It's so strange how the press covers Nikki Haley like she actually matters.

For the curious, this is factual, not just true. Source: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/homeless-man-vs-corporate-thief/
Next you're going to tell me you can solve homelessness by giving people housing
Weird shot at the Arch wiki, which is truly great. I turn to it regularly despite not using Arch.
Someone's gotta say it: Trump getting elected
If you want to learn more about it than is frankly reasonable, Jamie Loftus recorded a detailed history including an interview with Naomi H.
The ToS forbids satirical reviews. I'd start a review by reading out this portion of the ToS and then make a list of things I hate, just saying I'm not allowed to talk about this aspect of the game, or this aspect of the game, etc, etc.
Divested from Israel. The answer is that they should have divested from Israel.
$375 million in today's dollars would cover (adjusted for inflation) the marketing and development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_video_games_to_develop
Imagine getting 80% of the vote in an unopposed election, in a massively important state, and completely ignoring the explicit reason why. If Biden loses Michigan it will 100% be his fault.
Here, I drew the word "Just" in this post

I will likely never get a tattoo. But I know there are lots of reasons to get tattoos, and it seems to me that the vast majority of people not only don't regret but feel good about the tattoos they get. So I dunno, sleep on it, but go ahead and get a tattoo if you really want.
The title should be "Influencer dies after contracting cholera-like disease and refusing medical help."
Playing video games isn't optimal, but it is better than spending two hours teaching yourself that bed isn't the place you sleep. If you don't fall asleep in ~30 minutes (or feel like you won't fall asleep) get up and read something, and try again in an hour or so.
I got so much concern trolling for saying Biden was bad and should step down. People accused me of wanting fascism. They insisted I was naive and we should be standing behind Biden.
I just want to say to those people: you were wrong. Dumping Biden has wildly hurt Trump's chances, and you were the ones arguing against it.
She should be bankrolled by the state for the grievous harm it did to her, but she'll probably get nothing.
Reminder: Hamas does not have a presence in the West Bank. Mass killings of Palestinians have never been about containing or defeating Hamas. The killing, destruction of property/seizure of land, and creation of fear are the point.
Good thing we decided to beef up our pandemic response infrastructure in case this happens, right? Right?
[Edit: upon reflection, this post went too far. To any who saw it, I apologize.]
The channel is Programmer Humor, not Programming Humor
shaun did an excellent video on exactly this. TL;DW: stereotype threat & harassment.
Oooooooh I tell you if you keep committing genocide I'm gonna get frustrated! Reeaaal frustrated!
My guess is that it's related to the Weber-Fechner laws of perception. This is the same principle that explains why turning a second light on doesn't make a room seem twice as bright. Fechner's formulation is "the intensity of our sensation increases as the logarithm of an increase in energy rather than as rapidly as the increase."
What exactly do you expect Canada to do to help fix our electoral problems?
The cool thing is that even if the penalty isn't a fine, there's a good chance you can plea bargain your way back down to a fine
You are perpetuating the harmful and false stereotype that mentally ill people are more violent than mentally healthy people. Mentally ill people are more likely to be on the receiving end of violence from mentally healthy people than the other way around.
Bringing a gun into a situation is antithetical to deescalation. The presence of a gun means the stakes have now escalated to life and death. It doesn't matter how "well trained", sensible, or humane the person with the gun is; the situation is now escalated and thus much more volatile.
They do have a point. She hasn't even been a game show host!
This is a specific (and probably the most well-known) case, but for details about how the Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index is calculated, you can hit https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption and look under the header "Energy consumption model and key assumptions". There is a summary and a link to a paper detailing their methods. Skepticism about science reporting is super important! And I'm certainly willing to have my mind changed, but it looks like there's a lot of substance to these claims.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do learn from history are doomed to watch as those who did not learn repeat it.
Headline has real "you want to improve society yet you participate in it" vibes
The gadsden flag but the snake is being tread on and says "one day I'll own this boot"
In March, the former president won enough primary races to secure the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.
However, according to a survey of 1,003 Americans by Canadian polling firm Leger, Trump does not command the full support of his base and 33 percent of this demographic would have preferred another politician.
Another way of writing that 33 percent prefer another politician is that 67 percent prefer Trump. Last I checked, 67 percent support is enough to secure the Republican nomination.
Meanwhile, this proportion is higher (47 percent) among Republican voters aged 18 to 34 years old.
Again, another way of writing this is that 53 percent of Republican voters aged 18 to 34 years old support Trump. I'll double check my arithmetic, but even this seems to be enough to win primaries.
With a title like "One in three Republicans now think Donald Trump was wrong candidate choice," I would expect to see a poll which showed that fewer than "One in three Republicans" used to "think Donald Trump was wrong candidate choice." That seems like a straightforward way to make the point this article is trying to make. Yet none is provided. Instead we are treated to some general electorate polling showing some minor fluctuation and some republicans who were already critical of Trump continuing to be critical of Trump.
The centrist will to make the Republicans look better than they are is so powerful.
My opinion: don't sweat it, either way. I know that's easy to say from the outside, but it's still true. Do what you are most comfortable with. It sounds like you have plenty of ammunition if you want to put your foot down & insist on quality practices. Reject PRs that don't meet best practices, and point to the internal docs you have. If the dev reacts angrily, blame the company & say you are worried about getting in trouble.
Or if confrontation makes you more uncomfortable, just let it slide. If the shit hits the fan, the senior dev is the senior dev. Just say you were following their lead.
Above all, remember that the company you are working for is not your friend and not your ally. Look out for your own interests first & don't stress about work as much as possible (I get that's easy to say and tough to do, but it's still the best idea!)
One thing to note is that Republicans have been talking like this for years. Minion Death Cult (tagline "The World Is Ending. Your Uncle’s Facebook Feed Is Responsible. We’re Documenting it.") have coined "Minion's Law", which is that right-wing comments on a news story will have at least one person calling for civil war.
Does this mean we are at zero risk for a second civil war? Of course not. But finding people online calling for civil war isn't sufficient cause to be worried; there needs to be at least some evidence of mobilization, as there was leading up to January 6th (for instance).
So I searched a few of these names. One of them did run as a democrat, but lost in the primary. Otherwise, so far as I can tell, these are just random black people who are calling themselves democrats. So I'm unsure why this is terribly surprising.
[Edit: should have read the article, one of the people is a Democrat lawmaker]
Ok, but we all should admit: .net is a terrible name.
