This happens. Recently we had a problem in production where our database grew by a factor of 10 in just a few minutes due to a replication glitch. Of course it took down the whole application as we ran out of space.

Some things just happen and all head room and monitoring cannot save you if things go seriously wrong. You cannot prepare for everything in life and IT I guess. It is part of the job.

Unfortunately they are very in your face unless you fully submit to their view. They belittle your efforts if it is anything but outright revolution, cheer on horrible regimes and deny genocides. Very US centric point of view.

Of course it is not all of them, but that's what you will experience very soon if you interact with them, because it is a radicalized echo chamber let loose.

Our instance actually managed to get defederated from them though. Although it wasn't handled well from either side they seriously only dish out, but can't take a hit. I won't say that nothing of value was lost, because there were a few moderate users and of course some interesting content might be lost, but overall my lemmy experience got better without them.

No, I don't use reddit anymore. Kinda. I sometimes visit Reddit due to search results. Otherwise there is not much I miss or care about.

The content isn't as plenty here, but it is still giving me my mindless scrolling fix.

It is just unfortunate that it does not run on Nvidia hardware. The benchmark runs if you disable all RTX features, but it crashes on a new game before you even have full control of the character.

Looking at protondb it looks like all people with Nvidia have issues since the 2.0 update. I hope there will be some fix soon. I don't want to replace the GPU yet it would be a waste (2080 Super).

For now I am playing it on my Steam Deck instead.

The part you see isn't mold, but the spores. Mold almost looks like spider webs and it is very hard to see without a microscope. If there is anything visible it means the actual mold had already grown much further and deeper. As others have said you can cut of the visible part plus an inch or so for hard cheese (and some vegetables or apples), but for other cheeses or food it is a no. Throw it all away. At that point it already spread throughout most of the food.

I am surprised that vi is often available, but not vim. It's really annoying on many RHEL based distros, because I am so used to typing vim. Otherwise there is just git I deem essential.

So what? If BDSM folks feel represented by LGBTQ+ they have every right to be part of it. What's wrong with BDSM anyway?

Not like LGBTQ+ promotes anything at all besides that it is okay to be who you are.

In general it is safe to install as many DEs as you want. There is some overlap between (user) configuration files though which might be annoying.

It should be fine to experiment, but you might need to restore some settings afterwards. For daily use I would just stick to one DE. Personally I don't think there is really a reason to use multiple DEs as a single user. It would throw me off and mess with my workflow.

Also keep in mind that many DE also provide a set of default tools which add clutter. So you probably want to keep it low for this reason alone.

If people ask me what distro to choose I say Mint.

Unless you already know what you want and need it is simply the best distro out there to get your feet wet. It is very competent in what it is doing and can be used by anyone no matter the experience.

Even though I believe there are better distros out there this is the only one I would recommend to people new to Linux and it is still a solid choice for experienced users alike. You can use it forever or branch out from there, both are very valid choices.

Python is stupid. Using non printable characters as anything other than token separation is just asking for trouble.

Ctrl/Shift+Insert gang rise!

You can work around most issues in any language with the right tools. That's not the point.

If a design decision introduced a whole new class of errors it is probably just bad design.

It is unlikely that Cataclysm ever goes on sale, because the steam release basically is just a donation. You can get the game for free on the official website: https://cataclysmdda.org

There you can also donate other amounts than the Steam price.

It feels like you can join in later. There are not thousands of replies in the first few hours. So commenting or participating was a waste of time before in many bigger subs. Noone would ever see your answer anyway or interact with you, so there was really no point.

Here it feels like you are actually participating in some way. I really like it.

Arch is supposed to be used, it is a normal distribution. It is not hard, it is simple. That's its whole philosophy.

It is only difficult if you are new to Linux, because it doesn't hold your hands and has no opinion about a lot of things hence you must make many decisions yourself and configure everything like you need it. You have to know what you need and want.

The notion of a difficult distro for the sake of it is ridiculous. Who would ever want to use it? Arch is popular, because it is easy to use, but lets you configure the system to your desires for the most part.

How did we get here? What a bad take. Consent is obviously required, it's that simple.

Neither children nor animals can consent therefore they are not welcome in any shape or form. This also excludes rape and other forms of abuse from any LGBTQ+ space/group/community.

Because the sun is also a depleting source of energy. I question the definition of renewable that's all.

I would have never considered nuclear energy being renewable, but I guess a similar argument could be made.

It is less prone to input errors. That's true, but all other points I disagree with. Gestures are faster on a larger device, because you don't have to relocate your fingers. Additionally they are easier to use on a larger screen for the same reason.

It's just what you are used to and I don't like that gestures are not as intuitive as buttons (worse UI/feedback), but they do work better overall and that's a fair tradeoff.

It took a few attempts and switching back and forth until it really clicked, but it is so much better on a larger device.

