LK-99 is a room temperature superconductor. It’s a big deal, because it means that energy can be transferred with 0 loss and it doesn’t require loads of cooling to maintain that property (unlike “traditional superconductors” that need liquid nitrogen and other cooling to have that property). An analogy would be like if you got paid all of your paycheck all the time instead of having taxes taken out. The money you get paid is energy and the loss is taxes

There’s controversy that LK-99 can’t be replicated

Going over to the programming side, sometimes you’ll work on a feature and when others go test it, it doesn’t work. A common excuse heard is “well, it works on my machine”. Docker containers solve that problem by essentially (but not really) making a copy of “my machine” and letting people run the program/feature on that copy

So the joke is, if the korean researchers were able to create it in their lab environment (their machine), why don’t they just make a copy of their lab and let others use it

this is a very gross oversimplification, so feel free to suggest any corrections

I believe it’s a legal thing where HR has to track the ethnicity (if applicant discloses) due to equal employment. Basically the US federal government wants to know if a company is discriminating against a protected class during hiring and employment

This is a good move for wiki maintainers and users. Fandom needs to lose their stranglehold over the wiki farm “market”. Info like this shouldn’t be polluted and bloated with advertisements and it shouldn’t be able to be modified by the whims of Fandom either.

So basically the state has been ignoring the need to get funding for maintaining the units (a lot have been condemned) and to get additional staffing to screen applicants

Mass made a switch from local housing authorities having their own application system to a statewide online version. Ideally it sounds good, however there weren’t enough people to screen through the apps fast enough. And like online job apps, there is a way to “game the system” and loads of people would mark their interest in living everywhere, but would rather live in only one area

Basically a half-baked solution that the state fails to correct despite the 5-10 years of complaints from those working in the system asking for improvements

It is kind of a new thing, but there has been more activity within recent years for employees at tech companies to unionize. Most notable would probably be NPR, Alphabet, and NYT

It’s wild how short some videos are with sponsorblock enabled to skip almost everything. I don’t watch LTT for ethical reasons anymore, but damn, did some 10 minute videos go by in like 2 minutes

I wonder if it will be a repeat of last time where telecom companies took the money and did nothing with it

I’m hopeful that at least a quarter of it will make it to homes/areas that need it

The ‘H’ and ‘S’ in Rhode Island are already silent, so it really is a meme saying that they live in Rhode Island

It’s a subversion of the “I live in Spain, but the ‘S’ is silent” joke

As an American, I too need to know where the bag went

Millennial is code for young people. Anything above the age of 40 is automatically a boomer, and no, there is no in between

It would probably be Cane’s, because I eat there a fair amount and it’s like B-tier fried chicken for an okay price. If we wanna go international, then it’s Kyochon. It’s a Korean Fried Chicken chain with 1 location in America and a bunch in Korea

Second would either be McDonalds or Dairy Queen for their McFlurry/blizzard or their super artificial ice cream. Honestly, I know there is better ice cream, but I have an Anton Ego flashback (from Ratatouille) whenever I take a bite/lick of ice cream and am reminded of the trips I took with my mom when we walked over to Dairy Queen together

How it this technology related? Is it because the person of interest is a tech exec? I don’t think a person’s diet (or their oddly justified and unfounded blood transfusions) really counts as tech news

Probably iOS. I use AdGuard and sideload a YouTube tweak to dodge most of the ads on my browsing experience

Worse; Brazilian

People who give others what they wish they had. Sometimes people can be bitter and envious of what others got. I think it takes being a bigger person to accept that you didn’t receive it then, and you can still give it to others.

I’m mostly talking about things like time, attention, patience, tolerance, affection, and positive reinforcement/affirmation. Just because you had a bad time, doesn’t mean others have to experience it.

Personally, I find American candy way too sweet. As in one full-sized bar of any chocolate candy is disgustingly sweet, and makes me feel unwell if I get anywhere close to finishing a bar

I am American btw, and I grew up eating this stuff for a few weeks after Halloween, but then my tastebuds developed and my answer to that question is to “just eat a couple of pieces a day”

If you want an actual answer, I’d consider trying to remove willpower from the equation and donate or throw away a majority of the candy you have. If you still want to keep candy, then putting it in inconvenient places might make it easier to eat less. Think like keeping it on the opposite side of your residence where you would usually lounge/mindlessly snack and only eating it in a designated area.

