Money.

Now that USB-C is the required cable, people can go out and buy any cheap cable they want. The law turned a proprietary cash cow into a low return commodity item.

Played a lot this week. For those on the fence this game feels amazing. Terrific gun play and movement. This is a real ‘back-to-basics’ battlefield-like shooter. I highly recommend jumping in on it.

They’re too expensive. Lower the price and I’d buy one. Remember when we were promised a $40k F-150 lightning? Now they retail for like $70k minimum and dealers tack on an extra $25k for shits and giggles.

I’m all for compensating moderators but I think it should come with additional oversight, vetting, and higher expectations. There are many terrific moderators out there who absolutely deserve to be compensated for their efforts. However, there have been too many instances of power hungry mods who have had a negative effect on a community.

Either hire mods as employees so that they have oversight from management or make it so mods can be voted out. There needs to be some level of accountability.

When we couldn’t share a family password anymore we just didn’t sign up for our own account. Easy as that. Been watching a ton more Hulu as a result. Netflix isn’t worth more than a one-month sub/year.

New ways of cooling data servers and batteries for EVs. Rather than typical air or water/glycol cooling we’re immersing the components in a dielectric fluid. It’s an interesting space as both the hardware and fluids are being developed simultaneously. The company I work for is developing the fluid.

About 90% of the fluids out there are just oils taken directly from a refinery and repackaged under different names with a ton of marketing. Yet, end consumers don’t really understand the technical details of the the fluids so they tend to fall for whoever has nice marketing. We’re out to change that and show that the chemistry we add improves the performance and durability of the fluid. So half the job is engineering and the other half is educating customers.

As more people join one will get selected. There was r/cars and r/autos for a long time. R/cars won out in the end.

I think the free money train has ended and people are now left with ridiculous grocery bills and can’t afford the $70k vehicles others were previously financing at 0%.

Interest rates have destroyed affordability and now people are looking for the cheapest thing on the lot that fits their needs. Expect inventories to rise in everything but the cheapest vehicles until OEMs get with the programs and reduce prices.

COVID is over and we’re ‘back to normal’ according to every employer out there. How about prices come back to normal as well.

This is false. Nuclear has a very competitive levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Nuclear has high upfront costs but fuel is cheap and the reactor can last much longer than solar panels. The big picture matters not just upfront costs.

Lol, hell no. Especially when the movie will be streaming in 3 months time. Haven’t been to a theater since Endgame.

They’re blinded by dollar signs that won’t come to fruition. Complete brain dead move on their part.

So all the OEMs in China signed a pledge to maintain ‘normal’ pricing. They’re openly colluding to fix car prices when they were dropping quickly as a result of supply and demand renormalizing.

The only thing I’m critical of here is how does this pull back in VC funding/company valuations compare to other industries? VCs have pulled back in general as money is now very expensive as a result of high interest rates.

I could definitely see that being frustrating. My parents have a couple accounts setup for their PHEV. Let’s hope as the infrastructure gets better that the administrative side gets better as well.

3M announced they were exiting this space, rightfully so and probably a decade late. But I’ve heard rumblings in the industry that the US Govt might require them to continue to produce these awful materials as they are used in defense-related applications. Hope that’s not the case and we can shutdown all other producers (Chemours/DuPont etc) as well.

The base price for a minivan (Toyota Sienna) is like $36k, almost $10k more expensive than the latest Maverick pricing. Siennas also aren’t really any easier to find either, they’re very in demand by young families right now.

Agreed with a lot of your prospective on functionality and I’m hopeful minivans are making a comeback as they’re much more practical than the half ton or full size pickups people are buying.

That is my understanding as well.

I think this will kill some demand though which might result in trucks sitting on lots this time next year. If RAM and Toyota come out with their own compact trucks Ford may be forced to introduce some incentives with that kind of MSRP.

I hope so. I think the demand for the Maverick and the hybrid in particular showed there is a strong market for compact trucks.

Looking forward to seeing what other OEMs put forward.

I would say not too far off BF3. There is a drone and I would say the sniping is a little too strong to the point where a few people play it like CSGO. But it’s nothing like CoD or the newer battlefields.

Edit: By new CoDs I mean no wall running or jet packs. No dumb kill streaks. There is an element of run and gun but it’s limited if effectiveness.

Cox reports on the Mannheim Index so the sources are the same.

Same here. So far so good.

Not as much activity as Reddit obviously, but I’m embracing it by seeking out the more active communities. I definitely fell into a rut on Reddit by only sticking to a handful of subs. This transition is forcing me to develop new interests, it’s great!

You’re not unless you order it. Although I suspect you might see better availability starting this model year.

I think the point here is that the Maverick is quite a bit cheaper than a minivan. I think a more fair comparison, speaking of price only, is a half ton like a Tacoma or Ranger.

But I wholeheartedly agree with your point that many people would be better off with a minivan than a truck. A minivan provides the functions needed for most people much better than trucks do, and come with better MPG and a comfier cabin.

Some mods may be concerned about losing their mod status if they go to Lemmy.

Completely agree but not sure being in a union would stop these layoffs. Tech companies massively overhired during COVID, and many really dropped their standards. So now their revenue is dropping due to consumer demand falling AND they’re stuck with too many employees.

It doesn’t look great obviously but these tech companies expanded way too fast and are paying the price now. Unfortunately so are innocent workers.

Don’t need to, just down-blend from the available fuel used from weapons put out of commission as a result of disarmament treaties.

Now, about those materials used to construct solar panels…

The Lariat does have the Lux package now included. But you’re completely right. The appeal of this truck was its affordability. I think the interior was appropriate for the $20k price point but not sure it’s really meeting the $35k+ price point.

I suspect that once the initial flow of orders passes that the demand for the Maverick at this price point will crash. They’ll have to introduce rebates that bring the price back inline with expectations.

Raw material is usually a small fraction of the cost of refueling. I would also argue that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is a small blip in the lifetime of a reactor, ~80 years. Transient pricing will have a negligible effect on the LCOE.

A lot of the NOVEC line is/was manufactured in Belgium. That plant was shut down for several months because high levels of PFAS was found in the surrounding area.

They cleaned it up and restarted the plant, only to announce they’re exiting the business by 2025.

I agree that the regulatory issue was their main motivator for shutting down PFAS manufacturing. Their plants (like Belgium) probably require significant maintenance and improvements, meaning millions in CAPEX. Money they probably don’t want to spend on products that will be globally banned within the decade.

Yep, demand has cratered as a result of inflation in other areas and high inflation rates. Watch what happens when student loan payments return.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant the movie Avengers: Endgame.

I’d argue that the price cuts and increased production had the most significant effect. Other OEMs are jacking up prices right and left and dealers are adding $5k on top. Tesla is a simple, easy, affordable buy right now. Never thought I’d say that.
