I thought that during commercial breaks the characters in the show I was watching were still doing things and I was missing it because the commercials were not pausing the show in the background but playing over top of it.

The few people I know with this issue fall into one of two categories.

  1. Access issues. There are some kinds of road blocks accessing a quality shower/bath. Which makes showering/bathing is an uncomfortable activity for some reason. Maybe it's that their shower is really small and cramped, with a low quality shower head. Maybe it's an issue where the water quality is low in the shower they have access to. Low quality water can have an odor people find uncomfortable, or it can dry out their skin making their skin feel dry even while under the water. People naturally avoid things that make them uncomfortable even subconsciously.

  2. Mental Health. I suffer from this occasionally. I love showering, it's extremely relaxing, but for whatever reason the process of getting into the shower is such a huge barrier to overcome. You feel like absolute dog shit. You know that a shower would make you feel better, but for whoever reason no matter how hard you try, you cannot push through the transition of wanting to shower, to taking that first step towards doing it. And it all compounds together to make you feel like an even bigger piece of shit for not being able to do something so basic. Until eventually you've doom scrolled the entire day away and now it's dark out and you're tired and you've got a stress headache because you've barely even ate today either while you just stewed in your own filth.

John Green and Nerdfighteria was able to pressure Johnson and Johnson to give millions access to life saving tuberculosis medication

There was a breakthrough in cat medicine research that is showing promising results in doubling the lifespan of cats.

Edit: Sorry for leaving y'all in suspense, I didn't remember exactly what it was at the time of commenting, but I found it https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/focus/en/features/z1304_00039.html

Pixel's all screening from Google has pretty much completely solved my spam call issue.

Set it up to screen every single call from anyone who is not in my contacts, And I haven't had to miss any important unexpected calls, or answer any spam calls, in months

The problem isn't a billionaire that's done anything good, the problem is a billionaire who has done more good things than bad.

Those don't exist.

There's no amount of good you can do to make up for the amount of exploitation you had to do in order to get to be a billionaire.

It doesn't mean that a billionaire can't do anything good. It just means the world would still be better off without them.

Pokemon Go. It makes a normal walk have a layer of catching pokemon on top of it.

I'd argue that time dilation is a form of time travel.

I miss Google Plus for this exact reason! I really wish they wouldn't have given up on it and just stuck to their guns. Kept it long enough for people to give it more of a try.

I've got a memory from pre-k where I was basically refusing to participate in nap time and got kicked out of class and ultimately kicked out of Pre-K entirely. I don't remember a lot of the details but I do remember not wanting to take a and then getting kicked out to go to the toddler daycare room something like that

Yes! This is exactly the kind of thing I'd rather see too. More directly financing the creators you enjoy.

No, they have a point. In hindsight, I definitely can see how the unskipable ads of cable TV resulted in a greater deal of patience. I'd be interested to see a more academic study of it, but anecdotally I definitely can see it.

Ditto!

Lemon pepper chicken, take chicken breast, slap it in a pan, fill the pan with lemon juice, So that the chicken is effectively soaking in it while it cooks, put copious amounts of lemon pepper seasoning on the top of the chicken breast, Wait until fully cooked. It's absolutely delicious!

My local cat shelter, if I ever become rich I'm setting myself up to donate there as often as I can afford.

I don't feel like I'm to the level of Pokémon professor, but I do feel like I would be something along the lines of a Pokémon teacher or maybe the gym guy.

Going with the flow is such an important skill that more parents need to put more of a focus in teaching. It's all about making sure that your response is a realistic way of attaining your goal in the situation.

If I'm talking to someone else and trying to help them through a situation like they say, ask them to think for a minute if getting angry will do anything at all to help the situation they find themselves in.

"You are absolutely right to be upset about this situation, and if you need to take a minute to feel that rage, go right ahead. Once you're ready though, let's take a deep breath, remember that we can't change what's already happened and instead be strategic and intentional about what we do from here to correct for what just happened"

Being able to gain control of yourself is a skill that requires practice. Intrusive thoughts and feelings and emotions happen to everyone, the trick is just recognizing when it's happening. When you recognize that it's happening, take a deep breath and shake it off. For me that means just slowing down and being much more methodical and intentional about anything that I say or do until that fight or flight mode response disengages. Be conscious of the fact that my reflexes cannot be trusted when I am in fight or flight mode.

