But can it run proprietary software used in the industry? From Excel to Photoshop, if you are in a collaborative professional environment, you can't run away from those, and don't tell me you can use the alternatives in Linux, because no, you can't. This is not linux fault, but it's still an issue you can't handwave.

I love linux, but you can't expect people to adopt it just because it's objectively better than windows.

Jesus was friends with a prostitute. I'm sure he would be ok with some twerking.

The problem is religious nuts who take everything to the extreme .

9gag... That's a word I haven't seen in a long time.

Reddit will stay, heck Digg if still around. It won't be the same though.

I thought Romeo was a teenager too? I mean, the difference in age should be around 3 years they are supposed to be 13 and 16, although the age of Romeo is really never specified, I wouldn't say it's that problematic.

I find Anakin and Padme, or Bella and Edward more problematic, and there's not much outrage for those.

I actually think the opposite. Reddit is here to stay, sure. But Lemmy will become a more niche space and with better quality for those interested, but not necessarily mainstream, and that's ok.

That's a font/design issue, not a character issue. If that were the case, then no one could use letters (or unicode characters) for their logo.

Ha, jokes on you for thinking him and his followers think white immigrants are "immigrants". They use that word because it's the only acceptable one, but it's clearly not what they are referring to.

Lots of people use their "gaming" laptops as working stations. I barely use mine for playing, but I like to have a big screen with full keyboard and a nice GPU for my work, and something I can take with me if needed, for example for a long work trip. I also have a smaller laptop for things on the go.

I mean, that's what I do. Will I be able to convince my 60 yo colleague that had been using the same workflow for decades? No, not a chance.

I use both. Sadly, I have lots of software that doesn't work (or works pretty bad) on Linux. I love Linux, but there's no denying it can be frustrated, specially if your hardware doesn't support it, and that applies to too many people who has no saying in the hardware they use.

So in what world? Corporate world, science, CAD modelling...

With some cables sometimes quality is higher with price though. I prefer a good 5 USD usb cable than a shitty one that breaks at the joint after a few days of use.

Same with audio cables for guitars, sound is probably not going to suffer (although really long cables can have some issues), but wear damage is definitely noticeable for the very cheap ones.

Not OP, I don't have respect for JP, but he still was a professor back then. This is like Degree Tyson starts talking BS on behavioural psychology, that doesn't make him wrong about all his previois statements on astrophysics.

I agree! But it's surprising that even Google doesn't have a native app for Drive. There's one for android, but not for Linux? I'm guessing it all boils down to number of users,, but still...

Don't know... I hope you are right, but too many people were saying the same in 2016

You basically need professional headphones and speakers to notice any difference, my guess is that 99% of Spotify customers have headphones that didn't cost more than $100, so why would they care? I mean, I have nice headphones and speakers and after some blind tests I couldn't notice any difference.

Mine was also mandrake in the early 2000's. There was no Ubuntu back then, and Mandrake was the "home desktop" for Linux, specially if you didn't need servers running. I think it worked fine, not sure why it got so much hate.

I'm not a rocket scientist, but I research complex systems. Failure is the best way to improve something, even if you know it's going to fail, you want to see how and what are the repercussions. I've done so many experiments that I knew were doomed, but I still have to do them just because I wanted to see how the system is would react.

Not a fan boy of Elon by the way, not trying to defend him or anything.

Except if you're not in the US. Don't get me wrong, it's still expensive to have a kid, but there's no risk of going broke during birth procedures (complicated or not) in most developed and even some developing countries.

The gang solved the Argentinian inflation.... music starts

I wish Wine worked well enough to use Excel. We are not talking about adding up numbers in a cell. Once you include macros, or a reference manager in Word, Wine is not good enough. The same can be said about propietary software, like autocad, or software used to control equipment. Also, good luck convincing a regular user to get familiar with wine.

WPS is great for simple files. Again, not good enough for complex files, especially if it is a corporate collaboration environment. I have lost count on the amount of ppt files that didn't display well when it used WPS.