Why though? I think I am missing the point, but I don't see the problem with having a build step in your projects. Especially for frontend it is not just JavaScript, but things like Sass/SCSS to consider etc.

I like the smell of my partner in the morning, but not after a hot sunny day. I think there are different levels of unwashed to consider.

Sounds like you don't clean your package cache. You can enable the paccache.timer to handle it for you on a weekly basis.

Scrubs unfortunately has a few transphobic and homophobic jokes. One episode is particularly bad. I rewatched it recently and it really stood out.

Many good choices here. I didn't see Half Life Alyx here yet. It is an amazing game which alone is almost worth the cost of VR.

There is not really anything to learn. It is just lacking some useful features and shortcuts which make it slower to use. It's still much better than nothing.

Usually my biggest issue is that I am so used to write vim over vi. At least for small edits.

Personally I didn't like Deepin and I didn't really use it for long so I can't say much about it. Anyway, it is part of the the extra repositories of Arch, so you can expect a current and maintained version.

It should be the same for other Arch based distros. Just stay clear of Manjaro. It should not be used by anyone.

Isn't the daily amount like 0 you need? So Infinity % for any added amount?

This is actually an honest question, because you can easily cover your daily needs with other carbs and even those are technically not necessarily as it can be metabolized by fat in your body, but no point in bending the truth here. The body needs sugar one way or the other, but none of them are processed sugars and should probably come from rice, potatoes or bread instead.

Most people with good intentions do something wrong at some point.

It is inevitable that people hurt people even if they never intended to.

Intent makes you transphobic. Just treat trans people like normal people. Especially apply the same boundaries. It is simple, no reason to overthink it.

Probably just my chef knife. But that's an obvious and boring answer.

My choice would be my hand blender. I use it for making any dips, many sauces (it is made out of metal) and it also got a blender attachment for shredding vegetables. One of the best investments I made for my kitchen.

I don't really have that problem myself, but I fully agree anyway. It does not matter what your use case is. It is 2023, flash storage is cheap and we can get much more storage for any other device for a fraction of the cost. $100 is ridiculously overpriced.

Honestly by now I would have expected 1 TB to be the default, but somehow we got stuck with low internal storage for the past 10 years.

I am gay people? Finally some great news today!

You could try disabling VRR in your display settings. I believe it is set to auto by default if supported, but it does not work properly for some monitors causing flickering.

It's just sorted alphabetically (technically it is the UTF16 code order). To be fair it's a sane default for most use cases. In JS case you can define a very simple callback to change the behavior to numeric sorting (a,b => a<b). Many other sorters provide a flag instead, but numeric sorting is seldom the default as it is not as useful most of the time in weakly typed languages.

Yea, kinda. It forces it hard though.

There is no obvious way to skip the MS account. You can select that it is a managed device and create a local user that way, but afaik that's the last option left and obviously it is there for a very different intention.

I am sure that if MS could remove it completely they would.

I am old school :)

There is one thing though. Trans people are not all the same and have different ideas. I don't agree with every person I have talked to and they can seemingly be as much of a bigot as any other person.

No matter what you try or do that's an unsolvable problem as it has nothing to do with being trans in particular. There is no single truth free from bigotry.

As I said don't overthink it. Just treat any trans person with the same dignity and respect as any other person. Really, that's already the best you can do and all most trans people are asking for.

I bought Elden Ring during the last Steam sale.

The world is intriguing, but there is a real plot hook missing. I still don't know the real motivation of my character after 40 hours of gameplay. The reason why I am there and why I care. It was never explained why I want to become an elden lord and what that really means. Some of the stuff will be probably explained at some point, but as I said I don't understand the motivation or why my character started the journey in the first place.

There really is not much story so far. There is probably a lot of lore hidden, but most places, events, bosses, quests etc feel disconnected or shallow. I really would love to pick up some of the books in all the places, but that's not possible. As I said the world is intriguing, but it is probably all just cryptic stuff with many blanks left. Lore wise it can't be all a big mystery and it doesn't feel like most of it is, but it is never conveyed to the player.

The world is beautiful, there are many weird places. Having the big glowing tree in the background is an amazing set piece in an otherwise grim dark world.

Gameplay wise the progression feels really slow and it is hard to change the playstyle due to limited resources early on. I am unsure if I like that yet. It doesn't invite the player to try out some of the new toys you find though which is a bummer.

Besides that it is the first real Souls like I got into and the difficulty seems reasonable. The lack of quick saves is an interesting design choice. Every failure hits a bit harder, but it also inhibits experimentation.

I can't really explain why I like this game, but so far I am having fun. The world looks and feels great, the gameplay is fun. It's just the story or storytelling aspect of the game which could be so much better.

I was about to write the same thing. Really the object thing is the whole reason to use ORMs.

Using plain SQL is a compatibility and migration nightmare in medium and bigger sized projects. If anything using plain SQL is just bad software design at least in an OOP context.
