Looks like they put the oversized load on a boat for as long as they could, but have to do the last leg by road.

From your other responses, this is a system issue not a problem with the website.

Lemmy.world's code has this font list for sans-serif: system-ui,-apple-system,"Segoe UI",Roboto,"Helvetica Neue","Noto Sans","Liberation Sans",Arial,sans-serif,"Apple Color Emoji","Segoe UI Emoji","Segoe UI Symbol","Noto Color Emoji"

I'd use the dev tools to check which font is being rendered. I'm on Windows so I get Segoe UI, which I find entirely acceptable.

The three tax prep firms named are H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer.

Nothing else reaches the same quality as Chrono Trigger in the same way. You have to settle for lower quality with similar pacing, or try to reach the same level of quality in a different way.

Similar pacing, lower quality: Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy IV
Comparable quality, different style: Earthbound, Final Fantasy VII (FF6 is the real answer, but FF7 is the most similar game to FF6)
Similar aspects, lower quality: Dragon Quest IV, Radical Dreamers & Chrono Cross, possibly Radiant Historia

Chiptune formats for retro videogame music can be very efficient. Just picking two with particularly good music, I have a 21 KB (0.02 MB) file storing 28:30 of music and 4.72 MB of files storing 1:54:48 of music, both at source quality.

The catch is that they are designed exclusively to rip chiptunes from retro videogames as close as the format designers and player coders could manage to the original. So even the oversized ones like the 4.72 MB of files extracted from a 3 MB game are going to be far smaller than a general use format like opus. But you can't encode your own music in the format without going to massive effort to code it like you would an authentic chiptune, and you're unlikely to like the results.

I've never seen the word before, but calling Ukraine's president -- who is Jewish -- a "nazi" was a staple of Putin's propaganda to support his war of imperial re-conquest.

Tumblr is still popular with the 2000s LiveJournal crowd, i.e. people who need 500 words not 500 characters or 500x500 pixels.

Gentoo seems great if you want to experiment with patches to major programs or system libraries. That's what I used it for.

Cash bail is giving the court a lot of money as a pledge that you will show up for your trial. If you show up, you get the money back. The point is that it's a life-changing amount of money and losing it would be worse than the consequences of being convicted.

Non-cash bail is mostly promising to show up for your court date and not commit any more crimes in the meantime, but there can be restrictions like wearing an ankle monitor and not leaving the state.

It means that the police believe that the family was targeted because of some relationship, instead of a serial killer or armed robbers looking for whoever left the door open or doesn't keep large dogs. So the police don't expect the killer(s) to massacre another family in the neighborhood.

Everything filed under "Chiptune", excluding the AT3 and MAB files which are effectively general purpose music formats, comes to 1.14 GB for 4211 items totaling 158:50:29. There are a lot of duplicates in there, because for a lot of these items it's more trouble to hunt down a replacement copy than it is to store a backup.

The catch, of course, is that it's all retro videogame music from bleep to bloop.

An irrigation canal like this is a big ditch to move water from a river to near farm fields. Without the extra water taken from the river, there wouldn't be enough water in the soil for crops to grow in the area.

Being a big ditch open to the sky, the hot sun and dry air make a bunch of the irrigation water evaporate before it even gets to the field. So we went to all the effort of taking water out of the river just to waste it humidifying the nearby air.

Why did we do it in the first place? Because it's way easier and cheaper to dig a ditch than to lay a big pipe, and I don't know if the US had any other water-delivery tech at the right scale when these were built.

Undertale is the obvious suggestion, although it's more deconstructive than Earthbound.

Even UTF-16 used by Windows isn't fair because it needs twice as much space for hieroglyphs. Won't someone think of the ancient Egyptians?

Seriously, now that most display systems can handle putting accents on letters instead of needing a code point just for รก, a new universal encoding would be nice. Purge it of Unicode's precomposed letters, duplicated Chinese characters, and duplicated-in-retrospect letters and you could fit another few alphabets into Plane 0.

But convincing tech companies to make webpages bigger seems difficult.

cURL is a very commonly used program to download individual files from the command line and worth installing to have it around in the future.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install curl

The first command tells your package manager to update its list so you ask for the latest version. You can skip it if you've already updated today. The second command tells your package manager to install cURL.

This will happen every now and then, especially when building a package from source. You won't have some common utility that the documentation writer assumed you had, and you will need to find what package provides it and install the package.

Those are SPC files, and that particular example was one rip of Final Fantasy VI (III)'s soundtrack.

Unfortunately, it only handles music embedded in Super Famicom/Super Nintendo games. To convert your own music to SPC, you'd have to rewrite it for the SNES sound chip.

Strawberry doesn't support about a dozen audio formats I use, so until it's got wider support I have to pass.

