I live in China and this software is cancerous not just in the encryption failure, it also nestles into a computer like a trojan. Creates 2 fallback installations and will reinstall itself after removal if you reboot in between, unless you get rid of all 3 installations at once, where they are deliberately trying to obfuscate the uninstall button (triple confirmation, swapping the confirm/cancel buttons and button background colors, etc.).

It's a nasty piece of crap that come preloaded on any phone (android, at least) and Windows-PC here.

Fucking bastards. I don't even know what beef they have with the community and why, but using THAT method to get them to shut down is nothing short of despicable. What absolute scum.

Worse. They think it's useful.

You might want to sign up with astrill. Greetings from China, we've been dealing with this shit for decades.

If we want to start our own traditions, why the hell are we copying reddit yet again?

The idea of a non-profit holding sounds great, but what about collateral damage if shit really hit the fan? Would it not be smarter to have a separate entity for each platform? They could all have essentially the same statutes, boards, directors etc. etc., so in case if one really got under heavy fire, the others wouldn't be affected? I know it means more admin work and probably also requires some governing policies with regards to the funding distribution, but might be cleaner in the end.

You mean, only on Android TV. They don't have a phone app, and explicitly stated they are not interested in developing one.

Then they'll install the Linux version. People here are so indoctrinated, they like it.

Sure. Foreigners aren't really sanctioned though, that's more of a risk for the locals. But even then usually only if they want to get someone disappeared and don't have anything substantial against them.

Nah they do a good job. They are having intrusive popups asking you to subscribe to their paid tier for scheduled searches and real time protection, but if you know what you want/need, the free version is alright.

Neither of which supports Chinese, so that's useless for any actual users of Sogou.

Um, no. It flags it for the user to review and urges a removal, that you can ignore. That's it.

I live in China and have a Xiaomi phone as a work device, and use all sorts of apps the powers that be don't like on it.

Didn't you post it this morning already? I swear I've seen the exact same content earlier.

Comes with a built in translator and spell checker, and since access to Google translate is blocked, that's often the only alternative.

I simply don't like them. There's zero use case where I would consider a foldable phone superior, or even equivalent to a regular one.

It’s also faster than chrome now I think.

Resource management is much better. Chrome will max out the RAM, which slows down the browser. Firefox handles that 100x better.

They have pirated apps? That's news to me.

Something tells me this isn’t the last word on the issue. If the fediverse concept is to succeed, then its two (current) largest players need to have some cross-functionality.

I strongly disagree here. They might be using the same protocol, but the user expectations are something completely different. I've tried mastodon and really don't get the appeal, just like I never understood why people want something like Twitter. And I'm sure there are some Mastodon users out there who can't be bothered about Lemmy.

Forcing them into one common framework feels like alienating both to me.

An inactive account is just an entry in a database. The impact on the server is negligible.

Nova launcher, custom made icons in purely B/W to match my background image. Some are entirely self made, some come from various online sources, some are AI generated and manually retouched.

Opening the folders on the home screen shows the app icons in color, otherwise transparent overlay would be a messy mix of lines.

(example with opened "security" folder)

Single screen homepage, no widgets. I hate animations and scrolling.

Sync Ultra and Adfree are two different things altogether.

Ultra comes with adfree as a perk among with a ton of other stuff, but if all you care for is adfree, that's $9.99 lifetime.

It doesn't work in China, if that's any indication.

https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTubeNext is the only app you'll need on a TV. It's designed for it and fully syncs with your original youtube account.

Nah. They don't know Google translate. Or Google, for that matter. They know what they are supposed to know.

Of course some people know better, and those are the ones who will eventually get around the block - finding and installing a VPN is not rocket science, not even here. But if you keep 98% of the population contained, the rest won't reach critical mass.

You can still run the old software without account, as long as you never upgrade. Some third party file hosters keep it around. We got an HP at work and I refuse to give them even my business email.

It does, but you need to manually open the https website, they don't automatically forward your request.

I'm using BubbleUPnp for screencasting.

I'm using bing.com/create (free access with an office 365 account) and then use prompts such as "create a simple black & white icon with broad lines for a mobile app depicting financial management".

Modify the prompt a few times or run it a couple times in a row until I find something I like, maybe modify it a little in Photoshop, and done.

Awesome, thanks!

Where'd you get the Sync icon from? I need it ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Maybe the problem is on your computer's end. Have you tried updating adb drivers and device-specific drivers (if any)? I've run into some issues with old adb drivers being present on the computer I was connecting to, even if the connection shouldn't have been going through adb in the first place. But some identifier was acting up and causing misidentification of the device.

Yep, long press any setting and it will create an internal link for you to paste that Sync users can click.

With the JWT secret rotation, shouldn't everyone be forced to re-login? I'm posting with my existing session without any changes.

Yes, something weird is going on. Being new to lemmy I initially assumed it to be a configuration error on my end, but that doesn't seem to be the case, I've been trying everything for the last 24h or so.

That looks nice. I'll check it out if I have some time later; though my written Chinese is fairly limited. So far the Windows keyboard layout did just fine.

I can't tell, I have a youtube account.

Issue:

So, I've created !childfree as a local community, seemingly normal. Only, it doesn't seem to be accessible to anyone locally.

Meaning, https://lemmy.world/c/childfree gives me a 404. Instead, I have to open it as https://lemmy.world/c/childfree@lemmy.world - initially I thought maybe I had made an error creating the community and added the instance, but trying to replicate it shows that @ is not a permitted character, so the problem must have come from elsewhere.

From other instances now I can access it just fine: https://latte.isnot.coffee/c/childfree@lemmy.world or https://feddit.de/c/childfree@lemmy.world (where the @instance is the default behaviour). Locally however, that should not have happened.

Even if I enter the community locally, and click on the !childfree just below the name of the community, it gives me a local 404 (see below).

Any idea what's going on here, and how to resolve the problem? Since we are redirecting users from our sub here, it's creating quite some headaches... And apparently users trying to subscribe from other instances also don't see any posts for up to 48h (tried that myself).

Edit: Apparently I cannot access the community via feddit.de. The other one works fine though - I do have accounts on either instance.

Yep that seems to be exactly the same issue indeed. Very weird.

Workplace policy leading to inherent familiarity with the system.

Plus most people aren't heavy users or particularly tech-savvy. Installing an OS from scratch is already too much to ask for most.

Jerboa asks for 0.18 to be installed, but works with 0.17.4 mostly without issues.
