I know how everyone just wants to pipe up and say, "well it didn't crush me hur hur", but I actually watched the video. It's a good record of what went down. I wish it would've mentioned Reddit alternatives, but it's still solid work.

And to anyone who still maintains that the protest has fatally wounded Reddit, look, I'm on your side but Reddit is still the 800 lb gorilla of link aggregation, and most folks still don't get why they should care about API pricing.

What's that? It's on somebody's property. Someone is paying for power, connectivity, and air conditioning.

Since Poland was restored at the Treaty of Versailles, it has invaded exactly 0 countries. Russia has invaded a few dozen. Including Poland. Twice.

I mean, yeah?

Begin rich makes one feel infallible. Thinking one's self to be infallible leads to these kinds of decisions.

People will do batshit crazy shit if they think God wants them to.

That's so 7 years ago.

I'm conflicted. These direct sales prohibitions are naked efforts to protect a market segment nobody likes. But, on the other hand, Elon.

You know that account you set up 6 years ago and used only as a verification email for a site you almost never go to? Won't you be surprised next time you need to reset your password.

FWIW, this is kinda happening right now, albeit in a sort of "innocent" garage project sort of way. There are mods for Skyrim that take the voice work created by skilled actors, and use it to generate convincing additional dialog that they never consented to nor got paid for. Laura Baily is already seeing herself being AI'd by her own fans.

And this is with homemade software. Wait until the good stuff comes out.

See? This is Lemmy at its finest, where a lack of (displayed) karma encourages people to just be their honest selves!

I dunno. This is the energy that made me finally decide Reddit wasn't for me and work up the drive to give Lemmy a shot. My first 5 minutes here have been great!

Maybe if I'd already seen this post 50 times, I'd get where you are coming from, but for those of us that just got here, this is the energy that made it happen. Be patient while we acclimate.

FWIW, the people staying on Reddit kinda do, or did, impact us. Their apathy means that the community we've been a part of for years is not going to get better. They're why we had to go.

Insightful question. After all, 34.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

If the only people who leave Reddit are the ones who understand what a federated FOSS link aggregator is, I think I'd be cool with that. Lemmy's share of the 3% who have moved on is already pretty impressive, at least in terms of where it was a couple months ago. And the quality of the discourse has been significantly better.

I dunno if Reddit won, but I certainly did.

Let's be honest: GOP primary voters do not care about the outcome of this trial.

Its especially innocuous if you choose the pronoun on the character screen that you're are used to using. Or just leave it at default, which is cis gendered. You have to really go out of your way to make this weird.

Russia is the largest country on the planet, with boundless natural resources. All they need to do is learn how to keep their armies within those massive borders, and they would be everyone's favorite trading partner. Instead, they do ... this. They don't need to die. They just need to go home.

significantly worse than other cities like Atlanta Philly and Baltimore

Wait. Atlanta resident here. There are cities worse than us?

Turning office space into living space is often mentioned in discussions like this. It should be noted that converting the space is not as easy as it seems. In particular, moving the plumbing infrastructure to support individual bathrooms and kitchens is extremely challenging and it makes some projects impracticable.

LinkedIn is feeling like abandonware.

Everyone's judging! I'm pretty sure that's how the platform is designed.

But I get what you're saying. I'm just adding my little joke to grow the content library.

So, are you saying that "reaching across the aisle" and hearing alternative views are bad things? I get avoiding hate speech and excessive negativity but is think a happy medium would be more healthy.

Yeah, I really don't get why people would care much about branding. It's everything leading up to that that's starting to wear people out.

I'm actually willing to accept that Hawley 's masculinity is under threat. I feel pretty good about mine, tho.

Amazing the amount of grief you get for wanting the same thing everyone else does but not being willing to believe every single report that you're finally going to get it.

Neither of those words really need to be in quotes.

There has almost certainly already been a chilling effect from similar laws in Florida. Teachers cannot take chances: If they are fired for cause, they often have to move to another state to remain employable in their profession.

I suppose that depends on your point of view.

I think that which 250k migrated will eventually end up making quite a significant dent. It isn't the technophobic lurkers that make up the Lemmy early adopters.

It hides the true cost of the meal and allows both the employee and the employer to avoid taxes on this part of the "salary"

My Gen Z son says these are Alphas and he doesn't want to be associated with them.

Well, they are Russians. Where else are they going to go. Vladivostok? Arkangel?

"Pcmasterrace" did not start with Reddit.

Given its much smaller user base, it's a lot more likely that a human will see your post before it scrolls off of page 1 on Lemmy. There's a little less futility to posting

Judging by what I saw on my last day on Reddit, he may be right.

And yet, somehow, I feel like the lawyers who took this unwinnable case are going to come out okay.

I mean, if you're being invaded, doesn't anything you do to fight back count as "defense"?
