They are conveniently placing flags everywhere, to help your memory.

  • boot from a btrfs snapshot
  • run docker without running a second kernel
  • boot an older kernel, in case something fails
  • run the system completely without a gui, to save video RAM for other tasks
  • distro hopping
  • use multiple desktop environments
  • use your computer without a mouse
  • create a directory named CON
  • use old hardware painlessly
  • have your system not spy on you without extra effort
  • create weird stacks of software raid, volume manager, disk encryption and filesystems and then boot from it
  • read the kernel developer mailing list and be hyped for new kernel features like bcachefs, which will hopefully come someday

XMPP and Matrix are already there. A large tree grows from a green platform labeled “ActivityPub + more”. ActivityPub is a protocol for communicating between different applications in the Fediverse. The trunk of the tree is labeled The Fediverse, to indicate that all the applications within the tree crown are part of the The Fediverse. Image source

Mods used third party tools to help them with their unpaid work. These tools relied on access to the reddit api.

Then reddit charged ridiculous prices for api access, which would mean the apps would need money, so mods would need to pay to do their unpaid work or use the inferior reddit interface.

Given these choices, some mods decided to leave instead.

This shouldn't be the case. Offering the source code of a project to the world is extra work and an act of kindness. We should reward it in kind.

Yes, "VideoLAN Client" doesn't sound like anything which might have network support.

Only convenient for those who are on discord. Everyone else is excluded.

The energy demand of AI will harm humanity, because we keep feeding it huge amounts of energy produced by burning fossile fuels.

Emacs does it all and is actually pretty nice though.

Oh, not Minix?

A short name for communities would be groups. I like to call the users fedizens, as it is not specific to one software.

You can self-host libretranslate: https://libretranslate.com/

Emacs will be there for you, once vscode gets abandoned.

LLMs don't state facts, they are just fancy calculators for language. If you use them, as if they were a database of facts, you will make a fool out of yourself. Like stating that the guy who destroyed german science was an effective leader.

Hey, I'd like to help here with some clarification: the vulnerability affected winrar, not the RAR archive format. In fact, it happened when opening zip files, not rar files.

7zip is not only capable of extracting 7z archives, but also zip and rar. Thus using 7zip to open a malicious archive would prevent you from being a victim of said attack, which is what the previous author meant.

So you wouldn't need to change the archive format of your existing files, as this was only about not using winrar to open possibly malicious archives.

What a horrible idea. Can you even use your terminal, when you are offline with this?

Maybe get a pillow to make yourself more comfortable.

Make me use windows and I will write a similar blog post about me hating every second of it. But I don't have to, so I won't.

The part about dragging and dropping files like its the 90s, instead of just pushing to your git repo was funny.

I consider using windows as self-harm. It is a decision you make. I choose not to harm myself in this way, so this does not concern me.

Thank you for this Sean! It is nice read, that nomadic identity is still being worked on.

What are you looking for? If you are into painting, Krita might be worth a try.

For software running on GNU Emacs I like reading Emacs News: https://sachachua.com/blog/category/emacs-news/

No problem, quality will continue to degrade, until you will be happy to switch.

There is a vim mode available in a lot of other applications though.

Maybe boot a fast OS from an external SSD? So the harddisk can stay untouched.

You know, I wouldn't care about being replaced by a machine, as long as I get UBI. Then I could just do what I like to do and wouldn't need to care whether I actually make money with it.

Maybe Mailspring or Geary might be something in the direction you are looking.

Very cute, are these apples or cherries on the dress? I can recommend strawberry dresses, they look also very nice. 🙂

I used a pinephone for a week or so, but people got angry at me, because calling me was impossible. Apart from that it is a slow but very interesting device. Mine is broken now, because I somehow managed to fry the wifi chip. I used arch btw.

Install all the patches immediately.

GNU Emacs of course. I am particularly fond of spacemacs, because I like vim keybindings. For git functionality we have the excellent magit package on our side, which makes Emacs also my favorite git interface.

Fuck them. I hope everyone for whom it is feasible switches to something like Godot.

Finally! I hope the encryption will get an audit in the near future. 🙂

You mean something like waypipe? https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mstoeckl/waypipe/

You will be delighted to read about Evil mode, which is a vim-like editor for the Emacs operating system. 😁

Facebook Messenger is based on XMPP.
