Tech bros reinvent broadcast TV.

I just... I can't bring myself to give a shit about Taylor Swift's airplanes when BP and Shell still exist and capitalism is still the dominant economic system.

Stop confusing democrats/liberals with leftists.

Democrats will probably almost universally agree that he's been a good president. Tribalism is a hell of a drug.

It's the leftists that won't. And speaking as a leftist, he's done a lot better than I thought he was going to. He ended up pushing for more progressive ideas than I thought he would. Good for him. He's been stymied by the courts and his own party on some of them. And that why I, as a leftist, think the democratic party is still (less) trash. They had a majority for two years. Did some stuff. Could have done more. You can be all "but but Manchin/Sinema" all you want, but I'll bet all the money in my pocket against all the money in your pocket, than if Manchin and Sinema were to announce that yes, they'd vote to abolish the filibuster, there would be two other democratic senators who would come out and say no. And that's fine as it relates to their world view. They're liberals. They're not leftists.

I once dropped a table in a production database.

I never should have had write permissions on that database. You can bet they changed that when clinicians had to redo four days of work because the hosting company or whatever only had weekly backups, not daily.

So, I feel your pain.

Probably vote blue all the way down the line but I'm going to be shitting on the democratic party publicly and loudly for all the fucked and/or cowardly shit they do because not as bad != not bad.

I think, generally, most people don't really give a shit about oil and gas workers. They're just trying get food and housing just like everyone else. People hate oil and gas companies though, and that hatred is righteous and justified.

10 isn't the best base and I'm sick of pretending it is.

I was listening to a podcast about AI. I think it was one of Ezra Kleins. And he was telling a story that he heard, bout those weird virtual reality games from the 90s or early Aughts. And people shat on those games because they were awful and clunky and not very good so that shitting was well deserved. But one guy was like "yeah, that's all true. But this is the worst it's going to be. The next iteration isn't going to be worse than this."

And that's where AI is now. Like, it's powerful and already a threat to certain jobs. GPT 3/4 may be useless to software engineering jobs now (I'd argue that it's not - I work in a related field and I use it about daily) but what about GPT 5? 6? 10?

Im not as doom and gloom on AI as I was six months ago, but I think it's a bit silly to think that AI isn't going to cause massive upheaval across all industries in the medium to long term.

But also, for the record, I'm less worried about AI than I am about AI in the hands of Capitalism.

I mean, kudos to you for having the energy to get so far down the list of things that actually matter about climate change that you reach the one person and a few private jets section of the list, but I'd rather use that brain space to play a board game or something.

🎶 Hitler's mom has got it going on 🎶

But there's no 's' in - ohhhhh.

I've cut my reddit consumption drastically but I haven't dropped it completely. There are two communities that I still check out a few times per week and I still Google "what is the best ______ reddit" or "how do I do ______ reddit" when I need to. But I'm never scrolling r/all anymore.

Welcome to the professional world where everything is iterative and and 95% of your clients (internal or external) are data illiterate and don't want to learn whatever self service tools you build.

I'm not advocating violence, I'm just saying politicians have gotten a lot more brazen with their corruption and hypocrisy since we stopped using guillotines.

Older me kinda wishes younger me had considered accounting, but younger me was hung up on your first point. Younger me didn't want a boring job. Older me is like "I don't have to love my job, I just have to not hate it. I can do the things I love during my time." And a low key, low stress, high autonomy job kinda nails that. I'm kind of accounting adjacent (data analyst) and it's working out so far, but there's probably more salary stability in your career vs mine. The February to May crunch kinda scares me tho.

Novo Nordisk is a Danish company, not American.

Right. But based on context clues, it's implied that the full meaning of the post was "Volvo did something for the public good, therefor Volvo is good. Volvo is a Swedish company. Swedish companies are good. Sweden is in Europe. European countries are good. American countries are bad. Novo Nordisk did something bad. It must be an American company."

Admittedly, my mistake was not being more clear about the point of my response which is that geography is irrelevant - capitalism and all companies are evil (or at best, amoral).

I once dropped a table in the production database. I did not replace it with the same table from staging.

On the bright side, we discovered our vendor wasn't doing daily backups.

Eh, I'm of two minds about the strike. On the one hand, he got the rail workers their sick days after the fact. On the other, he really pissed me off and threw labor under the bus by making it illegal (again) for them to strike. You can't be a pro labor president and take away labors most powerful tool.