You can also try to buy one of those kSafes to prevent yourself from eating it all too. The idea isn’t to depend on your current willpower to decide for you, but rather the rational thought of your past self to allot yourself a certain amount.

It’s like a cheat day, if you designate a day where you can pig out, it’s easier to maintain a well-balanced diet outside of the chest day

I think there was a community that was called enoughmuskspam, and I blocked it because it had too much spam of that thing

After that? An M1 Abrams. He just wanted to stop by and ask some questions

My favorite version of this joke was seeing NakeyJakey spell Drew as Jrew as a gag, which makes Anjrew a valid spelling too

As long as you follow the rules of the road, I’m cool with it. The problems I have are with scooter users who ride against traffic

And personally I wouldn’t want you to go on the sidewalk. I’d rather you stay the course and let me pass as it is a bit more predictable that way

I think it’s a joke that American houses (in the eyes of Europeans) are made out of sticks (stud framing in the house) and paper (drywall is made from gypsum and has a paper backing)

In European countries, their houses are made of tougher materials like stone, concrete, or some other material I’m forgetting about

It’s a known thing in America that stray bullets end up in people’s houses (and sometimes their residents) when it’s an American holiday like 4th of July or Memorial Day

If I remember correctly, a lot of oxygen comes from algae, and this is due to photosynthesis. There are startups out there trying to do CO2 capture with algae

I think there is only so much 1 person can do to offset the emissions for billions of people (really 100s of companies). One of the more important things you can do at a larger scale is to contribute to movements and vote

Mlem has been super buggy for me. As in I’ll see the same 5 posts repeated over and over. Honestly, the best part about Mlem is that it makes me use my phone less and less

Memmy is getting there tho. Memmy feels close to Apollo. I hope it grows beyond a 1:1 clone of Apollo and tries to get the finishing touches for Lemmy that wouldn’t be seen on Reddit

Ah, the pickup truck, the SUV for insecure dads. Or for office workers LARPing as construction workers.

I think the Ford CEO even said they build trucks for the working man, but I don’t think a tradesman has an unlined bed, a super lifted truck, or a short bed that can’t fit a full sheet of plywood or drywall

There’s new construction near my house and I much prefer the guys in shit box cars, minivans, and actual work vans. The trucks seem to belong to the LARPers on-site and always have the cover on their bed, because almost all the materials hauled in are on flatbed trucks

I like seeing when tradesmen pull up in their beat up 600k mile Scion xB or a white van. It makes me think that there was more thought put into the purchasing of their tools than looking at ads/marketing. They were also chill people to work with too

Yes, those lights you are talking about are illegal. Same with vehicles that have too high of bumper heights and too low. Unfortunately, a lot of traffic laws don’t get enforced

My work allows us to put PRs on the other teams repos, i.e. no forking needed. Except it requires access being granted to write to the repo. So some people fork and it results in a bunch of stray repos sitting out there. This results in search results being clogged up, and it’s awful playing whack-a-mole figuring out which is the true original repo

At the cost of “the funny”, that’s what I was alluding to. That Gen X is the generation between millennial and boomer, and that they are always forgotten about

Soon enough we’ll see robots argue against each other about tipping culture

When I applied, I never got a notification that it got approved, but I could post and comment on that instance. So you might have been in a similar situation as me or the admins are still dealing with a large influx of people

I want to know if the “autopilot” (adaptive cruise control) was disabled before impact so that the driver was found at fault. Despite Tesla disabling it way after the point the driver can properly react and correct the situation

Agreed. Like I can understand when you need a truck, you need a truck. But most of the time, those guys seem to need storage space that’s covered more than they need towing/hauling capabilities with a short bed that’s

If this water park is “across the street” (freeway) from an amusement park I think I know what you’re talking about. If not, then my answer is the same. Water park that my family went to and it closed in 2020. I miss not having worries and playing in the water. And also how Dippin dots was the ice cream of the future (for decades now)
