Maybe businesses will stop forcing “free” Teams on their workforces now. What a pile of shit.

It’s called the asshole tax. Don’t be an asshole and you won’t be charged.

Nine year redditor here; I never fell into the doomscrolling that so many others talk about, and I will miss Reddit, but something I've discovered is that while it's difficult to get a "toe hold" in the fediverse, once you do, there is way more content here than I ever knew about on Reddit.

Not saying that Reddit didn't have it, but rather that I never got curious enough to poke around beyond my main block of subs that I'd curated over that decade. There are entire domains here devoted to science or philosophy or retro gaming, and it really does look like they're vibrant and active. Finding them is the issue, which really is the big problem with the fediverse in the first place.

There really isn't a great cut-and-switch over to Lemmy that will make a redditor feel like nothing has changed, but the discovery process isn't too much different from Reddit, and I think people need to remember that their Reddit experience wasn't built in a day. My suggestion is to take a more curious approach rather than the "Reddit's dead, what's its identical replacement?" that I see, because there really isn't one and, even if there was, it'd be just as susceptible to the same disease that is currently killing Reddit (and Twitter).

Holy shit that makes my blood boil! If I earned a B you fucking give me a B, marks are not arbitrary and based on your feelings.

We had a teacher like this for my youngest son. Her marking of his work was consistently two letter grades below every other mark he got in all of his subjects. Got the school board involved after having a few other teachers independently grade the same paper she gave him a C on. She is no longer involved in any of his studies.

It’s a compromise; the discussions aren’t lost, Reddit doesn’t get to have the data anymore, but like you said, there’s no engagement. The engagement needs to occur over here with new topics, possibly linking back to the copied old ones.

Pretty much my conclusion. Their writing style is completely off-putting and even if they have good points, I’m not going to endure their attitude to try to get to them anymore.

I’ve been online just at long, if not longer than them, and their “type” is nothing new. Nor is the solution: smiles and wave, boys, smile and wave.

You go to a doc. They’ll usually give you a form to fill out and it’s really a self evaluation. Answer enough questions the “right way” and they’ll take a closer look.

For me, the confirmation of the condition was after taking the new rx for a few days. “Oh, THIS is what a quiet mind is!”

What about the ad blocker changes they’re making? That’s pretty much the line for me. I use chrome everywhere but when ublock stops working well that’ll be me jumping ship. The web is a fucking unreadable cesspool without a solid adblocker running.

Slack is my modern go-to, but I still also use IRC. Slack has great support for technical chat, doesn’t slow my i7 with 32GB RAM to a crawl, has great multiple account support and even voice chat if you are into that. I prefer zoom for video when I need it, but slack’s isn’t nearly as shit as teams.

This. Trying to find anything in a brick and mortar store in the last decade has been such a godawful experience that I don't feel the least bit sorry for them. Groceries are largely delivered (not using Instacart, but the store's own delivery or pickup service), tech stuff is all aliexpress or amazon, clothing I still largely go in to buy, but don't buy very often. Appliances? Research the shit out of it online and usually order online from a local retailer with a decent website. Heck, even hardware is online through Home Depot and auto stuff is either rockauto or similar.

Even if you’re a Discord user it’s still annoying as fuck.

This is missing the part where if I manage to misremember something, it is all but impossible to correct the memory.

Acshually, a solvent. 🙃

Thank you for sharing so much detail. I was diagnosed at 40. Fortunately for me the first drug (concerta) they tried worked really well and it took about 6mos to find the right dosage. Boy is too much readily apparent!

My daughter was diagnosed at 21, and it took a year for her. Same doc, started with same med and she was at double the dose I am at and it just wasn’t working right. Switched her to something else (sorry can’t remember exactly) and this one works WAY better for her.

I will go of it for a few days every month or so just to “reset” (doing this on my own feeling, doc didn’t tell me to do this) because it feels like the dose is just a touch too high but the next dose down is way too low. It’s been quite a game changer for me.

How do you use a phone to detect a laptop in a car? If it’s on, sure I get it but if the laptop is asleep or off I can’t see how a phone will detect it?

I prefer mailing lists to forums, and forums to IRC, Slack to Discord and Discord is dead last just because it’s so fucking annoying. Forums can be annoying too but they are far more usable/searchable than the stream of consciousness, ephemeral nature of chat.

Apparently because they don’t fly…

We aren’t at the point yet — with any self-drive car — where you should be behind the wheel unless you’re absolutely capable of taking over in seconds.

You’re not as familiar with IRC as you think you are if you believe it doesn’t have (sometimes large) servers and it works in a peer-to-peer arrangement with each user contributing to the “power of the network”…

That doesn’t sound right. I’ve got 200,000 miles on my 2015 Passat TDI, and expect another 100,000 easily with minimal repair/maintenance cost.

