I jumped into Usenet as an experiment and, once it was setup, it was ok. Although it is definitely not simple to get started and it seems you are constantly having to pay for stuff, even to access the trackers, which don't even have all the content!

I decided I didn't download enough and what I wanted was too hard to find, so I went back to Torrents. Way simpler for my occasional use.

A way to fairly pay the original content creator.

If I really enjoy a movie, series or music, I often actually want to send the actual creator some money to reward their creativity. May be just a dollar, may be ten. But I can't.

Where did everyone go? I thought Lemmy was the new hangout but it still seems so small, even popular posts are only getting a handful of comments?

Arghh, two conflicting replies. What do we do?!!

Why should Spotify waste time on your pet feature request when they have dozens of working features still to be ruined.

The narcissism on so many levels is such an adorable aspect of this every generation

Same thing happened in : 90s with Goths, 80s with New Wave , 70s with gender fluid androgyny, 60s with hippies, 50s with rock and roll... 20s with flapper girls.

Super useful, thanks. Actually made a lot of things click in my head about how Linux works.

When did /home get deprecated? Is /usr/local the replacement?

Sorry for the n00b question (I'm not a noob, but I have been off Linux for a few years), figured the answer may be useful to other users too

Me too. It was the constant popups making me download their app that did it for me.

When I'm compelled to chant "freedom, freedom" in a crowd of proud American conformists, I instead shout "femdom, femdom". It subtly disrupts the harmony of the chant and sows confusion and self-doubt.

Amen. Shame he's jacking it in. But he has been going non-stop for like 10 years

But, in 229 years, will a Trillionaire be classed as Poverty?

Good point. Give a man a free meal, he eats for a day.

Seed fund an industrial unit churning out basic healthy meals and employ an UberEats-type workforce of homeless/disadvantaged people to distribute the meals, all under a non-profit banner, and hundreds of the poorest of society can eat for $2-5 a day.

I agree. The magical feeling of being a student at Hogwarts soon evaporated as soon as you got a broom and didn't really need to visit Hogwarts again and instead just fight endless random enemies, which gets pretty easy as you level up.

I was also disappointed by the endless voice acting. There was so much pointless talking and you couldn't really control the outcome, all options seemed to result in a positive outcome when I just wanted to be a badass Malfoy but you're not allowed, you jave to be a goody goody Hermione, juat in Slytherin clothes.

Irreversible. A French film (alarm bells already) that disturbs me even to this day.

Makes you grateful for your loved ones and how fragile life can be, how one unlucky encounter can flip everything on its head and you may have no influence over any of it.

Difficult viewing for sure and the message shouldn't be to live in fear but to enjoy every good moment you get.

Spanish?

Blues Clues and "Scott's Tots". High IQ required or don't even bother

It's not just Simps. Boomers are very vulnerable to this technology, especially the lonely or widows. For some reason, they can be recklessly trusting of internet relationships/technologies. Hence why they keep getting exploited by Romance and Pig Butchering scams and why they can't get enough Facebook Trump/COVID misinformation.

This is true.

Go and buy a car from a manufacturer who doesn't insist on subscriptions... whilst you still can!

Hay Fever season just around the corner. Better stock up

Just want to say that is a really well reasoned and rational take on a complex situation. Well done.

I wish we had more honest discussion of this quality instead of everyone jumping on one band wagon or another with no real knowledge of the situation beyond a single article.

Thanks, great reply.

I'm not willing to give up just yet. So I'll try a block account from a different provider and see how it fares.

This is the right answer

But what about Bowie? Why his name being dragged through the mud

That makes sense. Thank you so much. That is a question that has caused me issues for a long time. Now I understand it.

What would you recommend instead?

Very well made and researched. Very engaging. My favourite is the Blueprint for Armageddon as it covers more recent history which I personally find more relatable, and therefore more powerful, than the other topics. I would love a WW2 series. His arguement is that it is already very well documented from other sources, but I think Dan could really do it justice. zooming in on a specific part of the conflict would be great.

Are you a morning person because you've just always had that routine? I'm not a morning person, but pretty sure it's because society is designed to keep me awake until late at night and I've just fallen into that cycle. But I'm curious how other people resist it.

What a shame. The previous replies have been deleted. Guess we aren't allowed to discuss difficult problems like adults on Lemmy either.

I'm just trying the scene out, but so far I'm put off by having to pay for both indexers and providers, and now I need multiple of both to get what I thought was basic content (a film about a boy wizard).

Maybe it's a different problem causing my downloads to not even start, but the help page suggests DMCA as likely cause.

Thanks. I did check Trash guides before posting but it doesn't cover installation, much less Linux user naming and groups, unless I missed it.

SILENCIO

Not strictly a podcast, but Mentour Pilot on YouTube does a really good job of this too. Has some great visuals but would work as audio only too.

And killing the last of the dragons and stuff

Lol, No and No.

Why would you pay for a 'beefier' internet connection AND pay for Usenet and then pay even more for a NAS.
I pay for Usenet so precisely so I don't need those things.

Is SpaceX failing?

You're doing just great at shaming yourself to strangers on the internet. Keep it up.

Why? We all know LLMs are just copy and paste of what other people have said online..if it answers "yes" or "no", it hasn't formulated an opinion on the matter and isn't propaganda, it's just parroting whatever it's been trained on, which could be anything and is guaranteed to upset someone with either answer.

Don't know why everyone is shitting on you. You raise a good point. When did piracy become something you pay for?
