It's a very insidious way to make the country more like Russia, where there's so much propaganda there is no objective truth, words have no meaning, and rule of law of even more nebulous.

The dumb part is that your vote only matters if you live in certain places. Trump and Bush should never have become Presidents in the first place.

If you're a Republican in rural California, it doesn't matter. Nor if you're a young Gem Z Democrat in California who voted after your favorite candidate was already guaranteed. Your vote doesn't help offset a vote in Alabama or Wyoming or whatever for the opposite candidate. Your vote would matter more if you moved to a red or purple state.

We can pretend it's democratic, but for "the land of the free" always talking about trying to spread democracy everywhere, the US is actually a pretty sucky and underwhelming system.

I thought this was a really well written article actually. Conservatives know what they're doing, they don't need to hear this. They don't care, they just want their religion to be law, and the first amendment to be abolished. Other people need to know what the conservatives are doing so we can fight back against it or at least know they're arguing in court in bad faith.

On the other hand, that is within a human lifetime and they're still expanding their settlements today. It's not like the bad stuff just happened to people 75 years ago then stopped.

But I wish Israel didn't help create Hamas. It would be much preferable for a more secular force to help Palestinians that I could put my support in. No one wants to support terrorists, but now Hamas is basically their only option, which sucks. I don't even like reading about the stuff over there now, it's all sad and there's no good solution.

I was with you until about here. I've seen cops shoo away people in need rather than even deign to give directions. I would say the majority I've seen have been very unhelpful and the encounters that have been nice or cordial have been the extreme minority. It's like their default is power trip mode.

I mean, they kind of left Gaza. They still send soldiers in there all the time, they still control most of its borders, it's water, electricity, trash, etc, and they cut those things off all the time. It's basically an open air prison.

Also, Israel has killed off all higher Hamas members before so that won't work. And Bibi supported Hamas to prevent a two state solution before so doubt he wants them united under one government. He just wants to do a genocide now, let's be honest.

As for possible solutions, there's too much emnity between Israel and Palestine, there probably needs to be a third party at this point, even though one caused the problem in the first place lol. Someone that's not the US or UK, since Israel is basically their puppet state and the UK caused the initial issues, and not one of the anti-Israel states like Iran. Or maybe it needs to be formed from both groups so that both points of view are represented? Idk. A solution is definitely the hardest part for sure.

It's really sad that we have to rely on the EU for any sort of consumer advocacy against Big Tech. They've had successes with privacy, charger standardization, and maybe they'll work on right to repair laws next. The US just rolls over to them. Lick more boots US government and courts.

Tbh, I've thought about it, who hasn't. But don't think I have the money to run a campaign. It should be illegal to use your own funds to campaign, let people just use an amount of public funds for the purpose and that's it, we all get the same "free speech" instead of some having more "free speech" than others depending on their wallet size. The most trolls came from those two instances since they have no criteria to joining and they have so many users, and beehaw prides itself on being a nice, safe space. Lemmy currently doesn't have the moderating tools to empower them to take care of all the new, toxic redditors, but they said they're willing to federate with them when it does, which I'm sure it will eventually.

I only have the same issue with Mastadon that I do with Lemmy, I have no idea what instance to join. This one I'm apart of now for Lemmy I randomly joined when the admin said he'd accept reddit refugees who wanted to try out Lemmy.

If anyone has any suggestions for good instances to pick I'd give Mastadon a try. Otherwise, it's a nightmare for people like me (who's been compared to Chidi from The Good Place in terms of my overthinking and decision making).