What’s the service life of the battery of a ten year old EV? The electric motor should be almost indestructible, but I have serious doubts that the battery capacity will still be reasonable after the same amount of time, even if you baby it.

Something I’ve not been asked to get through my head about QE: If observing the entangled particle destroys the entanglement, doesn’t that mean we’d need “containers” of entangled particles to send a bunch of information?

I thought hyperloop literally sucked vehicles through the airtight tunnels. :-)

It’s not about designed to function lifetimes. It’s about product support, and there’s no reason why the electronics can’t be supported the same as “inactive pieces of metal.” We’re not talking about surgery to replace a broken component that’s now unobtanium.

I know I’m an outlier, but I prefer text mode IRC, then slack, and then all the other shit (telegram, signal, discord, teams, etc) fall way behind. “Everything is a walled-off app” is a horrible way to communicate. I get why these companies do it, and I also even understand the headache over maintaining useful open APIs, but honestly, they drop that ASAP because it doesn’t make them money.

It makes a lot of sense to post where the people are. Roll your own and note the people need your app/etc. granted, everyone is reading X on their smartphone and I’m 100% positive that Japan has the same kind of emergency broadcast system that we have in North America, but again that’s not meant for lots of messages, where a social networking site is.

Discord is sooo awful imo. Every server has annoying “rule bots” or people constantly changing the look/feel of the channels or trying to engage you with @all or @channel (which you can ignore but it’s still annoying)… even the more technical ones have the same vibe. IRC is so much easier to communicate in IMO.

Many PDAs, DVD recorder on the computer (never for TV), no to webtv or 3D TV, many rpis (and banana pis and countless other embedded boards)... internet radio player... not as a separate device.

Despite spending my entire life designing and improving tech, I am actually kind of tech-adverse. A good laptop, good phone and good internet connection, and all the gadgets tend to be left behind. Smart home? Yes, but it runs off of HomeAssistant. Alexa? Yes, but only because the non-hive-mind solutions aren't quite there yet. Heck, my oven/range doesn't even have a timer.

edit: 46yo

Mine lasts about 3 days before I have to charge it, but I’m also largely ignoring it and use it as a watch / timer / notification reader. I had one with the cell modem but when I broke it was during the pandemic and just wasn’t on-site where I’d often leave my phone at the desk.

Not during the strike they’re not…

Yep, most of my interactions lately that are non trivial are just sigh-inducing. Smart assistant my ass.

They don’t use cable ICs for basic power use. The IC in the cable (different ICs for different capabilities) is used for high power negotiation (ie the cheap thin cable won’t be able to do 100W, and the lack of chip ensures this safety requirement) and also for active equalization do you can get 40Gbps.

It’s a good thing, and cheap cables don’t need it at all. The system falls back safely.

The cable has to carry the negotiated power safely. It’s not unnecessary, it’s absolutely critical. I’ve personally seen and diagnosed the result of when this fails.

For your low power applications there is no need and the spec allows for that.

I mentioned this in another post, but yes, resistor dividers are useful and have been used for ages. However things like component aging/damage and simply having enough headroom between different options limits the number of discrete states you can convey with a resistor divider.

I’m usually not a fan of overcomplicated solutions, but these identity chips aren’t that.

I got in on a $45 for three months, unlimited everything. So far so good in LA, but I definitely get the “full bars but where’s my bandwidth?” at least once a day. They’ll put me on an unlimited everything for $120/3mos and I’m not sure I’d be happy with the slowdowns at that price.

Everyone’s different. I type 8h+/day on my 2019 (Intel) pro, and if I’m writing text as opposed to code I’m hitting 130wpm consistently and accurately. I’m not a small guy either; it’s hard to find gloves that fit me.

I can’t stand most laptop keyboards and the old butterfly design was awful, but the current gen Mac keyboards are pretty good for me.

“Nothing is perfect” Is a hell of a way to minimize the enormity of the issue. Like wow…

Not OP but I’ve been using duplicity for over a decade. Zero lock-in to any particular cloud storage, uses rdiff and gpg for the incremental computation and encryption… it’s awesome.

Just this month I’ve switched over from S3 to Dropbox for cloud storage due to price, and other than the large first backup, my backup script worked flawlessly.

I can’t recommend it enough.

There’s no way a typical BLDC/ACIM can’t spin at the tire’s RPM. If you’ve got a 16” tire then at 100mph you’re spinning at roughly 1000rpm; these motors typically spin 3.5x that fast.

You can create another Apple ID in the country you need. I am a Canadian in the US and couldn’t change the country of my Apple ID because I have active subscriptions (another idiotic limitation) I created a second ID with a US address and CC. Downloaded US-only apps just fine and didn’t lose my Canada-only ones either.

This is my main point of conflict with shopping strictly on price. I do try to support local when possible. I'm price conscious of course, but community support is also important. Not all (or even many it seems) local businesses do support their communities but when I see it I make a note that they're one of the local B&Ms I will buy from.
