I actually don't have a problem paying for online services. I host my own email, I pay for Kagi search and I do monthly donations to Mozilla and Wikipedia. What I have an issue with is services that start out as advertisement based and then introduce paid plans, because now you still have all these shitty mechanics just for driving up engagement which results in unhealthy incentives for content creators and rabbit holes. I want a service that is for YouTube what Kagi is to Google Search. But perhaps that model is too difficult to monetize, I don't know.

Is that screenshot from this year? ARK came out 2015, so if this person had 2 years of playtime in 2020, then they basically spent 40% of their time every day playing this game. That's 9.6 hours every day!

I've also used Kagi for two months and can really recommend it! I switched from Google to DuckDuckGo a few years back, but Kagi is just so much faster and also generally has better results.

I'm all for paying for the media I consume, but I will never pay for YouTube. First and foremost, I don't think they pay artists enough, which is why I buy all my music albums individually on services such as Bandcamp.

Second, I believe Google is working hard on turning the internet into a privacy violating walled garden riddled with unblockable ads, where all relevant technologies and standards are de facto controlled by them. I use uBlock and reVanced to block ads on YouTube and pay content creators through Patreon because I WANT to hurt Google financially by spending their compute resources without giving them ad impressions. I think everyone should do the same.

The Lovely Bones. Haven't actually read the book, but that movie was a painful experience to get through. Peter Jackson knows how to do special effects and spends over two excruciating hours showing off all of them, even though they add little to the story which could have been told in less than half the time.

I got the PS1 anniversary edition which had Metal Gear Solid on it, and I don't get how that game was ever as popular as it was. The handling is super janky, and the graphics is so dark that you basically cannot discern the environment and the enemy unless you stay still and watch for moving pixels.

Same here. I don't even use emacs for development anymore (I use IntelliJ since all my work is on the JVM and Typescript) but I still have an emacs running in the background for magit and org-mode. Magit is insanely effective for performing complex rebasing and cherry-picking tasks.

I don't think spamming Reddit with Lemmy links will do much besides paint a picture of Lemmy users as obnoxious. I'd rather have Lemmy differentiate itself as more than just a Reddit alternative by offering something different and have the users come on their own. It's not about quantity for me, but quality. For example, I'd love to see some communities that focus on long-form discussions and heavy moderation to promote a more nuanced debate. I'd also love to see some media outlets host and moderate their own Lemmy instances to try and move the debate away from Facebook and the likes.

It was a bit unclear for me, but does this article say that HBO Max will become merged with Discovery+? I really hope that's not true. I have HBO because of the relatively high quality, and I would be willing to pay more just to keep the braindead shit from Discovery from polluting the catalog.

Almost exclusively Bandcamp. I sometimes use YouTube or Spotify (but pay for neither) to listen to stuff that I can't buy on Bandcamp.

There are really not many places left where you can actually buy and own digital music, which I think is sad. I used to use eMusic before it became occupied with blockchain stuff, I used 7digital before it was made unavailable in my country, and I sometimes used Google Play Music for the stuff I couldn't find elsewhere. Now there is only Bandcamp left.

I'll just use this opportunity to mention kagi.com, a search engine that you pay for, but which doesn't track you and gives you controls for customizing your search results yourself instead of letting an algorithm build a profile of your habits. I've used it for months now, and I'm not going back.
