Here is the source blog post from oracle: https://www.oracle.com/news/announcement/blog/keep-linux-open-and-free-2023-07-10/
RedHat really fucked up with this move. I know RedHat employees and everyone from RedHat I met so far was proud they work there and how much open source meant to the company. I guess there will be more and more redhatters looking for new opportunities in the coming months.
Mass exodus maybe in terms of power users. The average Reddit user used the official client before the api restrictions. My guess is that many people who posted good stuff ditched Reddit.
Never meant to defend oracle. I dislike them even more than IBM.
Yeah based on the article SUSE is planning to contribute the Project to an open source foundation, additionally they are going to invest 10+ million dollars. Looking forward to see what open source foundation this is going to.
They have been doing this since March 2020.

He meant it would be irresponsible because his compensation package would suffer. (https://apnews.com/article/shell-ceo-pay-energy-prices-record-profits-3f9b9bb08d1cd88a11d0ab550ffdc053)
Did you read the whole article? It’s about behavioral advertising based on metrics that are not explicitly stated to the user. If the users opt in to this kind of advertising then it’s ok, but Facebook/meta has to get their agreement.
Swartz unfortunately died in 2013.
The reactions you are seeing are based off of Metas history. We will see how it works out.
Some more stuff you can do:
You can subscribe to a community on a different lemmy instance, this community will then be mirrored to your local instance for you to view. The comments will be distributed the same way.
Don't forget about the time wasted on social media or other useless stuff on the internet.
No, they won’t loose all content. I think the quality will just get worse and worse depending on what you view as quality. For the average social media user it probably will be good enough, or it will develop into reposts from other mainstream platforms.
The politicians are paid by the tobacco companies. There is money to be made, and a new generation will replace tobacco smokers and ensure that the tobacco industry will survive for longer.
Nicotine is socially accepted, that is the other main problem.
Sometimes I have to readjust the mirrors during a trip depending on how I sit.
RedHat needs to be profitable, and it's getting harder and harder for them. RHEL is not their main product anymore. Everything is about Openshift and it's Ecosystem. But Openshift is expensive.
Additionally are the European sub divions not happy how the last round of layoffs went.
Well here we are fighting other people like us who just want to be entertained in one way or another. In the mean time another entity is making a profit off all the attention their product is getting through all of this.
Interesting that spez talks about democracy regarding Reddit while he looks like a dictator trying to push his opinion regarding other people making a living, 3rd party App devs are willing to pay a reasonable price that’s justified to use the api. But that’s not enough for spez…
In case you missed it: if you have Lemmy open in the browser, use the share button and Add to Home Screen. Feels and looks like an app that way.
I think it would be better if @marsta@beehaw.org would post the errors so the solution to his problems is documented in case someone else has a similar problem.
This way we could google problems and just add lemmy instead of reddit to find a proper solution.
Humanity can certainly adept to climate change, but these changes will also cause a lot of people to relocate. I’m not sure if society, in the current political climate, can adapt quick enough to be able to deal with the influx of possible climate refugees.
You are right, all these other problems are also really bad. A lot of stuff is happening at the same time. It's hard for me to read about all the shit that is going down and not be able to do anything impactful against these things.
I'm living in a flat, this limits what I can do on my own. But I'm looking into getting some solar panels to put up on the balcony, coupled with a storage battery this should bring down the kW/h I need from an external provider.
In the far future I would like to move out of the city and start producing more of my own food, but prices are just to high right now.
They only mentioned opioids, so there are a ton of other options which can add special effects to your daily life ;)
They don’t even need to scrape it. There is a torrent out there with all the data for the last 10 years or so neatly packaged.
The modlog seems also good on mobile browsers.

After reading up on GDPR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation) it deals with the transfer of personal data to entities outside the EU or EEA for processing. The definition of personal data would be the main point to see if/how GDPR is applicable to lemmy instances. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_data)
Your IP address and EMail address could be classified as personal data from my point of view. But this won't be shared or processed outside of the instance as far as I can tell. If your username and associated posts are classified as personal data I can't say, but there seems no connection of these to your IP or Mail outside the instance. According to this TechDispatch (https://edps.europa.eu/data-protection/our-work/publications/techdispatch/2022-07-26-techdispatch-12022-federated-social-media-platforms_en) the instances still must adhere to GPDR, but as there is not much or no processing of personal data taking place this should pose no issue.
All of this is based on a bit of research, so please enlighten me if I made any mistakes.
Just because most companies do it, doesn’t mean it’s ok.
It’s not about targeted ads based on information provided by the user of the service. If you have read the article you would know that they are banning behavioral advertising.
The vast majority of reddits userbase are consumers. They are already using the official app and don't care about the politics of the platform. These people are only there to get their content fix.
I realised this when I saw a post on a subreddit where someone shared on how to turn off some kind of notification in the official app. So many other people thanked this person... Reddit has become another mainstream social media site like FB, Instagram and so on.
Mostly power users will leave for something else, which in turn leads to worse content on Reddit.
I think every article that gets people to talk about the problems we are collectively facing is doing it‘s job.
For some people this might be the trigger to have a deeper look into the topic, because a more relatable person for them is pointing out a problem.
We need a system to hold those in power responsible for their promises and inactions.
I don’t trust corporations, the only thing important for them is the balance sheet, they will always take the easy and cheap way. There should be a world wide tax on all companies which decreases with the companies sustainability. Hit corporations where it hurts them: money.
But this won’t be shared or processed outside of the instance as far as I can tell.
At least use the whole sentence when quoting to avoid confusion.
Looking through the activityStreams definition it seems only Usernames are shared (https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/#actors), which is already personal Data according to another comment (https://lemmy.world/comment/929906)
I would say if you feel sick call in.
Personally I called in even with a headache or when I wasn’t in the right headspace to work properly. Take care of yourself first.
Depending on how your company handles things of course.
Yeah the convenience and the flavor are the main problems for me. If the prepackaged vapes would come in non candy flavors, a lot of potential new consumers wouldn't touch vapes. They should be an alternative for smokers and not a new revenue stream for tobacco conglomerates based on a new generation who know smoking in general is bad.
If THC vapes are properly vetted and the buyer is informed about possible health impacts I'm totally ok with that.
Yeah there is more content on Reddit or FB/IG, but that doesn't mean, that the content there is useful to users in the fediverse.
Your last comment just didn't add anything to the discussion besides attacking. I can understand where you are coming from, but sometimes things happen and change the way you are looking at things.
Edit: After reading your edit it seems you are angry at the wrong people. At least you have chosen an appropriate username.
I didn't mean to pretend that this will be any different. My hope is, that there will be some people who will see that there is an alternative to big tech and maybe drop Threads in favour of a real fediverse instance.
I agree, there is definitely work to be done regarding compliance.
Yeah my browsing time has gone down compared to Reddit. But Lemmy has far less mindless content, if I’m on here I’m more engaged and actively read articles linked or write comments.
