I'm starting to think maybe Elon isn't the 'free speech absolutist' he claimed to be.

No fair, she can see that we're cheating and is willing to call us out on it!
This is really weird. The AI stuff is weird, but also, this zoo is local to me, and it's weird that somewhere just up the road a bit is making national news because of this. I've fed their giraffes many times; I haven't been there since the spotless one was born, though.
Never say Boebert three times.
Honest question; why would someone need a touchscreen, or a display at all beyond a battery indicator, on their earbuds case?
I find the lack of Space Quest titles in this thread unsettling. For me, it's Space Quest IV, but they are all absolute gems.
Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who assisted Mr. Giuliani in his efforts to keep Mr. Trump in power after he lost in 2020, expressed frustration over the looming legal costs a few days after her indictment in the case. “Why isn’t MAGA, Inc. funding everyone’s defense?” she asked last week on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Oh look, a crack in the wall.
"Have you tried reclassifying them, and then declassifying them again?"
I was with this guy at first, blaming rich men for the exploitation of mine workers. But then, in verse two, he turns around and points the finger at people receiving welfare. I stopped listening after the quip about "Fudge Rounds." Just shows that these kinds of conservatives correctly identify the problem, yet are still brainwashed into blaming the poor. The cognitive dissonance is intense.
Oh, it's going to be great if there's a camera on him in court. Not because I particularly want to see him, but because I know that the presence of cameras will greatly increase his likelihood of acting up, speaking out of turn, and repeating false things, all for his "audience." We'll see how long it takes for him to forget he's in a court of law and not in a talk show interview chair.
This is what you get after years of just switching off the power instead of shutting down safely.
Oh yeah. Vivek Ramaswamy, who is an Indian American, is running a blatantly white supremacist campaign. The mind boggles.
Nothing about the dude makes sense - including the apparent hope that American conservatives who bristled at the name Kamala ("She is named after a Hindu goddess! Literal satanism!") would vote for someone whose name is Vivek Ramaswamy.
Same.
It started off pretty well but all day today I've been fighting with my health insurance (again) because they have decided they don't want to cover an essential medication that my partner has been on for years (again). Things are moving forward, our primary doctor just gave us over a month's worth of samples so we won't run out while we fight, and they are compiling documentation to make a case. I've never had to fight to have meds covered like I have with our prescription provider this year, it's the worst. I had to fight them earlier this year to get them to cover long-acting insulin. Insulin! Ridiculous.
Other than that, can't complain.
I have some stuff at work that requires 2fa too. I have an old iphone with no SIM in it in my office, I use it for authentication and that's it :)
The fact that Vivek Ramaswamy honestly believes that today's GOP will vote for someone named Vivek Ramaswamy is a contender for the most oblivious take of the election cycle so far.
As an aside... How could an Indian American be anti-diversity and supportive of "Restoring America's National Identity?" Has no one told him that's code for White Supremacy?
Edit: Upon reviewing the rest of his campaign site, holy crap this dude is the worst. I want more diversity in politics. I want Indian Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and other POC to represent our nation, including the presidency. But... no, not like this.
I really enjoy the community here on Beehaw, even though I mostly lurk and rarely post/comment. I do support Beehaw and will stay even if the platform changes. That said - and I speak only for my own experience here - I don't subscribe to any categories outside of Beehaw itself, just because (a) I know how the fediverse can be, and (b) there's a LOT out there, and I like the simplicity of a smaller community. For those reasons, adopting a whitelist would not impact my experience on Beehaw much, if at all. Wanted to say this in case it resonates with other users. Thanks for all you do.
Oof, yeah. The 3310s are basically bricks now with so many carriers discontinuing 3G service. Nokia makes a couple of 4G feature phones, the 225, the 6300, and the 2780 Flip. The 225 runs S30, the 6300 and 2780 run KaiOS so they have some app support like a web browser, but functionality is very limited. And you won't get good photos out of any of them.
If you're looking for privacy, look into the Fairphone. If you're looking for a feature-rich phone that will force you to use it a lot less, look into Sunbeam. They run a stripped-down variant of Android with only the most basic functions.
I got a Unihertz Titan Pocket earlier this year, I highly recommend those too, though they run Android 11 so if you are serious about privacy you'll probably want to do some degoogling. Its camera is... okay.
I use fish mainly just for the quality of life increase that its predictive features and command history give. I also really like that it uses functions to play the role of aliases, and it's super easy to write and save new functions on the fly.
That said... I haven't put in the time to really learn its nuances and I still write shell scripts using bash. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but it works for me.
