Most mobile devices won't work without batteries. The best way to work around this is to supply it with 4.2V (anything between 3V and 4.2V will do) over the battery connector.

If your hate only goes towards touchscreens and not having physical buttons, Mazda is (or at least was) very anti-touchscreen. I haven't done any research on their current stance or if they have good EVs, but a neighbor of mine was really happy with his Mazda ICE car for having a button for everything.

Proxigram is like bibliogram. You can use one of their public instances

In that case you can try adding before:2023 or similar to your search

While not FOSS, the closest thing we have to a drop-in replacement would be Magic Earth. It uses openstreetmap data, supports fully offline usage, has satellite images (only online though) and best of all, no tracking or telemetry.

This could be a long shot but if it's a Samsung Galaxy Tab S, the battery connector solder joints kinda die after a while, which can either be fixed by reflowing them or by applying pressure (I have a tablet with that issue). You could try pressing on the battery connector and see if it works then.

Yooo this reminds me, I think there was an AITA comment on reddit some time ago about a guy who burned down a Pizza place due to putting the entire bee movie script in a message box.

Edit: I believe it was a comment on an Askreddit thread, but a quick google search appears to not be enough to find it

Edit 2: I think it's this one, no clue if it actually happened though https://www.reddit.com/r/tifu/comments/bjttfe/tifu_by_ordering_food_online_amd_essentially/

I haven't done this myself, but I assume you can turn off the display in Desktop Mode. I assume somewhere in the "normal" Linux settings there will be the usual Turn Screen Off after ... and Go To Sleep after ... You could just set the screen to turn off after 5 mins, then set sleep to never and that should do it.

I believe Blurays are still a very good medium for long term data storage, like a cold offsite backup.

Huh, pretty much every plan in Germany includes infinite call minutes and messages

Public transport in Magic Earth mostly works for me. It's not as good as Google Maps, but it's better than nothing.

I use Dual Shock 4s for all my PC gaming. They have all the features you'd expect, work with most apps and games (and there's DS4Windows for the rest), the bluetooth makes them great not only for something like the SteamDeck but also my phone, a friends iPad, ...

And the best thing is I can pick one up used for around 20€.

The newer Sony Xperias sound like a good fit for you. I haven't used one myself, but they're pretty decent from what I can gather.

Also it seems as if Sony is the only phone manufacturer shipping flagships with headphone jacks and SD card slots.

On another note, I highly recommend the GSMarena Phone Finder for getting a general selection of phones that have the features you care about.

Soumds like revolt might be interesting to you.

Push Notifications don't really exist for Lemmy yet, as they aren't supported in the backend currently:

As someone else here said, your best bet is probably monitoring your Inbox RSS feed.

Another big factor with the OLED deck is that it gets significantly more battery life. Especially in less demanding games, you can get 2x or even 3x the battery life of the LCD version (cries in LCD deck).

As for storage size, if you're comfortable replacing the internal M.2 SSD, I believe you can save a bit of money there by buying the smallest size model (+ you get a bonus smaller SSD which can be nice for some projects). There is an ifixit guide for it.

If you're not up for that and still want to save money, the micro SD card support is supposed to really good and practically indistinguishable from the internal SSD from what I've heard, but I haven't yet tried it myself.

I really enjoyed Dave the Diver on my deck, I'm only 9h in but didn't play for a while due to lack of time.

Another one that isn't really my thing but uses practically no battery is Minecraft through PrismLauncher (I don't like playing Minecraft on controller).

And some other games from my library that play nicely on deck, some might take a little bit more power:

  • Celeste
  • Geometry Dash (especially with the new platformer levels)
  • Hue (might be a bit boring, I got it for free)
  • Pole (might be a bit frustrating, I got it for free)
  • Rayman Legends (there's a certain patch to make it run without uplay)
  • Stardew Valley
  • Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion
  • Turnip Boy Robs a Bank
  • Undertale

I use this app for scanning documents, I just tried sharing a picture to the app and running OCR on that picture, which also worked fine, so it should also fit your usecase.

The units can be adjusted in Settings > Appearance > Units, or are you missing options there?

High resolution displays on laptops, SSDs in laptops.

Those are the two I can think of right now. I believe Linus (LTT) talked about this on WAN show not too long ago aswell.

Yesss fcast looks incredibly promising. Sadly the only app implementing it seems to be GrayJay, I really hope it will catch on more.

