Randonneuring

long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy.

What a shitshow Reddit is. They banned all of the subreddits I moderate/created this morning.

I only go there to steal content that I then enhance manually. I always had a kneejerk reaction against the hackernews reposts on Reddit. So, I try to make my content cloning less conspicuous and I make sure to enhance the content with more depth when I bring it here.

Why the fuck is Plex even a company? Attention venture capitalists: Get your money grubbing fingers the fuck off decent technologies that should in no way be tied to profit-seeking. We live in a dystopian hellscape.

But surely, a 3D printer could/can. It's just that the software that runs on it shouldn't have shit security and there should be multiple safeguards and redundant fail-safe systems.

I did this with /r/Cardano mods back before Reddit was blocking all mention of the fediverse even in PM’s. I managed to get one of them to help mod my Cardano communities. I’d wager that it’s exceedingly hard to get in touch with mods over there now that Huffman is blocking fediverse recruitment.

This glitch is annoying. This link/project is dead in so many different ways.

  • It’s not open source.

  • The site is down.

  • NodeRed actually does what this non-working app says it does.

It's kind of a ghost town so far. But if we can wrestle control of social media away from corporate control, democracy across the world will be stronger for it. Regardless, I'm here for the long haul, making contributions FAR exceeding my efforts on Reddit.

Memmy App BETA is surprisingly usable already. It feels a lot like Apollo even though it has a long way to go.

It's hard to find instances that offer what world offers, so I get it.

OTOH, I ended up moving or handing over most of my communities that I had created on world because this instance is TOO popular and bogged down all the time. Plus, they make arbitrary and drastic decisions without discussion on matters like defederation and often banning. It's smart to go to a smaller instance but it's also risky because any instance could go down at any moment. That's why many of my communities are duplicated (across world and infosec) because it would be devastating to lose all of those quality links and engagement.

A few of the communities that I created here, I probably wouldn’t want to mod long-term. They’re a piece of cake at the moment but if the fediverse were to blow up, I’d have to hand them over to someone with more time.

!krita@lemmy.world , !gimp@lemmy.world , !darktable@lemmy.world , !guitaramps@lemmy.world , !offset@lemmy.world , !machinists@lemmy.world and a few others were just created to keep those names in safe hands and I’d prefer to safeguard them until I can pass them on to another person who is deeply committed to the collaborative spirit of FOSS and wants to run a community with fair and gentle moderation, no gate-keeping, and not ban-happy like /r/guitar on Reddit.

  • Rancilio Silvia ($450)
  • 2001 Chevy Prizm (at >200k miles, I actually had to scrap it even though it still ran perfectly due to sensor issues $1800)

  • Canon 5D MKIII ($3,000)
  • Kemper Profiler (still getting free software updates 12 years into its lifespan $1,800)
  • Fluke 87V (the best meter on earth $400)
  • Synology NAS (though I hear they have been enshittified $2,000)

Instant upvote for NixOS! ;)

Lemmy hug of death?

shouldn’t be be required to use a cloud service in order to use a piece of hardware that you bought and paid for.

of course. I didn't really insinuate that it should.

I have a Pelican 1510 that I keep my camera stuff in as well as many other pelicans of different sizes; however, I don't keep any batteries inside the cases..especially any that are Lithium Ion. I also keep a big packet of desiccant in the cases to prevent mold and fungus from spreading inside if left for long periods of time, unattended. These two items work together perfectly to preserve my gear. I suspect I could leave this gear in the cases for 100 years and come back to find all of it (except batteries) in 100% pristine condition.

iPhone 14 Pro w/ iOS 17 developer beta.

Honestly, if NixOS ever comes to a phone in any real way, I’ll probably eventually switch.

iOS is solid as hell compared to Android, IMO and I have a love- hate relationship with swift; wish I could use Haskell for a native iPhone app.

I use xmonad/polybar/rofi/dunst with Home Manager and flakes. You could just use my whole config and have it up and running in a day, deleting lines and adding others. Fork it and modify it to meet your preferences (as I did when I forked this amazingly slick config). I even made a custom typeface to add my favorite crypto logos to my Polybar.

If they’re storing it right, it is content addressed, meaning that their servers are aware of duplicates because each file is hashed.

The MOST sustainable way to change corporate behavior is to make it prohibitively expensive for them to engage in behavior that is bad for the environment by levying major financial penalties and taxes on the offending corporations.

Here's my main axe which consists of a Warmoth one-piece roasted swamp ash body and a Warmoth one-piece vintage style roasted quartersawn maple neck. I did a lot to it after Warmoth machined it but it is SO perfect: 🤌🏼

😂😂😂😂I saw that too and left it because I also found it hilarious.

Unless you want to run a stake pool on Cardano, you’d have to fork and modify my config.

Thanks for making the fediverse such an amazing community, everyone. We may have a long way to go before social media without billionaire control is ubiquitous, but I’m confident that this is the right way and it’s just a matter of time before most people realize that.

Remove the subsidies on agricultural products that get sprayed with glyphosate to increase yield. Corn, wheat, and potatoes in this country are poison because of the chemicals they spray them with....then they go and put that tainted product into sugars like HCFS.

Fair enough.

It really isn't that bad, though, IMO. Here's my super-customized xmonad tiling window manager NixOS config fully realized in a github repo. Feel free to fork it if it helps tame some of the intimidation factor.

Glad to help! I’m merely standing on the shoulders of the giants before me.

Memmy is already really, really good in Beta.

I absolutely adore it. Today, I added a simple bash script to one of my config options that runs just before my nix flake update command that gets the sha256 hash for the latest release of the Cardano-node then writes that hash into my flake.nix file using sed. Then, when I do a flake update that little hash update (that I used to manually do) is also built in.

I use xmonad and won't switch until there's a viable alternative (probably never).
