I don't think you even need consent-o-matic. uBlock Origin can block the cookie popups (it's just not enabled by default)

Just a side note - Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is one of the primary investors of Nothing Phone https://us.nothing.tech/pages/about

The feature I absolutely love on Opera mobile is it will dynamicly wrap text and adjust the page layout to a single column when you zoom in/out. So for pages with small text, you can zoom in to see enlarged text and just scroll down to read - where on all other browsers you have to scroll horizontally back and forth to read the enlarged text.

Opera has been doing this brilliantly for at least 10 years, and I have yet to see this on any other mobile browsers I've tried.

In the 1970's Exxon not only knew about climate change due to the burning of their fossil fuels, they accurately predicted global warming projections. And studies by their internal scientists continued to predict and verify global warming in a bunch of reports between 1977 and 2003. Yet they still continued to lobby against renewable energy and admitted that they still aggressively fought climate change science.

The best part is it works with Android as well. Whenever I turn my computer on, all my photos on my phone sync to my computer to a folder that gets regularly backed up (using Vorta which is an excellent and easy to use open source backup program for Windows, Linux, and Mac)

I found an old TV on Craigslist for $10 for my Genesis.

Material Files is by far the best file browser.

When turning off my Samsung TV, every once in a while it decides to turn itself back on about 5 minutes later. This has been going on for several years now.

It doesn't happen every time, and seems to happen randomly as I can't replicate the conditions in which it happens. It didn't happen when I bought the TV, so I suspect it started after Samsung pushed a firmware update. It's a bug others are experiencing with the same model TV and I've tried every fix people suggested online, factory reset the TV, and updated the firmware. My conclusion is that it's a bug that Samsung needs to fix, but I'm confident they won't given the TV is about 5 years old now.

I bought a brand new Lenovo Yoga laptop, and when connecting to my TV via HDMI, the TV occasionally goes black for a second or 2 then comes back. It doesn't happen at all when streaming video full screen, only when doing something simple like browsing the Internet. Happens with Windows and Linux, although it's more frequent on Linux.

Vorta is a great program for backing up files. Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Here's a really nice script to debloat a new Windows install. I bought a new Windows 11 laptop and this made it super easy:

How do I get started with Mastodon? Are there multiple instances to choose from like Lemmy, or do you just sign up on mastodon.social?

Also, it looks like you can access Lemmy communities from there - so how is it different than just using Lemmy?

Why isn't KDE Neon ever recommended? It seems like it would be a solid option.

I have to keep a Windows install around for the sole purpose of pushing firmware updates to my Headrush pedal board. The installer will run on Linux with Wine, but it cannot detect the pedalboard through the USB connection.

Check out your local library as well. Mine lets you print 2 pages for free each time you go in, and it's super cheap to print more.

Well done.

Opera has had this functionality for 10+ years on their mobile browser, and I would argue that it has always been their best feature by far as it has always worked beautifully. I just don't understand how no other browser has implemented this feature.

Check out the "Screen Rotate" gnome extension (by shyzus). It adds a button in the gnome quick settings menu that allows you to disable auto rotate, and has the option to add a button to manually switch between portrait or landscape rotation.

Uhh Yeah Dude They've been doing the podcast since 2006, and coming up on their 1000th episode. Listener supposed and ad free. Just two guys trying to figure it all out.

There will be more than just two parties on the presidential ballot.

Beyond Pod hasn't been updated since January 2021. It used to be the best podcast app by far, but is now quite buggy and broken on newer versions of Android.

AntennaPod is what I use now. A fantastic app that is free, no ads, and completely open source.

The fact that they release Cura for free, make it available on all platforms (Mac/Windows/Linux), continuously improve and update it, and have incorporated the setup of basically every 3D printer you can buy is amazing.

Also, octoprint is free and open source and is incredible as well.

How is the software experience with Fairphone? Is it generally pretty stable and bug free?

I use my Windows work laptop as my personal laptop by booting Ubuntu off an external SSD. It is connected through the laptop's thunderbolt USB C port, and Ubuntu runs smoothly without any issues as if it were off the internal drive. And not the most elegant solution, but I have Velcro strips on the drive and laptop, so to transform from work computer to personal, I just stick the drive on, plug it in, and boot up Linux! And the best part is that because it's a completely different drive, there are no personal files/data actually saved on the work computer.

No, they still have the alert slider. It wasn't on the OnePlus 10, but they brought it back on the 11 and it looks like it will be included on the upcoming 12.

At least you're not emailing yourself files.

I haven't had the laptop long enough to know what happens after updates. However, if Microsoft wants to reset any of the changes or reinstall software or features, they will regardless of what methods or tools you've used to debloat. I like this tool because it's easy to run and can be done periodically (like after major updates) without much hassle. And it's open source on GitHub which I very much appreciate.

I'm interested in more details if you want to share. What are the other specs/components of your machine? What OS and software do you run? How do you handle backups?

From a technical perspective I'm curious - how would they know a drive has been added without physically inspecting the laptop?

A dash cam was definitely one of the best purchases I've made. I was able to submit video to the insurance company to show a collision wasn't my fault. It has also captured some other random interesting events like an electrical transformer explosion during a storm.

How does one go about doing this?
