And on top of this, the removals were done following the request from a troll account, by a user involved in far more questionable discussions than the legal discussions currently going on in the now-removed communities. Should no attempt be made to differentiate between a legit legal concern and trolling?

no seek bar

I really don't understand who thought that removing the seek bar from a video player was a good idea...

Now, Google is bringing in Manifest V3, a new version of Chromium.

If this is the level of their understanding, it's hard to trust anything this outlet publishes.

They only do it because it works. Had they been given the level of attention—and interaction—that trolls deserve, they would quickly move on to doing other things with their life. But as long as one single well-placed comment can result in so many people getting annoyed from so many different perspectives, it's easy to see the appeal that these trolls see...

The communities I'm talking about were dedicated to video. If you didn't like such videos, you'd never subscribe to them. I'm not talking about videos posted to otherwise text-based communities.

The architectures are named after scientists. This one is for the mathematician David Blackwell.

What even is the point of this change?! What could it possibly improve?

If you need earbuds, http://www.scarbir.com/ does similar.

This guy is gold! I've bought a few pairs of cheap headphones after reading his comparisons and reviews, and all have been spot on! He tests on both iPhone and Android, and he explains the differences in sound quality if very approachable and concise ways. When I need headphones again, his site is my no 1 stop.

I doubt it's not carefully worded in corporate speak. It's much more likely just The Guardian's sensationalism. Amazon have an army of HR people; they wouldn't make such basic mistakes.

The Edge 20 series isn't on the list and it's only about 2 years old...

This is all anecdotal, so take it as you will. At some point in the past I used to be careful to do 80–20, or even 70–30 when possible. It was usually a pain, because I didn't get the full benefit of the battery, and I was always worried I might go above or below my targets. I still had to replace a battery after 2 years.

Then, with my previous phone, I decided not to worry about that and just charge whenever. The vast majority of the time I charged to 100% using fast charge, albeit not overnight. I had that phone for 4 years and it was only in the last year that I felt the battery had got worse. That last year was also after a big software update.

With my current phone, I'm doing 80–20 again—but more often 85–35—without fast charging. A year and half in and the battery has definitely degraded. I have easy access to a charger most of the time, and I use a software feature on the phone to limit charging to 85%, so my current schedule is easy to keep to, but if it wasn't, it probably wouldn't be worth it for me. I'd just accept that, worst case, I have to buy a $50 battery every couple of years to not have to worry about charge levels.

There is a way to enable arbitrary add-ons to work on Firefox for Android, but you have to do a few extra steps: register a Firefox account, create a collection of extensions, then add that collection to your phone. I can tell you that Conset-o-Matic definitely works if you take this route.

Seriously, this bot is great. It's one of my favourite parts of finding news through Lemmy, just like it used to be on the old site.

I only tried it on desktop. There's a tiny progress bar at the bottom, but you can't interact with it.

Sure, I get that. The issue is that as soon as you introduce the ability to install apps from outside the App Store, it becomes possible to trick unsuspecting users into clicking buttons they don't understand. By designing a web page to look like an actual Apple page, a malicious party could convince users to "opt in" to outside sources, in a similar way in which phishing websites harvest users' online banking credentials. Currently, this kind of attack is entirely impossible on iPhone.

Yeah, I see it. Horrible for the users though...

I think it refers to an MMORPG related to the Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West games.

ITT: People that don't know the difference between privacy and security.

That's also the only one I know of, and unfortunately there's only a post every other day.

Do you know if hardware decode of 4K HEVC works on the Orange Pi 5?

Do navigation gestures still work if you use a third party launcher? There was a time when it broke the animations and the gestures became clunky.

On malware being distributed through alternate stores, yes. For example:

The real user benefit will be very small

This is just my gut feeling. It is based on not knowing anyone IRL that has willingly installed an Android app from outside the Play Store, but actually knowing people that avoid it because of the potential security implications.

You have to remember that the vast majority of smartphone users are not power users, and not the people who hang out on these forums. While something may look attractive in small circles like these, there are many other factors to consider when targetting the entire userbase.

Here is a script to easily install WireGuard and generate client config files for any server: https://github.com/Nyr/wireguard-install

KeepassXC is for desktop, while DX is for Android.

A moderator of a big community. And the quality of the comments, or lack thereof, is just as important.

I would take the parent poster’s experience as definitely anecdotal/coincidental. A lot of factors can cause a battery to degrade faster, beyond just faster charging or doing full charge cycles.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at. Personally, I've concluded that there are too many factors outside of my control to warrant worrying about it too much.

I wish it was as easy as just buy $50 battery. But with a waterproof phone I don’t think waterproofing will be ip68 when I replace the battery

@plotting_homelab@lemmy.world fair enough. I've never made use of the waterproofing features on any phone I've owned. I think my previous ones didn't even have any to being with...

RIP in pieces ⚰

Here are some alternatives you can try.

I used Standard Notes selfosted for a while, but, like many others, I've given up due to frequent issues. I've been trying Notesnook since and it more than does the job for me. A selfosted version should also be coming soon.

Tailscale doesn’t require you to wrestle with certs or the networking setup required to do NAT traversal. And they do it well, you don’t have to wonder whether you’ve screwed something up that’s degrading NAT traversal only in certain conditions. It just works. That said, I’ve been through the wringer already on these topics so Headscale is not painful for me.

Does Headscale require additional work to deal with NAT traversal on clients? Or is it just for the controller node itself?

Eternity is excellent! I didn't like it at first because it seemed cluttered, but after using it for a while, it's become my favourite Android client!

On Android, Glider is a nice client.

I did read it and, just like your reply, it doesn't answer my question.

What I'm asking about is a special case that is not directly addressed in the article. If the carrier supports eSIMs, i.e. you can buy one from them directly instead of a physical SIM, then maybe this transfer tool will work, with the disclaimer that it may not work in some cases. But if the carrier only offers physical SIMs, there is no information whether this new Pixel feature will let you create a usable eSIM.

I've had bad experience with FocalBoard. Several times it lost data for no apparent reason, including during updates. Eventually I decided to stop using it because it was too fragile.

How do you find videos that fit a specific category, like "What Could Go Wrong"?

Is it a local-only client, or does it download email on their cloud servers first?

IMO these are exactly the kinds of reasons why you might switch to something else. Audio quality is "good enough" everywhere, but Spotify seems the most apt of the streaming service at worsening their UI with each update.

Can you use the conversion tool on networks that don't offer eSIMs directly? There are still many networks, especially smaller or cheaper ones, that only offer physical SIMs.

Do you know the Hagezi lists compare to oisd.nl? The latter have also been great for me, with no false positive that I can remember.

Thanks! I'll try out the lists when I get the chance :)
