There are a few companies making money from FOSS.

The two business models I see the most that seem to work:

  • free software, paid support
  • free software, paid hosting/ "SaaS"

Well shortened, but most of the meaning got lost.

TL;DR:

The big platforms are losing pull and users, more small platforms or group chats emerge.

That makes it harder for people or public entities to reach a big audience.

Then I stopped reading.

Is this also possible for Lemmy? Would be nice to get Lemmy community posts3in RSS feeds

What's keeping you from creating those niche communities here? As long as it's still a manageably small community here, moderating it wouldn't be much of a hassle.
