Oh, just now? Christ almighty were fucking stupid

No, you're a fool if you truly believe this. Every generation has had some form of this feeling. Imagine considering having children during WW1, or WW2, or during Vietnam or Korea? Then after that we had McCarthyism and the Cold War - all seemingly hopeless days. Yet there is still so much beauty in the world, and there is so much that makes life worth living.

My son will turn 2 in a few months. It's tough being a parent, but it is entirely worth it. You cannot give into myopia - every time I hear him laugh, I am reminded that there is good in the world and it is worth fighting for. He will have his own challenges to face in life, but it is our job as a society to equip him, and all of the next generation, with the tools they need to succeed.

I'm troubled about the future, but you cannot make that stop you from striving for better days. As Marcus Aurelius said, never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.

I've been re-reading the Lord of the Rings lately, and there is a lot there on this topic, but I always think back to Sam. We all should be so lucky to have a friend like that, but what he says when all hope seems to be lost is truly striking:

"It's like the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. I know now folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."

Tolkien wrote this after his experiences fighting in The Somme. If he could find hope and found the courage to keep striving for better days, then so should we.

To put this in perspective, they lost an average of $2B per month in value. According to HUD, there were about 582,000 homeless people in the US last year. $2B per month is enough to house all of them nearly 4 times over if you assume $1k per month in housing expenses.

What a monumental waste of resources that could have made a difference. Musk just sucks

If only we could have this conversation happen then:

Chapter and verse! I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I’m interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She’s a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, and always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it okay to call the police? Here’s one that’s really important, ‘cause we’ve got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean: Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother, John, for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing, while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits.

The answer is massive government support. The cost of those stations has to be insane...imagine the inventory holding cost of those batteries

Except it was the GOP that did their rendition of the Beer Hall Putsch last time they lost...so fuck right off with that shit

Clearly you've never worked with the homeless...it's not the "look of poverty" as you alluded, it's really more about active drug use or untreated mental health disorders.

Some people certainly fall on hard times, but many have serious mental health disorders that for a variety of reasons they are not managing. We often require an address and lots of paperwork to provide government benefits in the US, so it isn't hard for people to fall out of the system.

Once that happens, it's really hard to find your way back. There are certainly not enough programs to help people reintegrate with society. At the same time, a homeless encampment in a neighborhood is not a reasonable solution either.

I volunteered nearly every week feeding the food and housing insecure in Philly for nearly 3 years pre-covid (I moved shortly before Covid). It was a great experience and I got to know many people that I might have otherwise walked past, and it really underscored the value of social services and lack of help available.

It also taught me that people need to be in a place to accept help. The ones that were not in that place are the ones you worry about - they have nothing to lose. Most that came to the church to be served lunch (usually 100-200) were to an extent willing to receive help. Some had bad days or would relapse into drug use, but they were generally trying to do better.

But there were other, much darker, places in the city that people unwilling or unable to accept help went. Places like Kensington in North Philly. That was a huge problem for years...it was a huge open air drug market that basically occupied that area. Finally, I think just this year, police cleared the encampments there.

It's not a great solution, but it also wasn't tenable. My point is that you should understand that not all housing insecure populations are just good people that bad things happened to. Those not in a place to get help or actively using drugs can be dangerous. I certainly would not let my son near that group, nor would I gleefully accept an encampment near my house

Tug the foreskin? Lol

No, it's more like 3-400. The key point here is not the range, but the charging time

As a parent, we still do laundry once per week. Usually 2-3 loads. OP is insane for doing daily laundry...it's a huge waste of water

Look at their 10Q. The majority of their loss was from revaluation of derivative liabilities. If anyone with more Equity Research experience cares to look at p. 14 and care to explain further.

It seems like bullshit to me

X has gotten so bad...any comments section it seems is full of troll farm accounts for Republican fascist ideology. Lately there have been a bunch of memes about how J6 was just a left wing hoax to make Republicans look bad. It's insane, I watched J6 unfold in disbelief on like 3 live news channels- the fact that they are claiming this is just demonstrably false. Free speech is not protected if it is hate speech, or if it is libelous, and most pertinent - if it is posted on a private company's forum, so misinformation should be labeled as such or removed. Trump has proven a lack of critical thinking skills is another pandemic in this country and they cannot be allowed to return to power.

Right, that's the most idiotic part. My wife has a career that I also make sacrifices for and vice versa. Even with modest career growth, she will contribute about $4M in earnings over 30 years.

Setting earnings aside, we have a child, and she is an equal partner. It would be insulting and foolish to ask her to stop working. We want our son to grow up knowing that women are just as capable as men.

Do you honestly think Trump would even try to negotiate a ceasefire?

I seriously doubt that communities marginalized by the justice system would ever take claims of unfair prosecution seriously from possibly the most privileged white guy ever...

No, that's not what is driving this at all. The replacement cost of a vehicle has increased significantly. That's the root cause.

Did anyone think the racist, white supremacy party was going to go for him?

It matters a lot if you're not in a situation to raise a child. It matters a lot if you're forced to carry a child to term that is already dead or will die at birth. It matters a lot if you were raped and got pregnant.

Body autonomy is an economic issue. It should have been codified into law, but decades of legal precedent seemed sufficient until the Supreme Court was packed with zealots.

The vast majority of the country supports this, if a politician doesn't they should be raked over the coals for it.

That's an oddly specific whataboutism. Your premise is bullshit. More education, especially in trades which CC specialize in, is a huge benefit that improves employment outcomes. A better educated workforce also attracts employers. The classic econometrics formula (actually documented in textbooks written by Dr. Jeffrey Woolrich at MSU) is literally: Salary = Education + Ability. Education has a clear positive impact, ability is much harder to measure

In fact it could upskill nearly half the state: https://www.statista.com/statistics/588922/educational-attainment-michigan/#:~:text=Educational%20attainment%20in%20Michigan%202021&text=In%202021%2C%20about%2019.2%20percent,their%20highest%20level%20of%20education.

Fuck off, a book like this will have zero adverse effects on children. I would say acceptance of others is a basic skill

You generally have to graduate high school or complete the GED to be eligible for enrollment in higher education. This has nothing to do with ability, it's just the minimum for entry

They know federal law supercedes state law, right?

Why do we already know that? The democrats, unlike Republicans, generally crack down on stuff like this pretty quickly. I mean look at Gov Cuomo or Al Franken.

I love John Fetterman, but he did have a mild stroke and spent a month in treatment for depression while in office. He's great, but I don't think he is President material. I don't hold either of those things against him, and mental health is important, but no way do you convince the public that all is fine

Trump isn't exactly a spring chicken either. He now has a half a billion dollars in judgements that he owes in addition to being within 4 years of Biden's age. The issue is the double standard and blatant disregard for the fact that he has numerous conflicts of interest that should disqualify Trump

Go fuck yourself with that shit. Our governor is just fine thanks

It isn't a slang term, you dunce. It is the medical term that a doctor would file. The point is that abortion is a normal part of Healthcare and the obsession over politicians getting between a woman and her doctor is dangerous.

Pregnancy is the most dangerous part of a woman's life. In fact, just over half of women who attained an abortion had previously had a live birth. Overturning Roe v Wade just resulted in more women traveling during a vulnerable time in their life. It's not anyone's business what a woman does with her body - 98.5% of pregnancies are carried to term, so all of this is over less than 2% of the population