Pokemon Go was better before they added Remote raids and they should heavily restrict remote raids in a smarter way to undo the damage they did.

I think they should do a few things,

  1. Implement distance limits
  2. implement friendship level requirements to send invites
  3. remove or significantly increase the daily remote raid limit
  4. completely remove the inventory limit of remote raid passes. With the implementation of a daily limit of participation, there is no reason to restrict inventory of those remote passes.

People advertising shady things is not the same thing as a malicious ad, at least not in the context of the point I'm trying to make. By malicious ad I'm referring to those things that pretend to not be an ad at all, they pretend to be the download button or a notification of an unread message, or something along those lines.

I may not be using the terminology exactly right, but that's the kind of thing I'm referring to. And YouTube does. A YouTube does a perfectly fine job at being transparent when something is an advertisement and when it's organic content. They're not maliciously being deceptive at what is an ad and what isn't.

Wikiverse

Yeah, but that discussion can still be legally problematic.

Sounds like a good thing to make on this side

Eh, apples and oranges.

They're both AR-Geo games, built on the same engine, but they have TOTALLY different gameplay loops.

Ingress is a team turf war.

Pokemon Go is at its core a collection game.

Grew a Pokémon GO community, became a Pokémon GO community ambassador, quit my job, struggled with unemployment and having no work available in my field locally, and seemingly no one but super shady people willing to hire remotely anymore.

Simply have the pages blank as possible, and use a pseudonym. Shit posting Is it going to do anything to make data less desirable. Just follow all of the typical advice for staying anonymous on the internet.

Also, insist on only using the secret message feature of Facebook Messenger. Those messages are and to end encrypted and at least if you believe facebook, not even Facebook can access them.

The problem is inherent to Bluetooth, The only way to make it not be like this would be to make things dramatically more difficult to connect to things over Bluetooth.

Most cats do die of kidney related issues, so by addressing that very common cause of death with cats, you're effectively doubling the average lifespan still.

Cats have an average lifespan of about 15 years, so it's doubling from 15 to 30 on average.

The reason why I suggested still checking up time is because sleep and hibernation are different. In sleep. Yes, your RGB would stay on. In hibernation the power to the device is completely shut down but the state of your computer is saved to disk and restored when you power it back on. With some computers you can even completely unplug the power from the device and plug it back in and when you boot it back up you would still resume without resetting uptime.

This is the new default behavior in Windows 10 and 11 when you hit shut down. With Windows default behavior right now they've basically replaced shut down with. Your uptime only actually gets reset when you restart, not when you shut down and then power on later.

I mean, there are other civilized pleasant methods for companies to make profit. For users to pay.

That's why lots of places now have an ad-free subscription option. If you really want to smash out ads, pay for the ad-free subscription service.

I don't use ad blockers on YouTube because the creators that I watch on YouTube are people who I actually care about. I watch content on YouTube from real people who I want to be able to profit off of me watching their video. Ad blockers are effectively piracy, your taking the content without the agreed upon price, in this case, the price of the content is the ads.

And I don't make that comparison to convince anyone that they shouldn't use an ad blocker, I just think the decision of where to use ad blockers should be made with the understanding that you are pirating any content that you consume while using an ad blocker. Are you willing to pirate something from some random mega corporation? I am. Are willing to pirate content from this niche 3D printing YouTube content creator that you enjoy? I'm not.

As a default, I do use an ad blocker, but I will disable the ad blocker for any website that I can trust enough to not have malicious ads, especially websites that i want to financially support. Because for me all it means is sacrificing a little bit of bandwidth to load the ad that I'm just going to ignore anyway.

We're not talking about what holds power in a court, we're talking about functional reality.

What you can get away with on a technicality in court is irrelevant to whether or not it's piracy.

By a legal definition, no, ad blocking is probably not piracy. I'm no lawyer but I would wager that Piracy is probably more strictly defined than that. My point though is that it is functionally the exact same thing as piracy.

Ad supported content is distributed based on the advertising income paying for the distribution. If you are blocking that advertising in a way that prevents compensation to the content creator you are consuming that content without the creator getting paid the price that they set for the content.
