Discord isn't a good alternative, it's not the same type of social media site. Discord is more of a chatroom aggregator, while Reddit is more of a forum aggregator. While Reddit technically supports chats and Discord technically supports threads, in both cases they're clunky and not the main point of the site.

Unfortunate but predictable. Reddit and u/spez have decided that third-party apps are going to die, and nothing is going to stop them. The "talks" they were offering to interested devs were always just a show, as this clearly demonstrates.

Ah yes, it is a well known fact that if your girlfriend sees a picture of you both with her head higher, she will immediately break up with you. This is a normal human interaction that all people do.

This is going to be painful for us as a species. I don't think it will render us extinct, but the weather will get significantly worse and we will probably see widespread coastal flooding in this century, which will lead to hundreds of millions of refugees. We still have plenty of time to prepare and to change course, but I fear that we will wait until a global crisis is on our doorstep before we make serious changes.

Twitter and Truth Social have already captured the right-wing market, kowtowing to their demands is not going to earn Threads new users and will discourage moderates from signing up.

It's because they claim that they don't actually do any deliveries, they just maintain the tech platform that connects independent contractors to delivery jobs. They do this for legal reasons, because if you think about it all jobs technically just connect people to tasks that they complete.

Tech enthusiasts tend to make up the early adopters of a new social media platform, and programmers tend to have some level of passion for technology.

This isn't a state national guard, it's a state guard. According to the legislation that created it, the United States federal government has no jurisdiction over the new state guard and cannot nationalize it, meaning they are unable to control it like they can with a state national guard.

That's really cool. This is a good use-case example of Mastadon, the government can run its own official instance for announcements and information without impacting other instances

Disgusting. DeSantis is obviously trying to create armed forces loyal only to him to do his bidding, which can only have disastrous consequences. The damage he would do to American institutions as president would be incalculable, and he would probably destroy foreign relations between the United States and every other country.

Currently, we're being a little more lax with the support questions because of how new Lemmy is. Once the platform has matured a bit more, we'll move to being more strict about enforcing our rules on support questions.

Edit: Ignore me, I'm a dumbass and forgot which instance I'm looking at.

Deeply unfortunate that something like this could happen, you always hope that code injection vulnerabilities are found before someone is hacked. With that in mind, this shows the importance of two security principles: always parse and clean user input and don't click links (including images) before checking where they are going to send you.

Damn, OP didn't personally craft this meme, and actually found it somewhere else? I am shocked.

Nice try religionists. I think therefore I am.

If the models were trained on pirated material, the companies here have stupidly opened themselves to legal liability and will likely lose money over this, though I think they're more likely to settle out of court than lose. In terms of AI plagiarism in general, I think that could be alleviated if an AI had a way to cite its sources, i.e. point back to where in its training data it obtained information. If AI cited its sources and did not word for word copy them, then I think it would fall under fair use. If someone then stripped the sources out and paraded the work as their own, then I think that would be plagiarism again, where that user is plagiarizing both the AI and the AI's sources.

Sorry, the tomato's got to stay in the burger, it's part of the artistic process.

Congratulations to Nepal. Though this ruling isn't perfect, it sets up a road to eventual full marriage equality, which is a really good thing. Hopefully other nations in the region soon follow, I'm happy to see news like this even as other nations backslide into more extreme conservatism.

For the best. Knowing that this hacking technique is a vulnerability with the Lemmy project as a whole, I think it's reasonable for instances to temporarily close while a fix is implemented.

This is why a paper trail is so important. When shit hits the fan they will always try to blame you, so you need written or audio proof that they issued the order.

A mixture of social conservatives voting against "wokeness," unrestricted guns rights and anti-abortion one-issue voters, and people that misguidedly believe the Republicans are better for the economy keep the party chugging along in elections.

Just for reference, Voyager is the new name for the app that used to be called wefwef. As such, wefwef.app and vger.app are both pointing to the same thing.

I'm not really heartbroken for Threads, just identifying market trends. Right-wingers aren't bad people inherently, but right-wing policies and political organizations are absolutely far worse than their centrist and left-wing equivalents.

Technically it was "Cash money" of them, that money just apparently isn't for you.

This would be extremely chaotic and probably ruin social relations, but would be really funny until workplaces collapsed.

I'm in the same boat. I've set up shop at lemm.ee just in case but I still like VLemmy and hope that it comes back online.

I'd say to give it a bit longer before pushing average Redditors to come here. Lemmy is still unstable, and things like the sudden fall of VLemmy or the hacking of Lemmy.world can be enough to get normal users to give up on a new platform.

The sudden death of VLemmy and temporary closing of lemmy.world pushed a bunch of people here I think.

Indeed, I think number 15 if I remember correctly. I hope that it's ok, it's my home instance and is where I was posting the majority of my account content.

I get the nostalgia factor, but bird dinos are cool as hell. They look more like things that would actually be alive, which helps make them feel more awesome to me.

Ah yeah, that's the type of thing where you only find it from luck.

It might be that they are machinery that moves heavy things, so our brain makes the association with heavy machinery.

I just checked DNS sales websites, vlemmy.net is still reserved apparently. The web page is still being served half-heartedly and if I let it load a long time the post feed still appears, so I think the server is experiencing some form of critical error.

Thanks, now I know how to feel greasy and salty.

That's fair, but sometimes a malicious actor will attempt to covertly contribute code that introduces a security vulnerability.

I've noticed the most idiotic dogs are also the happiest! The dogs that are unwilling to be more playful or dumb are often nervous or reserved, so I'm sure George is living his best life!

Indeed, this is a real weak spot with Lemmy's security. I honestly think we need to place more emphasis on implementing OAuth2, when I have the time I'll have to take a look at that again to see if I'm able to.

Nice. Probably won't work, but I appreciate that their parents have the ingenuity to come up with stuff like this.

I like to have one main account I use for most of my interaction, but I've learned recently and the hard way why I should maintain a backup.

The app developer wanted a new and more serious name for the app and Voyager got the most support on a handful of community posts.