The first quote is taken out of context:

Not only are privacy and data protection founding principles for both Mobifree and F-Droid, the use of tracking-based in-app advertising poses a moral dilemma as well. If someone wants to gain access to an app, but does not have the financial means to purchase it, they can use it at a different kind of price - their user data.

For me this reads as them explaining and condemning that dilemma, instead of considering it as an option for F-Droid.

If the main battery isn't "meant to be replaced", it will often act as the CMOS battery (e.g. MacBooks have been doing this since roughly 2008).

My personal gripe with mobile Firefox is searching by using the address bar.

I have had countless times where I put in my search prompt, followed by pressing the little X all the way on the right and thus clearing the address bar. My brain just really expects an enter button to be there.

I think my current record is entering a search term and then clearing it literally directly 3 times in a row, getting more and more confused each time.

HoleyLight sounds like what you're searching for. I've never personally tried it though.

i use miracast where I can (my TV and Samsung phone support it natively), as it pretty much just works and is a decent protocol. Sadly every phone manufacturer that isn't Samsung seems to have abandoned it right now, but it is still widely supported in TVs. On Linux, there is the app gnome-network-displays (yes it also works on KDE) to cast your screen over miracast.

Miracast is an actual local streaming protocol (closely related to WiFi Direct). For content streaming the only FOSS standard I am aware of is FCast, but sofar it only is implemented in the GrayJay Android app.

Edit: There is also Deskreen for casting a PC screen.

For casting mobile to PC there is also scrcpy.

This isn't really casting, but I often find that an HDMI cable (often paired with a USB-C to HDMI dongle) is the simplest and most reliable way to display a phone screen on another monitor (as long as the phone supports DP altmode).

On Samsung phones Samsung Gamelauncher Gaming Hub gives you the option to mute all game audio, but I'm afraid this is a Samsung exclusive feature.

Another feature I have on my Galaxy S10 is the ability to set different outputs for apps, ie. "bad sounds" from some app to phone speakers (which are muted), and the rest to my Bluetooth headphones.

On my phone this feature is called "Separate app sound" and is located in Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound. It might also be a Samsung exclusive though.

Edit: I have yet another, sadly probably Samsung exclusive, solution. Samsung Sound Assistant let's you set a different volume for each app (like Windows volume mixer).

It'll be a collab with HP!

Yes definitely, here's my Steam 'Local Multiplayer' collection:

Nintendo also has some great couch co-op games, for example:

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Nintendo Switch Sports
  • Super Mario Party

I also very much agree with the other commenter here, it's such a shame that couch co-op is dying. The only ones still believing in it seem to be Nintendo.

Another game that's fun to play is Unravel 2, but for me the Steam version had all sorts of problems so I ultimately ended up refunding it again.

Infinity has it in settings, but I haven't tried it yet

I presume your phone can't enter deepsleep if it's not in Standby. I'm not that knowledgeable on that topic but another point (that might be practically the same thing) is AFAIK your CPU and GPU can't shutdown, as your phone is still on and rendering a black image.

This looks awesome, Thanks!

I started making an Android app for it here. It's obviously still in a very early stage, but it can already kind of display profiles. Also disclaimer I don't really know what I'm doing, this is more of a yolo I wanna look into Android app development kinda thing.

Streaming, especially video, is quite challenging and expensive. The fact that discord's video streaming was so cheap was always somewhat suspicious.

Here's a similar question, my answer should also be relevant to your question.

As for Switch emulation, yuzu still runs great, with many playable games on the deck. If you don't have the AppImage or Flatpak already, make sure to get it from a reputable source.

Edit: Or, if you're lazy, just use Ryujinx (also available in EmuDeck).

Miracast is pretty good, but I don't think it supports DRM-content. Also it seems to be getting phased out in favor of chromecast.

Dolphin (Wii and Gamecube emulator) sounds like something for you.

MineTest should also fit your criteria.

I believe there are a few games on F-Droid, I haven't tried any of them tho. Other than that, I believe the best games for you would be Wii games or an older console. Possibly also switch (with yuzu if you find an apk), but that requires a beefy phone.

The reason Signal does this is that they consider your deivce storage 'unsafe', as it can be more easily accessible by other apps. AFAIK not providing the option to let you do it anyway is purely because the Signal devs don't want to.

Threema for example has an option to save all received media to normal storage, similar to WhatsApp.

Damn even though you explained the abbreviation I still read it as Wife Approval Factor for a second and was very confused

I find it even more puzzling as surely it has to be a decent increase in server demand to constantly be streaming video. How can that be worth it??