Every other year I try all the alternatives you mention, hoping they got better, and I always come back to use a dual boot or a virtual machine, which is not a thing your regular user wants to do.

Well do you know if that lady bought it only for use in court?

Jesus, people drawing conclusions from a still image. It could have been a gift? Maybe it's not even her laptop? Maybe she has so much money that she wanted it for the rgb? Maybe she does video editing as a hobbie? Maybe she uses it for traveling for gaming and work, because NOONE brings one laptop for gaming and one for work when travelling.

Tell me more about what she does after work is over, you seem to know...

Wait, are you guys getting money from climate denialists? Count me in!

I am in academia, and I hate how everyone in my field interacts there. Even my supervisor posts relatively important news there (new papers published or conferences etc).

I used to check it without logging in. But now I can't see a thread without logging in. From all the fields, I thought academia was the first to leave, but no. I tried the mastodon but it is still a ghost town..

The point is to make money, do they charge extra to increase the data cap? If so, it's all about money.

This is not your uncle selling an old TV to your neighbour, this impacts lots of consumers and other businesses.

As a consumer I'm a part of the business , so you are actually advocating people to be involved, even though you are contradicting your self because I don't think you understand the implications of "minding your own business".

It's an option, but if "none" wins then there's no shared knowledge of anything. The question really is, do you prefer to cause genocide but have new tech, or keep old tech with no genocide.

They can't identify particular and specific interests, but they definitely can predict trends on consumer behaviour. I don't think Google wants your data to predict when you will want Thai. That's preposterous.

They are reaping billions on ad revenue, it definitely works, it won't forever, but it does at the moment.

That's my point, I use linux as much as I can, but if 80% of your colleagues use Windows... You don't have much choice.

Only until very recently LibreOffice is almost on par with Microsoft Office. 10 years ago OpenOffice was horrible, I tried my best to use it but unless you were using it only to write letters to your city hall, it was unusable.

I pay for gym just to force myself to go. Uni had a free gym and I used it a lot the first month, then nothing. I just don't have the discipline...

Any answer would be hypothetical by definition... Not sure what's your point there.

OP asks a relatively simple question, and gets scolded as it committed murder.

For all we know OP is the only user and is just playing with Linux, and just wants a simple (probably unnecessary) shortcut because he's GUI oriented.

This is kind of someone asking how to open their lunchbox easier, and get treated like they are giving a copy of their house keys to everyone in town.

Chill... Not everyone is running a maximum security level server. If OP screws their system (like most of us do at some point), I'm sure a fresh re-install would be enough for them.

How is acknowledging a bad connection by your ISP contrarian? Are you saying his problems do not exist?

They probably mean that young people now is drinking less that previous generations. Sure, we have known for a while that alcohol is bad, but only recently it has been seen as "why would you drink it?", And it's falling out as social engager.

Saying that, I still drink, I know it's not great for my health, but I usually have a good time with it, and it helps with my introvert Ness.

That's my point. If he used a copyrighted/copylefted font, he might be in trouble. But he doesn't get in trouble just for using an unicode character.

That reminds me of a discussion with someone who thought Hispanics can't be white, I was like, have you ever seen seen a Spaniard?

There's no need for a "winner", why are people so fixated that it has to be one or the other?

All the technologies we have are not exclusive, having more options is always better when it comes to energy.

This "winning" debate has to stop. There's no gas vs diesel vs natural gas winner... There is no hydro, wind, PV winner.... They all can coexist just fine.

There is a place for hydrogen fuel, and there's a place for battery vehicles.

Stop debating this like they are football teams.

I mean, that's what I do, do you think that's feasible for everyone? No. Not everyone is willing to go through that much hassle.

If you are going to have casual sex, you still need to wear a condom, what are you talking about? The lack of sex education in this thread is incredible.

I understand, but my point is why people are being so judgmental and prejudice about it? Maybe that's her actual working laptop, I've seen companies indulging their best workers with stuff like that.

Even if it's an odd choice to bring to court, it's still just a laptop, it's not like she decided to go to court in bermudas.
