I personally would prefer LibreWolf over Mullvad, because it is based off Firefox.

They both are.

Western corporate media’s wild rumors of GINA spyware > known NSA spyware.

The rise of the suburban mall and its downward spiral are pre-Amazon, and largely had to do with tax decisions and costs to the public sector, though online shopping did accelerate the collapse. Slate, 2017: The Retail Apocalypse Is Suburban

@absentbird@lemm.ee, AFAICT, they’re technically correct, because your repo doesn’t appear to have a license. You should go add one now.

We sometimes ban people for false reporting. Something to keep in mind.

Nice try, neighborhood burglar.

Vivaldi is even worse: Unlike Firefox, its proprietariness doesn’t end at a closed-source DRM binary blob.

I admin lemmy.ml for 0 Biden/Putler/Xi bux per month. I got into it by doing a little posting, until the admins asked me if I wanted to waste even more of my free time, which I foolishly did.

😂 why waste time say lot word when few meme do trick

Just as there are two kind of race, white and political; and there are two kinds of gender, male and political; there also are two kinds of language, English and political.

Sorry but chud is not a protected class.

A KGB spy and a CIA agent meet up in a bar for a friendly drink.

“I have to admit, I'm always so impressed by Soviet propaganda. You really know how to get people worked up,” the CIA agent says.

“Thank you,” the KGB says. “We do our best but truly, it's nothing compared to American propaganda. Your people believe everything your state media tells them.”

The CIA agent drops his drink in shock and disgust. “Thank you friend, but you must be confused... There's no propaganda in America.”

Liberals often think that if someone has different opinions from them, then they must be a conservative, because they have no idea that socialists exist.

Sometimes there’s no European equivalent to American depravity.

In the mid-20th century, America was considered so culturally bankrupt that the CIA thought it should create some.

I see it a lot where there shouldn’t be any pedestrian activity.

This is a carbrained perspective. If an intersection is designed for cars to the exclusion of other uses, then others are unlikely to use it, which perpetuates car dependency. Even if all cars were electrified, car dependency would still be a massive problem in the US.

More often than not, when Americans say leftist they really mean left-liberalism a la Bernie Sanders, which is really center-left at most, and not actually leftist in the original sense, a sense which Americans have forgotten thanks to two Red Scares and the first Cold War.

The wundertech is just human labor under the hood? seen-this-one

Aren’t we paying them to do all this?

No? This question indicates a fundamental lack of understanding of the social relations, power dynamics, and motivations in open source software.

As someone who’s been in the industry in San Francisco since the mid-’90s, he speaks to my lived experience.

Tech workers dreamed of working for a big company for a few years before striking out on their own to start their own business that put that big company out of business. Then that dream shrank to working for a tech giant for a few years, quitting, and doing a fake startup to get aquihired back by your own boss and the world's most inefficient way to get a raise. And then it shrank even further to working for a tech giant for your whole life but there'd be free kombucha in the cafeteria and you get massages on Wednesdays. And now that dream is over, and all that's left is work for a tech guy until they fire your ass, like those 12,000 Googlers who got fired six months after a stock buyback that would have paid their salaries for the next 27 years.

Seriously, don't sign a CLA

A contributor license agreement, or CLA, usually (but not always) includes an important clause: a copyright assignment.

This is a strategy employed by commercial companies with one purpose only: to place a rug under the project, so that they can pull at the first sign of a bad quarter. This strategy exists to subvert the open source social contract. These companies wish to enjoy the market appeal of open source and the free labor of their community to improve their product, but do not want to secure these contributors any rights over their work.

Tankie is a floating signifier. If you ask twenty liberals what a tankie is you’ll get

  1. Twenty different answers, and
  2. Several people upset at being called a liberal because they don’t have even a Wikipedia-level understanding of liberalism or socialism.

On the one hand, the board was an insane cult of effective altruism / longtermism / LessWrong, so fuck them. But on the other hand, this was a worker revolt for the capitalists, which I guess shouldn’t be surprising since tech workers famously lack class consciousness.

Sometimes liberals think that socialists are the leftmost liberals, but we’re not liberals at all: we want nothing short of the abolition of private ownership of the means of production.

1 more...

Lemmygrad and Hexbear aren’t “leftist” in the confused sense that Americans usually mean “leftist.” They’re actually leftist in the original sense, meaning that they want to abolish private ownership of the means of production. To the extent they’re “widely hated,” it’s largely because the Anglosphere has been indoctrinated against real, actual socialism their entire lives.

Some people do get upset; some people don’t.

The easily upset don’t—or refuse to—understand that 1) some of us have brains that just don’t remember people’s names very well, and that 2) they should get over themselves.