"Mad World" is the classic "what do you mean that's a cover?" song... here are some great ones that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Looks like a certain candidate may find himself double-booked on March 4.
This may be true, but how much time does it take to surface to avoid decompression sickness if they are found? This, of course, assumes that the surface in the same vehicle.
I used a dumbphone for quite a while last year and honestly loved it. I have a small collection of them at this point since they are relatively inexpensive.
Today I use a Unihertz Titan Pocket which is technically an android, but looks like a Blackberry. I've gotten a bunch of comments on it. It will certainly do more than I need, but I've disabled the play store and use it mostly like a dumb phone, with the exception of streaming music, which the dumbphones obviously wouldn't do. I bought a dedicated mp3 player for that purpose, so that's not the feature that brought me back.
I switched because while I could absolutely use the dumbphone to do everything I needed to do, group texts were ultimately the thing that brought me back to an android. Though it's been a known issue for many years, group texting on Nokia's feature phones is just bad... when it works at all. I still keep an eye on the dumbphone market and will absolutely switch back when group text messages are sorted out.
I left Thunderbird ultimately because of dwindling O365 support. How is it now? My work and school emails are all O365, because evidently companies think Microsoft is the only option.
That's possible. My impression is that from the audio alone, it's not clear that he allowed others to actually read the documents. He seems to be showing them to others, but it'd be difficult to prove from the audio alone.
What is clear, however, is that he knew he had the documents, he knew they were classified, he knew he had not declassified them, and he knew that he couldn't do it anymore. He lied repeatedly about these things, and to my knowledge, that's the crux of the case against him. I'm certainly no legal expert, though.
I have a pretty straightforward solution. I keep a text file called 'todo' in my Syncthing sync folder, and I added 'cat Sync/todo' to my Fish greeting.
can't live without:
That's it really, my needs are simple.
Also, TIL about "I don't care about cookies" so I'm tempted to install that, but I do sort of care about cookies... but I also clear them relatively frequently, so it's probably fine.
I have Comic Mono too, it's great. I'm using Comic Code for ligature support.
My old Ultima Online character's name was Tintagel (like the castle from Arthurian legend). I used LadyTintagel as a username for a long time, and eventually it was shortened to just Tin.
"Dad, don't call me Jeezy Creezy! Holy Ghost, this is not an episode of Scooby Doo!"
It's an android, so yes. Spotify, Deezer, YT Music are all options.
I didn't know, so I went and looked. There is indeed an option to record calls.
Sorry, I tend to gush a little bit about Genesis, they're one of my favorite bands. Thanks for indulging me!
Good one! It was certainly an unexpected cover when it was released, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Johnny Cash version had overshadowed the original in terms of audience familiarity. I'm also fond of Nine Inch Nails' cover of Queen's "Get Down Make Love", it was a rather niche track for both bands - so much so that despite being a Queen fan, I heard the NIN version first.
I did Startpage, then self-hosted searx for a while, then switched back to Startpage, and recently subscribed to Kagi, which I very much enjoy. I do not mind paying a provider for search built with the user in mind rather than their advertisers.
There's a Firefox addon called "Add custom search engine" which will allow you to add a local instance of searx.
You'll want to give it the full search query, with %s where the search string goes. for you, it'll be something like:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/search?q=%s
Comic Code has ligatures, but it's not free. Still $30 well spent for me. https://tosche.net/fonts/comic-code

Frankie and Benjy?
a band called Genesis.
Man, this made me feel old, and also I had to laugh. Yeah, little band called Genesis. 😂
When I was young Genesis was everywhere. You couldn't listen to the radio for more than 30 minutes without hearing a Genesis song. Since you seem to not know of them, allow me to introduce you: Phil Collins (vocals/drums), Mike Rutherford (bass/guitar), and Tony Banks (keyboards) is the lineup that most people know. They were the three left over after Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel left the band in the 1970s. In the 70s, they were a prog-rock band, but in the 80s the three remaining members shifted from prog-rock to pop, and the rest is history.
I adore their old stuff, and there is so much to potentially introduce you to, but let's go with this performance of Abacab from '87. The song was released in 1981, and is still in their 'transition' period from a prog band to a pop band. They were absolute powerhouses onstage. Phil Collins in particular is an incredible performer. This song sounds like the 1980s squeezed into pure music, but really, Genesis didn't sound like 80s pop music. 80s pop music sounded like Genesis. Have a listen.
"How do you sleep at night? You obviously don't own a My Pillow."
Wow, that was cringe.
