I know 1.7.10, 1.8.9, and 1.12.2 exist. I'm not sure the story behind them, I just know they are common versions people like to play still. 1.8.9 for PvP and Hypixel and 1.12.2 for 2b2t. I'm not sure about 1.7.10 though.

GNU's Hurd was supposed to be this iirc. That clearly hasn't gotten far and hasn't been progressing quickly.