I don't know anything about the BBB.

The guy who made up the major questions doctrine from whole cloth? Lol.

Have we gotten that stupid?

Something something "these regulations are written in blood" anecdote something something.

Then I'm saying "at least he's not openly fascist but the democratic party still fuckin sucks."

I've left a dozen or so jobs over my entire life. One because the job was eliminated, five or six because school was starting/ending, one because the manager was a prick, and the rest exclusively because I was offered more money.

Those guards are class traitors 🤷‍♂️

I'm not terribly hopeful. I'm an older millennial. As I've gotten older, I've watched my friends grow up, get jobs, have kids, move to the suburbs, etc. They got a little bit of what's theirs (obviously not enough, but still) and they want to protect it. They vote to protect their investment in their house and to keep their school district good. They're nowhere near fascist like the current crop of republican politicians, but they're scared and that leads them to voting more small c conservatively. You and I both know that republican policies are trash and that the values espoused in theory by the democratic party are better for them. But they finally made it. They're prizing stability or better, because change is scary.

Will the super racist republican party base die out? Maybe. Probably. But they're just going to be replaced by center right democrats. Sure, that's better, but not so much better that it'll fix all the problems we have. Maybe the gen-Zers can do something about it, but I'm afraid their political power will be dwarfed by the sheer size of the Millennial generation.

I still check out a couple hobby subs every day or two (via mobile browser, not the app). And if I'm looking for a certain type of information or advice, im still typing "[info desired] reddit" into google.

When I turned 30 or whatever age you have to be to run for Senate, I thought about have a fake but real senate run campaign announcement where my entire platform would be to punch Mitch McConnell or other GOP congressmembers in the neck every time they were hypocritical sacks of shit.

I mean, it doesn't matter what we actually do, Republicans are going to call anyone on the left unhinged and violent and whatever else anyways. Might as well actually use that as cover.

Dude, Medicaid and Medicare are awesome. Why do you think seniors protect Medicare so fiercely? And Medicaid, for its faults with a lower number of providers, is still great coverage. I'd trade my high deductible plan for it tomorrow if i could.

"Vote for the party that isn't willing to change the broken system" isn't the hard sell you think it is.

"properly managed" is carrying a whole lotta weight in that first sentence.

The democrats have had outright control of the senate for six of the past twenty years, they had caucus control (for lack of a better term) of the senate since January 2021. If they wanted to end the filibuster, they could have.

For the record, I've voted in every presidentialand midterm election - and most primary and local elections too - since 2003, voting almost straight democratic every single time. So I've toed the party line for damn near 20 hears.

I can't believe I had to scroll this far to see The Green Bone Saga mentioned. Get the choreographers from Into the Badlands to work on this show. Shit, with half decent make up Daniel Wu could probably play Kaul Hilo.

I wish Buffalo was closer in size to Cleveland or Pittsburg, but being within driving distance of Toronto and to a lesser extent NYC (on top of the aforementioned Cleveland and Pittsburg) is pretty friggin great.

I mean, I'll grant that he's been pretty effective, but let's not forget the dude had both the House and Senate for the first two years of his term.

Like, you can cry "but Manchin and Senema!" all you want, but are you really going to try and tell me Mitch McConnell wouldn't have gotten those two motherfuckers in line?

Pretty sure "but the democratic party still fuckin sucks" covers all that.

Aha, that's fair. I got a friend to join my PF2e campaign by saying "the mechanical building blocks are all the same. Roll a d20 and a number, total determines success." which is, I think, an accurate description despite what a lot of PF2e players will say.

That being said, you have any suggestions for someone who likes the the tactical nature and crunch of PF2e and doesn't really have an interest in rules light or narrative driven games (my hot take: narrative drive exists independent of rule set - you can have a narrative driven PF2e game or any other rule system). I feel like Lancer or 13th Ave are probably the most likely candidates, but wondering if there are others.

Not everything needs to be base 10.

I guess?

Like, there's been a Democratic president for 11 of the past 20 years, and of those 11 years half of them democrats had unified executive and legislative control. And with that, gun violence has gotten worse, climate change has gotten worse, Roe was still overturned, the voting rights act was gutted and not fixed and any number of other issues. The democratic party message is always "vote for us, we'll make things better!" and we're just sitting over here like Charlie Brown. We're pissed off because we have voted for Democrats and things aren't better.
