If you’re a resident of Texas, please be aware that watching porn is bad for you, jacking off will make you blind and that you’re a filthy person for coming here. If you’re from the rest of the world, why are you reading this instead of watching porn?

Hey, when your game runs on my PC or console, I am the one paying the electricity bill for your game. Why the fuck do I have to pay for this, when I already bought the game? Isn't it enough, that we gamers invest real money and our time into your game? We want to get paid, too!

I’m not sure what to think of this article. I had to read for several paragraphs to get to know, that the problem is neither selling any user data collected by the browser (e.g. text inputs), nor is it the fact that they’re a search engine. It just that they offer an API for search which not only lists the same data as on the website, but offers a longer excerpt/text snippet for each result as it is seen on other search engines for some featured results. Depending on which UI you might want to develop for the results, that’s basically a nice feature as your app can decide which snippets get shown.

And now the problem seems to be that they offer a paid API and these results are a part of it? From data that was crawled by them by (as they’re saying) respecting robots.txt and - in most cases - was public anyways?

As far as I know, no one tried to clone TikTok for the fediverse. But I think the inherent problem is the algorithm. TikTok isn't like Youtube or any other social network, where you follow people. You have an algorithm that tracks everything you do and watch and then suggests you video based on their topics, less on the people in them. I guess it'd be hard to implement, as many in the fediverse are not keen about tracking.

....so nothing really changed for them and they're still doing basically the same things? /s

Fun fact - GDPR is about European persons, not European servers. If an European citizen has a fediverse account on an American/African/Asian/… server and Meta collects all of their data and processes it, they are still in violation of GDPR. Locking European (Instagram) accounts out of Threads doesn’t make them comply magically with GDPR.

Good luck meta, have fun handling all those GDPR requests and proving that Europeans have consented that you suck up all their data…

The GDPR states, that request must be completed within a month. In case you're from Europe, you could report reddit to your local authorities if they don't respond within that time frame. A single report won't probably cause a reaction. But several reports from several individuals on the other hand...

Wait.... They sell games? I thought, they'd just gift you some every week!

It looks like you changed the position of your mouse cursor. Would you like to reboot to apply these changes?

Yeah, basically you have three options:

  1. Create and train your own LLM. This is hard and needs a huge amount of training data, hardware,...
  2. Use one of the available models, e.g. GPT-4. Give it a special prompt with instructions and a pile of data to get fine tuned with. That's way easier, but you need good training data and it's still a medium to hard task.
  3. Do variant 2, but don't fine-tune the model and just provide a system prompt.

In theory there are unbeatable levels. With some updates Nintendo fixed glitches, hit boxes, etc. Usually, when you play a level that was uploaded on an older version of the game, you get the old behavior. But there was one update, which did not adhere to this, and which did cause some levels (designed with now fixed glitches) to be unbeatable now.

But this project isn't about beating all levels, it's about beating all uncleared levels. Since those glitch levels probably were beaten before the patch OR you might be able to play them on an older version of the game (if the server allows it), these shouldn't be a huge problem.

You may joke, but if I had a penny for every time someone asked me to solve a problem, that basically boils down to the halting problem, I'd be rich.

It gets better if you backup and then get the prompt again after the next feature update of windows - because you get asked again and if you click on it will do a second backup which means that now all files are twice in your OneDrive, then three times, then four times, then… a reminder to upgrade OneDrive further as your storage is full.

I had to clean up this less more than once now for people and even witnessed it live after doing the upgrade for them sigh

Nah, it just marks your question as duplicate.

Yes, but

  1. Begin transaction
  2. Update table set x='oopsie'
  3. Sees 42096 rows affected
  4. Rollback

Can prevent a restore, whereas doing the update with auto commit guarantees a restore on (mostly) every error you make

Also I heard some rumors that a few dozen internet users are from other places than the US and may not have a clue about laws and rules in a foreign country - or may have only heard a few bits and words and are trying to make sense of them.

Do you know the term "trust thermocline"?

Basically it described a problem with the boiling the frog technique. There's a point for every user at which they're fed up with the bullshit, lose all trust in you(r company) and are hard to impossible to get back as a customer. Every customer leaving has a little unnoticeable effect on you, but with time there will be so many people that you lost that all your tactics to lock your users in will fail.

On my work laptop, OneDrive did randomly decide to zero out all files. Even the ones in the web interface. Even the old versions, so restoring those affected files by using older versions wasn't working. I had to rollback my whole OneDrive to a point about 2 weeks earlier and lost everything in between... Fuck OneDrive.
