Personally, I like that the individual posts and comments have up/down votes. That allows the community to self moderate to some extent. That lightens the load on moderators to police bad content, while simultaneously promoting good content. It also means that the community rules do not need to be so heavy handed as to suppress dialog - take /r/conservative as an example.
But I do not believe that those votes should carry over to any kind of metric that affects users or communities in other ways. Perhaps a hidden metric available for moderators is useful for identifying problematic posters. But any kind of publicly visible metrics turn into some obnoxious internet point scoring game that invites shitposters and spammers and bot farmers.

I've had a suspicion for a few years about this phenomenon. I know that simply recording audio and transmitting it for processing to serve ads is a violation of the federal wiretapping laws. I know they know it too.
So do they get around it by doing the processing locally on the device? So the phone effectively has tens of thousands of wake words that are trained for different things. "I want a big truck" -> phone parses that out "big" "truck" and sends those words up to google in a keyword dump. So technically it isnt wiretapping. Right?
Plus, it avoids the security researchers who use wireshark to monitor those devices. They are looking for audio streams, not a keyword dump that is encrypted and can be sent asynchronously at a later date in a much smaller file size.

Like I said - it is virtue signalling. Just because there may not be a causal relationship does not mean that their is no relationship. Nor does it excuse bad virtues.

10kWh is enough to run one 110VAC outlet at full capacity for about 10 hours. I don't know where that 10kWh figure comes from but most American houses use between 15-30kWh per day.
So that 10 foot cube would need to be closer to 15ft cubed. It's huge. Perhaps the foundation of the structure would work, as someone else mentioned.
Not trying to be a dick here, but do you honestly think that you, a non-expert who likely doesn't even practice in ecology or environmental sciences, are the authority here on whether any studies have attempted to account for the water consumption based on the feed variety and sources?
Because if you thought of it as a way to shoot down a random internet comment, then the experts who work in the field have certainly done so and followed through with those calculations already. Have you ever met a professor? They fucking love to tear apart arguments because it gets their names into publications and that's how they earn tenure and notoriety for grant funding.
Maybe it has to come down to gold. The servers cost money to run, and people come here to share. So those who share get gold and those who do not must purchase gold. It may even be that the amount of page views per some unit of time must be paid for with gold, whether gifted or purchased.
I am afraid that the fediverse will be taken over my moneyed interests who can afford to run the servers indefinitely and promote content that no one wants. This would at least allow the user driven servers to survive.
Then instead of using up/down votes, we could use flags. Flags for "Funny", "Insightful", etc, and one of those flags could be "Gild" that must be purchaseable. Those flags could be used in a similar manner to up/down votes, but with more granularity. Certain communities could automatically sort by "Helpful" or "Funny" based on their desires. Communities could even create their own custom flags.
I think karma was used as a way to indirectly help their promotions. High karma accounts would have higher prominence on big subreddits, so their posts were more visible and thus more profitable. Reddit (company) wanted big communities, so the problem was a non-problem to them because it drove fake engagement and made their metrics look more valuable from a sales perspective.
I'd be all for it, personally. But humans are innately tribal. "That person is different - I don't recognize them - I don't trust them."
Cab companies can afford to hire a dedicated mechanic to handle those kinds of problems. That makes even more sense when you consider they purchase mostly similar models over the years. An individual finding a transmission problem will take it to somewhere that is likely inexperienced with those problems and they get overcharged as a result.
The user interface to display what is granted by using the app is... so sanitary. It disguises the ultimate goal of these insidious apps in such a clean and sterile list that it really seems innocuous. I wish that A$pple would start to display an intensity of how much data is collected by these apps. Green for good, red for bad, gradient for in-between. Or something... I suppose that accessibility for colorblind is important oto. Then it would be a bit more obvious to users when an app is really out to get them vs trying to improve performance.