Instances running 0.18.0 can't communicate with any Kbin instance right now. Anything already synced is readable, but new subscriptions, posts, and comments fail. See https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3354 .

It's been a long time since I thought about Tenchi Muyo.

Because hard drives aren't getting any bigger lately and I don't want to multiply the size of my videogame music collection by ten?

You've just described the entire language of Toki Pona. The same string of words can mean "bear" or "elephant", and I copied a phrase someone used to mean "tiger trap" and it was read as "bamboo arch".

DQ5 wasn't the first generation game or the first monster-catching game, but it was one of the earlier games to offer either and AFAIK the first game to offer both.

Leave a bad review. I did get halfway back.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars might work. It's going to be difficult (fear the spear) and you'll want to use those items, but it is overall easier than Chrono Trigger. And it has a remake coming out soon with some system changes.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was intended for your situation, but it's balanced in all the ways you dislike.

Otherwise, possibly the very easiest remakes of old games like the Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster.

Why don't they advertise these things? Can they be bothered to list all the formats they support somewhere?

The even more efficient example was Mega Man 3. The standard rip format for NES music is far more efficient but also far more complex, requiring specialized skills to rip instead of a copy of ZSNES and a fast finger on the F1 button.

Edit: the standard rip format for NES music is NSF, but an expanded version NSFe is better if you can get it because it supports metadata like song names and lengths.

That looks like the point. They brought in using health to boost and spinning from F-Zero X, so just surviving to the finish line takes some skill and discipline.

For me it got good as soon as I went through the first time portal.
It got great at the second visit to the past.
It became immortal at the first visit to the dark ages.

I find the first visit to the future to be a slog for the most part, although it has one of the strongest scenes in the game. Power through that segment and it gets better in a hurry.

Also, don't play Chrono Trigger with the sound off until you can play the soundtrack in your head. The soundtrack doesn't gently suggest atmosphere like a modern game. It sets the tone for the scene.

Ten chiptune formats, two other videogame music formats (.at3 and .mab), WMA, IT, AAC, MP2, and MIDI.

qpdb are completely symmetrical in Bierstadt, so no.

As a technological problem it could have a technological partial solution: the darker the skin, the higher the threshold to declare a match. This would also mean more false negatives (real matches not caught by the software) but not much to do about that.

Dragon Quest is the OG for a reason. The remakes are a lot less grindy and don't use ye olde Englysshe so they would be easier to read but less educational.

The link goes to the wrong article. I think OP meant to post https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/07/11/libreoffice-24-2-5/ .

P.S. Torrents aren't available yet are now available.

The Magic of Scheherazade showed us that mixing turn-based and action RPG battles is harder than it sounds, so I'm a little worried about the balance here.

Really? 3,000 characters or more? By default?

The update hasn't happened for me yet, so we've still got some time to get used to Bierstadt a.k.a. Aptos. It has a curve at the bottom of the lower-case l like DejaVu Sans Mono and Cascadia Code, but without the top serif.

If you have one part of the Masamune, go to Porre and ask around.

If you have two parts of the Masamune, an in-game cutscene told you to visit Melchior, near Medina.

The old guy at the End of Time will often give you a useful hint if you're lost.

Agreed that it's wider at the same point size. Not sure if it's easier or harder to read yet, especially that "a". Seems a little heavier to counter display technology that makes old fonts so thin (and maybe superthin fonts falling out of fashion?). Probably blends better with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean due to being squarer and having shorter descenders, but I don't trust my eye.

@Cmar@lemmy.world If you buy the oldest FFs, 1-3, keep in mind that the versions on Steam have massive changes to game mechanics to make the games easier and more like FF7. I don't think it does FF1 any favors because the difficulty was a lot of what the game had going for it on replays, but if you just want to say you beat FF1 the Steam version does the job.

I'm thinking of picking up SaGa Frontier myself. Does it seem worth $15 to people?

There's nothing quite like Chrono Trigger.

Dragon Quest IV/Dragon Warrior IV was a strong influence on Chrono Trigger's medieval era. If you wanted an entire game about the Hero, DQ4 is the closest you're ever likely to get. (Does that make Recettear a sister game to Chrono Trigger?)

Phantasy Star IV has a similarly fast-moving and cinematic plot, but the graphics and gameplay are more archaic as befits a 1993 game. Strongly recommended if you want to play older JRPGs like DQ4.

Final Fantasy VI (released as "Final Fantasy III") is similar in quality and difficulty, but much longer and more complex.

Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross continue the story, but they have a much darker tone.

Earthbound/Mother 2 came out the same year and is another of the greats, but that's where most of the similarities end. Earthbound might be the only 16-bit classic whose tone is "all of them". Earthbound can be quite hard early on, so don't get discouraged.
