All in all, he's believed to have stolen $14 million+. By the way... he's 18, autistic, and enrolled in a special education school.

I'm particularly amused by the pro-NVIDIA "it just works" comments. Compared to what exactly? With AMD, the 3D acceleration driver is bundled directly into VESA, so it's already ready & working before even the first-boot of almost all desktop distros. That's how drivers are supposed to work on Linux and it has taken NVIDIA 10+ years (and counting...) to get with the basic program.

I applaud the long overdue decision to move their proprietary firmware directly onto the card and making the rest of the kernel driver open-source, but I'll remind you folks of a few things:

• The open source driver is still in an alpha with no timeline for a stable release
• NVIDIA has so far elected to control their own driver releases instead of incorporating 3D acceleration support into VESA

NVIDIA had to be dragged screaming to go this far and they're still not up to scratch. There's still plenty of fuel left in the "Fuck NVIDIA" gastank.

There is currently no engagement-based individual curation on Lemmy. The two most commonly used ranking algorithms (Hot & Top) are based strictly on votes. Top sorts by the total number of votes from within a given time window while Hot considers all votes against a steep time-based curve.

Not coincidentally, this is the same algorithm methodology used by Reddit. Two Reddit users subscribed to the exact same communities will see the exact same Hot/Top feeds, regardless of how much or little they individually engage with specific posts. Lemmy intentionally copied this community-based engagement methodology, presumably because it's part of the secret sauce that makes Reddit-like platforms special.

6. Developer documentation has generally improved over time. On SO, asking about a well-documented thing is a short-circuit pathway to getting RTFM'd & discussion locked

I posit that there's something uniquely specific about the direct intersection of service, money, and sexual pleasure which makes prostitution uniquely uncomfortable for (modern western) people to think about. It's not a precedent, it's a playbook and telecos have been following it for decades. If you have one of the big telecoms in your city, they will sue to block municipal broadband. I've gotta say, this doesn't strike me as a particularly substantial issue. In theory, yes. Of course, the same holds true for a lot of things which we currently use clean water for! The water needs of agriculture, toilets, carwashes, and many more could be addressed through so-called graywater (e.g.: pumped lakewater, rooftop rainwater) if we really sat down and wanted to make it happen.

The reason that we don't do these things is rather mundane: it's cheaper and easier to tap into the shared drinking water infrastructure than it is to collect your own water and roll your own silos/filtration tech. That might change as the world changes -- something has to give eventually if we use more groundwater than we replenish, but much like clean drinking water, I don't think it's a problem we should ask individual entities to solve. Governments would generally be much more suited to efficiently collecting drainwater, scrubbing it, distributing it, and mandating usage in wasteful commercial applications.

I'll go to bat for Roborock. All common "user serviceable" parts are available for direct order from them and remain the same between generations so even very old models can be easily maintained with first-party parts.

Let's not get too crazy. There's a 15 year period where young men tend to get injured and young women tend to give birth that acts as a major filter. If you plotted death rates on a graph it would look like a trident -- that's life without antibiotics.

Few movements self-identify as "Socialist", at best it's a taxonomical label. Attempting to talk about the finer points of socialism is akin to debating the pros/cons of "Animals" -- it's an overly broad topic and doomed to spiral into bike-shedding over semantics as soon as the conversation starts to look interesting.

With that being said, let's talk about some more concrete terms -- apologies in advance for wielding only slightly less clumsy terminology in my bullets:

• Socialized Medicine: Healthcare is a human right. I am pro human rights.
• Unions: Mostly positive. Nothing's perfect, but come on... you'd have to be blind not to see and feel for how exploited lower-class workers are without them
• Democratic Socialists of America: I'm a member -- that means I like them. I think their platform represents the ideal incrementalist approach to improving the current status quo
• European Welfare States (e.g.: Denmark): Too fuzzy to have a solid opinion on, but certainly a battle-tested template. I like most of their ideas most of the time
• Marxism: A genius body of economic philosophy, but increasingly out of place as time marches onward. I'd be for a by-the-book implementation (insofar as that's possible) in 1923, but not 2023
• Maoism/Leninism: Not exactly success stories. It's easier to appreciate their noble ideas & intentions with the distance lent by history, but that's altogether different from "liking"
• Communism: As a whole? I think the template holds promise and can be made to work in a modern context, but viability =/= realizability. The world would have to get turned upside-down first and it's questionable exactly how many of us would live through that... but never say never.
