But if they get the $18/hr, there's no need to tip, right? Right?

I've never subscribed to any of these things, due to multiple reasons like being broke, because I knew I'd never remember to cancel it if I quit using the service, hating subscriptions, realizing most of these collapse almost as fast as they skyrocket, among many other reasons. I know I'm a pessimist.

But it's time to put my money where my mouth is, even if I just want a Reddit alternative. I'm old and grumpy enough to be sick of companies using people the way they do, and since I can't code, I can pay.

If you've read this far, I implore you to really sit down and think about what this project means to you, what it could mean to you, and what it's worth to you. Everyone does the whole coffee analogy - give up coffee for a day and you can support X. But as a Reddit refugee, I think that if I was willing to give Reddit a couple bucks a month to an app for their API access, why on earth wouldn't I do the same here (even before all of Reddit's recent BS)?

You can either pay or be the product being sold.

But hey, at least we also get connection issues when compared to cable.

On one side you have people that think 5g causes cancer. On the other, you have people directly beaming shit into their skulls to open their cars from a couple extra feet away.

Probably bots. Reddit has been using them for some time, but recently got caught using chat gpt or something similar to argue against the blackouts.

It might help to explain what it is if you want people to use it.

Whatever I can hack and be a god. I have enough stress and challenge at work, I just want to come home and smite.

I'm about 40 and have used them as demos for some time. There are a ton of games I've ended up buying that I never would've due to piracy. Maybe I'm all alone, but when finances are tight, I QUIT pirating games so I won't find another I love.

Also I'm firmly in the "I bought it, so I should own it camp." I have quite a few games that I'll buy, but still use the pirated version because it doesn't need the internet, or need to spend an hour updating every time I want to play.

That's you assuming they show you what YOU want and not what THEY want you to see.

Apparently most of my requirements/desires fit this. I require an unlocked bootloader, because I need root to not throw my phone through a window. An amazing camera would be needed as well.

I REALLY, REALLY would like a removable battery, IR blaster, small form function, a headphone jack, and a rear fingerprint reader.

At this point I think it's just giving people ideas

So far I have no problems with 99% of what everyone else seems to have. It's not super intuitive to sign up and figure out all the instances/sites, but it wasn't THAT hard and I'm not planning on signing up too often. Finding new subreddits (for lack of the terminology knowledge) really needs to be improved - it took me well over a day to figure it out (but admittedly I was only using jerboa).

The only things that bug me are some missing quality of life features my 3P Reddit app had, like automatically making as read when scrolling past and being able to quickly hide/dismiss seen content. I'm not used to seeing the same articles over and over. Also, and it's pretty dumb, but being able to double tap for up vote and triple tap for down vote. Don't need it, just drive myself crazy since it's so ingrained.

The only other "complaint" I have is simply the amount of content. I was subscribed to quite a few niche subreddits that fit my interests/humor well, and those obviously haven't migrated over. The YEARS of help in computer subreddits or whatever isn't here. There's no crazy specific subreddit to discover with tons of content.

With all of that being said, I currently have zero plans or desire to go back to Reddit, and it really hasn't been all that hard so far. I swapped out my homescreen shortcut on my phone and I've been enjoying my time so far. I'm desperately hoping that this doesn't die out in a couple days/weeks/months because it's good to have competition, Reddit is effectively dead to what I need it to be, and I have zero desire to give Reddit any money after their views on us came out (to name a few reasons of many).

I also hope the toxicity stays away, but I'm not that naive.

What happened to Cinemax?

I sort by hot and have seen the same posts 3 days in a row. I've actually had to completely switch to new to see anything outside of the same posts I've seen for days.

Apparently nearly everything I look for in a phone. Others have said IR blaster, side squeeze, notification light, and pop-up front camera, all of which were amazing.

I'd add an unlocked bootloader (I bought it, it's my phone to do what I want with), removable battery (hello instant charging), and a small form factor (so sick of needing two hands to do anything).

I actually sat down a coworker years ago and did this. It was surprisingly easy once I realized something - I'll sit down and watch a lot of movies on TV, but there are a few I refuse to. Too many commercials and edits just make me furious... those are my favorites. Getting down to 10 was hard enough, so top 5 are in no order. Some changed how I thought about things, some just entertained me for years:

The Matrix

Interstellar

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Fight Club

Schindler's List

And because it was so hard, here are a few more that just as easily could be top 5:

Silence of the Lambs, Inception, V for Vendetta, OG Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy, Kung Pow, Blair Witch Project

Edit: Forgot one - Arrival. Probably in top 5, no idea which to demote. Fight Club maybe

After reading that post, I'm actually pretty glad they're leaving.

