Fuck Amazon.

youruser:youruser just means the user’s group. For instance, on my fedora 40 install, my user (bippy, just a silly name), is the username for my user, but also the name of the group that my user belongs to.

So when I do a chown, I typically do chown -R bippy:bippy path/to/directory

If you wanted to give permissions to a different group on your system, but also to your main user, you could do a chown -R bippy:wheel /path/to/directory (wheel is an example group name, which is similar to sudoers)

It’s not that Linux can’t do what you specify, but that it may not do it in the way you require, which is based on your windows experience. Lots of what you describe can be done

For example, using command line tools like sed, rename, ffmpeg, find, etc.., you can do all of the text manipulation you can imagine.

But you also specify that you want gui wrappers, and in all likelihood, there are gui wrappers for what you want to do, but to meet your exact specifications, maybe not.

If you’re willing to do some adapting, which it sounds like you are, the. I think you can pretty easily adapt to Linux, as it’s perfectly capable of handling your high level requirements. It’s in the minutiae of how those requirements are met that is in question.

You could write yourself a bash script to do this.

Translation:

“Fuck you for not replacing your perfectly fine and still working 10 year old machine and making our line go up more. We’re gonna do our best to brick it because we want all of your money.”

Fuck capitalism. I will (and have been) doing my absolute to avoid buying any kind of physical device that requires an app to function

Privacy. That’s iPhone.

Unless the government says otherwise. Because really we don’t give a fuck about you or your privacy.

If you’re just doing a vanilla Linux install, ext4 is the way to go.

I’m familiar with a multibillion dollar international corporation that uses an excel spreadsheet to communicate between divisions.

Not email or slack or teams or the telephone. An excel spreadsheet.

The left column is where one division enters a message, and the right column is where the other division responds. For a new message, you start a new row. The file lives on a network drive.

If only. It’d be a real April fool’s if Canonical announced they were abandoning snap and throwing their supory behind flatpak.

For me, it was A Quiet Place. I found it incredibly dumb and impossible to believe that nobody on the whole of the planet ever considered that these aliens with ultra incredible hearing weren't somehow vulnerable to noise? Just dumb as fuck, especially when you consider that sonic weapons already exist and are used, and sound is routinely used in torture/incarceration scenarios.

Based on how the article is written, it sounds like no one would have noticed if his (now ex) wife hadn’t ratted him out to her bosses.

Watching sports/sports fandom. I just dont give a fuck about sportsball in any way shape or form.

Fuck Mitch McConnell.

What’s frustratingly awful about this is that US Senators and Representatives become millionaires doing exactly this, and the SEC doesn’t even blink.

Did he break the law? Yes. Is the SEC a joke and the law used to punish and oppress the proletariat, also yes.

I have zero interest in having AI in my terminal. And needing an account to even use warp is a non starter for me.

Obviously not, but the behavior already shows that Meta/Threads isn’t interested in being a good fediverse citizen, and in doing so lends more credibility to the idea that they’re aiming to embrace, extend, and extinguish.

Fuck Target. It’s just another corpo that’s just as horrible as Walmart.

I’d LOVE to shop small businesses in my town. Guess what. There aren’t any. Our options are Walmart, some shitty Kroger derivative, your pick of something like six shitty Dollar stores, and Aldi.

Edit to add: Even if I did have some decent local/small businesses to shop, I likely couldn’t afford it because like the vast majority of people, I’m an underpaid, undervalued wage slave.

And that she uses Arch btw?

I’ve been opting out of the internet at large. It started a few years back just disconnecting from social media, but as AI has begun to pollute everything and enshittification ruins everything, I’m just kinda done with it all.

I’ve been enjoying Lemmy, and I’m hoping Lemmy doesn’t turn into an AI circle jerk.

As a result I’ve been building out my server with services I want to use that I control so I’m not trapped by enshittification or inundated with AI where I don’t want it.

With all that being said, I know AI is here to stay. My biggest problem with AI is these companies gleefully gobbling up our data, our art, our words, our creativity, using it to feed and train, and to make billions, while we get nothing. It would be one thing if all these generative models were open source and freely available for everyone to use and benefit from, but that’s not the case. I know there are open source models, but the big ones are all paywalled and in many ways being weaponized against us.

At some point I hope generative AI becomes a boon to society. Right now, I’m too cynical to believe it will. I feel like it’s just going to make things worse for the majority of people.

It’s because they’re already part of the oligarchy, so it’s okay. The rules/law only applies to us normies.

That’s not going to go wrong at all.

I LOATHE that fucking google sign in overlay.

I noped out as soon as I read that line.

I so look forward to seeing an ad when I pause a video to inspect whatever is on the screen at that moment.

It’s not specifically anti-ad, but the lemmy privacy community regularly discusses ad-blocking as it very much overlaps with privacy.

The stupid. It hurts.

Don’t worry. With SCOTUS overturning Chevron this won’t stick. /s (in case it’s not obvious)

Color me shocked that a meta product is sacrificing trust so the line continues to go up.

FTC says water is wet.

Edit: in all seriousness, it’s good that the FTC is talking about this, and it’ll be even better if it does something to combat it.

Came here for the fuck spez. Was not disappointed.

That flag is simultaneously trash and 100x better than the current WI flag.

My first thought was, “here comes the subscription.”

Not that this is good regardless, but I imagine this pertains to wordpress.com users, and not people/organizations using wordpress to host/develop their own websites on their own servers?

Could be because, iirc, Amazon is starting to move away from Android.

Shit like this should be opt in by default. But no. Instead of respecting the users they count on ignorance, forgetfulness, and obfuscation for this kind of fuckery.

God, I wish there was. If there is, I haven’t found it. And I’ve been looking

What they’re saying: “we promise to support your device for seven years! Isn’t that great!”

What they mean: “We promise to keep our spying/data gathering/ad serving updated to the latest spying/gathering/ad tech to extract as much data and money as we can.”

(I 100% didn’t read this article and am 100% taking the piss on these shitty companies spying on us and manipulating us)
