@OsrsNeedsF2P But that's the problem we need to fix, not the reason to give up. There will be more people on Gitea and Matrix if you try. There is also more people on Reddit and Twitter, yet here we are.

That is a really bad analogy. If the "compilation" takes 6 months on a farm of 1000 GPUs and the results are random, then the dataset is basically worthless compared to the model. Datasets are easily available, always were, but if someone invests the effort in the training, then they don't want to let others use the model as open-source. Which is why we want open-source models. But not "openwashed" where they call it "open" for non-commercial, no modifications, no redistribution
@makeasnek Does BOINC have any verification or protection from malicious actors finishing the work incorrectly just to get through the captcha? If not, this might actually poison the BOINC network, because bad people will have a motivation to get credits without performing the work.

@7heo taking the term "open source" literally as just open for reading (not open for modification, distribution etc..) that's only what big monopolistic corporations want you to believe. They've been attempting to redefine the term for many years. Before they started this campaign it was pretty clear to everyone that open source means one of the OSI licenses. Think about it, if it was only about readability, then all javascript would be technically open source. The mixup is artificial.
@mormund It's not about the privacy of the code, but the privacy of the users clicking on github and then reading some news. They aggregate behavioral data about you.

"Only"?? That's a HUGE problem. That's exactly one of the walls keeping people inside github. Git protocol could distribute that, but it doesn't suit the commercial platform's interests -> go to open platforms instead.

So any license that limit "corporate leech" is NOT FOSS because FOSS is about having no such limits. At the same time FOSS doesn't say you can't charge money, because FOSS is NOT about restricting profit.

See the thing is if one matrix guy wants to talk to one discord guy, one of them needs to install a new app. And I think the world would be better if we all had more free/libre apps and less walled gardens, so I will strongly resist installing discord. Just yet another proprietary walled garden waiting for the rug-pull. Why? Just convince the other guy to use Matrix and over time our world will improve
@otter ouch, so that's even worse than I realized. I'm still getting some spam from the small abandoned M instances but only when it mentions the L name and it looks like even when it gets deleted from L, it still stays on the M side. I have spam posts in my timeline many hours old. This is bad because it looks like the only way to avoid them is to unfollow the community or block all spammers individually by myself.

@xilliah It's not free though. It came with licenses. And LLMs don't have the capability to "study", they are just a glorified random word generator.
Issues, milestones, discussions, pull requests, build logs, they all stay on the chosen host. That host can then add specific conditions to creating accounts, or participating in the discussion, searching code etc. Such as force you to have a phone number in your account, otherwise you won't be able to comment on issues. And all of these things might be locked in without a way to export and migrate to another host, so yes, it definitely matters where the project is hosted.

@Faresh 1.) Making it easier to analyze. There are multiple steps in the whole process which may be hiding an exploit. The "tarball-not-same-as-git" is a clear example. Sure, reviewing will still be necessary and it will still be difficult, but it doesn't have to be as difficult as today. 2.) stop giving maintainer rights, fork instead. That's what pull requests are for. 3.) we should be careful if our critical infrastructure depends on a hobby project - either pay, or don't depend.
@SorteKanin I'd like to see that. I have already onboarded about 35 students and my whole family to matrix, nobody had any problems with signup. Bigger problem is later if they get the infamous "Unable to decrypt message" error.

@something_random_tho The pathfinding algorithm is in the client app (like Organic Maps) and the data are in openstreetmap. Different apps can find different paths and there is not much we can do about it, because changing the pathfinding algorithm could break it for many other places. That's why I would rather modify the data, such as marking roads unsuitable for bikes, or making sure the nodes are properly connected, adding speed limits, road surface types... nudge the algo into the right path

I think the federation sometimes takes a couple of minutes, I saw this lemmy thread through two lemmy instances, and they showed different comments. Eventually it should synchronize though. And mastodon posts older than a week usually aren't shown through other than the poster's main instance.

this is true about all of the alternatives too, Lightning is just the only one honest about it. And as someone who's been using lightning to pay my phone bills, I can say it works ok.
in that case you are doing the whole "no-coding" all wrong. If you really need something that cannot be done by connecting the nodes and grouping them in flows, then instead of developing new function nodes, develop your own contrib packages. But there are a lot of existing packages, so maybe you don't need even that.

@pelespirit Not complicated at all. Llama is simply not open-source, the text of the license is in direct conflict with the meaning of open-source and any definition of that term.