I do as well, but then I remember the insane amount of money and man power it takes to keep things working well (like airplanes, subs, etc) and realize exactly zero people would realistically do that. So it's great in theory, but really, really far off from being something I'd trust.

I seem to be like most and while I've tried tons, I've always stuck with Nova (at least since I switched from Apex).

My main sticking point and the reason it'll be a long time before I switch? I NEED to be able to assign up/down swipes on icons. Tap opens app/folder, up swipe opens another app/folder, down swipe opens another app/folder.

At this point my homescreen has 6 icons and within 2 touches I can get to any of my 500 apps with nearly zero scrolling. If anyone knows another launcher that can do that, I'm all ears.

Hard sell to consider towns of 20k and 10k people are cities. I grew up in rural Midwest with higher population densities than that.

Holy hell, this is still a thing and isn't out yet? I remember hearing about this years ago.

God, just be around teenagers. You'll have an endless supply.

I mean none of the others even come close to this. And that's without it being all but true.

Doom 2016 - remake of a classic that everyone loved, with the soundtrack being a very large part of it.

Growing up our male dogs were named after middle linebackers by my grandfather and I - Butkus, LT, Lloyd, Lambert, etc. - as they were Newfies. One of my greatest young successes (in my mind) came when we had a half Newfie, half something else: Polamalu. Wasn't technically a linebacker, but played like one.

Female dogs were named by my grandmother. it was usually some uncommon human name - Cora, Molly, etc.

Man I'm a techie through and through and have been so excited for some true innovation in phones.

But there's NO way I'm paying close to $2k for a phone. That's the shittiest cost-benefit ratio I've seen in a long time.

Moonfall. So where to start...

It was a big budget action flick, with sci-fi mixed in. Now don't get me wrong, I can suspend my disbelief just fine - you want to tell me that a zombie can rip a mountain in two, so be it. But the scientist in me just couldn't get past a couple things. It's an absolute blast of a movie, with great visuals. Mild spoilers below.

They successfully hide from gravity behind a concrete barrier. A space shuttle launches from the ground through a tsunami (literally in the water). Just absolutely bonkers. But so, so fun.

I was getting ready to tell you how amazing 3 was (first I played), how I can barely remember 4, thought 5 was pretty good, and something about 6 - then I realized I don't remember 6 at all. Zero idea. Maybe I played it and it ran in with 5?

What does it break? I've always had a rooted phone and outside of Google pay, have never had anything not work.

Fixing safetynet is just another magisk module (or two, it's been so long I don't remember anymore).

For what it's worth, fixing safetynet is like a module or two and a couple reboots.

With all of the animations of how it imploded, those pieces sure look intact comparatively.

I've never had a phone that hasn't been rooted and also have always been able to use every app. Google pay might get pissy occasionally, but every banking app has always worked.

Absolutely detest them. I still consistently play old games because they're a blast and make me remember when I was a kid. That won't happen for my kids with their games, as the servers will be long gone and close to zero companies are going to spend more time updating the game to not need a server. I'm an old man yelling at my lawn, but games went from trying to entertain to trying to suck every cent they can out of you.

One of my biggest enjoyments is hacking games up as well. You can learn about coding (set ammo to -1 - is it unlimited, 0, or game crashing). Sometimes it's fun to be a god after a stressful day. Sometimes my kids play with me and I don't want to have to tell them no, worry about them dying every couple seconds and getting frustrated, or having to drop it altogether.

I just want to buy a damn game and play it how it entertains me the most - not have to deal with server errors, not have to deal with 12 year olds screaming, not have to deal with people who have far more time than I do being 1000x better.

Everything I've read says that newer engines (like last decade or two) only need a couple seconds. All the warming up for a minute plus advice was literally from carburator-era engines. Newer engines will be damaged from running cold far more than anything else, so it's best to give them a second or two and then drive to get them warmed faster. That DOESN'T mean to push the engine or red line it, but easy driving.

But I'm not a mechanic, just a super type-A scientist that looks into things at a semi-ridiculous level for the sheer joy of knowledge.

I'm assuming you mean top vs bottom vs sides? Top is bigger because it has the camera and sensors. Everyone would complain about bezels (and did) of the sides were smaller for zero reason other than being the same size all around.

In which Reddit will eject the mods and turn them back on
