Orange County, where Disney World is located, went for the D candidate 53-46. Don't blame them for the malignant human tumor their state foisted on them.

LOCK HIM UP

I bet they could get the Democrats' help! All they have to do is nominate a Democrat for Speaker. What a beautiful opportunity for bipartisanship!

...wait that's not what they meant?

Rehabilitation doesn't mean the perpetrator won't spend years separated from society, just that the perp's sequestration happens in a setting meant to enable him/her to return to society in the distant future, assuming the perp becomes a changed person.

Nah, the remaining employees aren't the "dead wood" necessarily. They're all the ones on H1 visas who can't legally work in the US anywhere else (without taking a massive risk).

Ugh, gig workers need to be brought into some semblance of a minimum wage. Uber and Doordash are just techstortion.

I remember thinking a similar thing in early 2016

That "college friends" line always bugged me. I keep in closer touch with my good high school friends then I do with my old college friends.

"Sir you don't understand. We were being completely chaste while fucking the shit out of each other. We were just trying to prepare for that orgo exam."

That headline is doing the murderer's work by literally propagating his anti-LGBT terrorism. Shame on that periodical.

I actually appreciate this article. I'm not near where I need to be to invest in solar, but the details of the corporate fuckery that goes on in rooftop solar providers is helpful to learn.

Oh, shut up. There's nothing about discussing the underlying factors that contributed to this woman's death that is in any way disrespectful to the memory of the victim.

If I were to become a deceased victim, be it of crime, disease, or accident, I would want my death to be looked at enough to see if we can find ways to prevent others from suffering my same fate. To do less would be to negate the value behind my passing.

Less false piety, more conversations.

Quit making a martyr out of this loser and wannabe terrorist. He deserves to die in obscurity, not have his story told as part of the victim's own tale.

They're also very well crafted to force the narrative down one narrow, black-and-white path.

Republican politicians live by "I'll be gone, you'll be gone" at the end of the day.

They know the rest of us will be stuck holding the bag.

Eh, that may play a role for the big firms, but most of the small to mid sized businesses just lease their real estate. They'd realistically come out ahead by downsizing their offices.

I think what we are seeing is management really struggling to adapt and find reliable metrics for performance management as well as to promote employee retention and engagement without the social bonds of an office culture.

Are tourists being offered refunds on their flights and lodging?

All capitalism is, at its core, is the system of owning and investing capital for greater returns later. You can have that while regulating things--at least in theory.

There didn't even need to be a deliberate cartel for this to happen either.

Amazon realized it could make money and grow the company by offering cloud services and now AWS runs something like 30% of the internet.

Google turned their leading search algorithms into an extensive tracking and advertising platform that integrates with most of the internet.

Apple decided that people don't need to be allowed to tinker with and repair their own devices so that hardware can be locked into a four-year cycle of planned obsolescence.

A whole bunch of profit-maximizing firms did the hard job of controlling everything for the governments.

True, but I bet you that the 53 isn't able to do much about that 46. At least nothing that fits in the bounds of a civil democracy.

I agree... it feels like the Fediverse doesn't quite have the same algorithms that the single-corporation services have, and I feel it most in the search to broaden the content I see. Hopefully the exploratory element picks up as time goes on!

Is it bad that I read this and immediately think "my God it's mid September and the Australian cops have only murdered two civilians this year?"

I think the US hits that number within 5 minutes past midnight on the New Year.

I love the fediverse, but it hasn't fully solved the migration need problem. If I open an account on an instance which I later discover I don't like, I have to migrate for that as well.

The point as I see it is just limited to who do I want to follow, and what platforms can I use to do so? If bluesky turns to shit in a decade, but I get value out of it for that decade, maybe that's enough for my needs.

(FWIW, I am not on bluesky)

Conservatives "would"?

They literally just did. They invented fake rules about when a sitting president should be allowed to appoint justices and as a result our democracy will be completely gone within a decade.

This is Florida. I'm surprised no one has shot them or run them over already. No one likes Nazis

You're not wrong in your assessment, but part of the point of holding your government to account is that you hold the institution to a higher standard than the individuals it governs.

That doesn't show through in your write-up at all.

I expect this courtroom will be a shitshow. Trump's entire strategy right now seems to be to pray he can reclaim enough political power to keep himself out of prison. I fully expect him to play politics instead of law in that courtroom.

The way you present your message, it implies the effort was rejected statewide. That could be misleading some folks.

It was actually rejected by Carroll ISD, which is the school district covering the disproportionately white and wealthy suburb of Southlake, TX.

There are 1,021 more ISDs in Texas to go.

The way they behave I think they meant to use "and" instead of "or".

Sorry guys it's my fault. I canceled my D+ from my Hulu account when the prices went up. Didn't realize Disney would stage a full-on takeover of Hulu to get me back.

I2P is still around? I remember experimenting with it a decade ago. Sounds like it's still a slow experience.

Your "solution" is the exact sort of thing that led to a bunch of libertarian assholes ruining parts of rural New Hampshire, and much to the chagrin of the preexisting community.

There isn't really any open land anymore. It's all owned, overwhelmingly in private hands.

It's never the young kids that get offended by this stuff. That sort of bigotry is taught.

Is "Jews get the rope" an incitement to violence? Because these recent rallies seem to be hitting very close to what are the commonly-accepted limits on free speech in America.

Yeah this is an example of "lying with graphs 101".

The data probably didn't fit the narrative when they separate "always" and "sometimes"

Is he lying? He's just dressing formally and showing off how heels don't have to be just for women.

DeSantis for gender equity in clothing 2024. Let it happen (but don't vote for him plz).

Huh, I just checked US News and World Report, and they not only rank BYU higher than U of Utah but also list tuition as being cheaper than the public flagship universities.

I'll be damned. Probably by the Mormons.

Yes, because undergraduate students of color famously have access to the money and resources they need to enroll in out-of-state universities and move long distances across the nation.

For Boston specifically, they could rebuild the Long Island Bridge, which before its demolition was a usable footpath for addicts seeking treatment to get to Long Island, which at one point housed a hospital and even after the hospital's closure offered facilities for those in need including a homeless shelter and rehabilitation programs.

The area the article discusses, called politely "Mass and Cass," is also referred to as "methadone mile" and it does not really have comparable facilities to help those in need. Methadone mile sprang up when the BU medical center became the only real place where addicts can get treatment to try and wean off their drug addiction, and it's a real problem even for the addicts as there is very easy access to genuine opiods.

Stressful street living + constant presence of dealers + no facilities besides a regulated hospital = a really fucking impossible way to kick your addiction.

Methadone mile needs to go. Boston also needs the neighboring town of Quincy to stop fighting the rebuilding of the Long Island Bridge.

23andme requires you to agree to what they ask, which is far more than what Johns Hopkins did for Henrietta Lacks.
