up on /r/all via /r/Maine.

Put simply, shenanigans.

For better or worse, his (possible) reelection is too important to several foreign nations and billionaires across the world. That's all you need to know.

You're seeing that in-between moment when a wildly ignorant comment is upvoted to the top quickly but comes down slowly. It's still hot, but the OP has been downvotes far below most corrective comments.
