I'm one of those creatures that flattens out fizzy drinks before drinking xD

Air-up water bottles. When I bought mine it claimed to be a better water bottle all-around.

Its primary gimmick of tricking the brain into tasting the scent works well, I did drink a lot more water without needing actual flavouring. The fact that I could (unofficially) 3D print my own reusable flavouring pods to be a little more eco-friendly was a nice surprise and the reason I decided to try it.

The "better bottle" part is utter horse crap. It leaks when tipped over, even when tightly closed. Their marketing team went as far as adding "sip, don't tip" to the instructions instead of making the cap properly seal.

Drinking from it was a chore as there was no water pressure and the constant bubbling (lets be real, its more like wet fart) noises made it impossible to use in silent settings.

I ended up going back to reusing a disposable bottle until it leaks even though the thought and feeling of something flavourless being in my mouth is revolting (its a sensory thing).

Don't worry about seeming dumb or noob-ish. Everyone starts somewhere. How can we learn without asking questions or making mistakes?

The /r/selfhosted wiki is still amazing and you might learn the terminology needed to turn your "stupid questions" into smart ones :)

I'm expecting to hike my rate of piracy in 2024 as I continue to take a bigger bite out of overall corporate profits.

I dealt with it by choosing to not have kids years ago. I didn't ask to be born, and I refuse to force that on anyone else.

Once things become too difficult, I'm pulling my own plug.

Sorry to say, you've mistakenly made one hell of a generalisation on that last sentence. Other than that one stinky turd, the rest is spot-on.

The truth is that if somebody was going to pirate software, then they were never going to buy it in the first place and it’s greedy and mentally ill to think otherwise..

I've been on the piracy scene since 2001 and was a moderator for one of the largest dreamcast piracy forums once upon a time. The core members of that forum are still together on Discord and we all buy things wherever possible. Gabe Newell is correct in that piracy is a service problem.

Steam cut my games piracy down to zero for the longest time (501 games, 414 DLC) because it was more convenient and had frequent sales. Other companies that decided to pull away from Steam and conspire with publishers regarding timed exclusives on a platform that doesn't want me as a customer (Epic). As a result, anything that is an Epic exclusive is pirated indiscriminately and seeded for several weeks. I don't even play any of them. Download, seed for a week, delete, rinse and repeat on the next exclusive. The same goes for anything with Denuvo DRM.

GOG has DRM free games, there's a site where they are all available for download, and I've discovered quite a few gems that way. Those gems got purchased on Steam because GOG also doesn't want me as a customer, even though I had decent library and bought several games at launch on there. I'm refusing to use a third party launcher to install games from there because once again, its a service problem.

Netflix cut my video piracy to zero between 2011 and 2020. When I moved across the world, I brought only my clothes, laptop, and storage drives. Everything I wanted to watch was available on Netflix or YouTube. Once Netflix started losing shows like Futurama, Parks & Rec, and even Sons of Anarchy, I went straight back to piracy and haven't looked back. Netflix only continued to get my money because my partner insisted on doing things legally. By the time she had enough in October 2023, we were paying for Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Ziggo, YouTube, Curiosity Stream, and HBO. At the moment, only Curiosity remains.

Adding up the 3 "services" we consume content from the most (not including the ones we watch one show here and there on) added up to €497 per year. My piracy costs €472 per year not including electricity, which is used anyway since the server also hosts a boat load of microservices like NextCloud which replaces yet another subscription storage. It's costing me €72 to rent a seedbox, and €400 at the upper-end for a large NAS drive one time per year.

It's a service problem and I don't think those who refuse to contribute to the broken service problem are mentally ill. The "managers" in charge are.

We have recently received a takedown request for content not directly related to these communities, but it prompted us to review other piracy related content and communities.

What a pathetic response. I am interpreting this as:

We will fold whenever we get a legal request, real or not.

To users on .world, I strongly recommend scrubbing your posts, deleting your account, and then going to a different instance. These admins have proven that they WILL buckle to legal pressure no matter what - that means also giving up user data upon request. Your data is completely accessible by admins. That includes your private messages and unpublished pictures.

Off the top of my head I can think of a few scenarios:

  • Being LGBTQIA+ in a country where its illegal to be
  • Consuming content from websites not approved by the Chinese government while being a Chinese citizen
  • Disparaging the Chinese government while being a Chinese citizen
  • Activism discussion (eg. extinction rebellion, antifa, the auntie network)
  • Right to repair in countries where its illegal to circumvent device DRM to perform repairs

I've deleted my account there because that TOS and so-called privacy policy are complete and utter trash.

To be honest, the extreme negative reaction was a surprise to me, as I thought interaction between disparate systems was the entire point, but clearly we didn’t navigate the culture correctly.

Noooo fucking shit? If they spent more than a minute on a proper instance and not milquetoast mastodon dot social, they would have realised that a good number of fedi users despise shenanigans like this?

It already is illegal, and euthanasia while "tolerated" is also illegal to perform by a medical professional.

What are they going to do, arrest a corpse? Fine by me.

Buying a proprietary 3D printer with internet connectivity. What could possibly go wrong?

Going by the linked forum post, Anycubic has been aware of it for two months. Any competent FOSS project would have nipped that in the bud on the same day it was discovered. Incredible.

Disclaimer: not lived in the US in over 10 years

I'm Deaf and used to rely on interpreters. The ADA improved quality of life immensely, as I only needed to inform doctors, schools, and employers when I needed one, and they would provide instead of the burden being on me, the person who didnt ask to be Deaf. My right to an interpreter during interviews, performance reviews, and meetings was violated several times. After a few reports, that got resolved.

Now in The Netherlands? Thats another story, we desperately need an equivalent of the ADA here. The discrimination is DISGUSTING.

I don't have any idea about your hardware issues. They're likely unrelated if the game has already been played without issue.

For the steam diagnosing, start with running steam from your terminal, by running steam. You may get lucky and the error is clearly identified in the console.

If that fails, backup $HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/221100 - the 221100 is the app ID of of DayZ on the steam store. After backing it up, delete the original 221100 directory and re-launch the game. This doesn't delete the game, but rather deletes the Proton prefix for the game.

If the game launches, copy any save files (if any) you may have in the backed-up 221100 directory over to the new one.

The above worked for me when I had similar issues when playing Batman: Arkham Asylum.

To be thorough, have you tried any other games to rule out your hardware being an issue?

I have the same issue and eventually gave up and got whats called a "verfrisser" in Dutch. I suppose it translates to "refresher"? Its a little thing that hangs on the rack that keeps it smelling fresh. One is good for 60 washes, or 2 months. The one I have is made by "finish" and was €2 for 2.

My apartment also has extremely hard water so I also run it empty at max temperature with a descaling powder once a month. I find the smell is greatly reduced for a few days after descaling. That may be why youre smelling it less when using the vinegar rinse.

There's someone running around lemmy with a creative commons sharealike link as a signature. Quite funny to be honest. I can't remember the username though. They're bound to show up sooner or later :)

I use it to generate code documentation because I'm incapable of documenting things without sounding like a condescending ass. Paste in a function, tell it to produce docstrings and doctests, then edit the hell out of it to sound more human and use actual data in the tests.

Its also great for readmes. I have a template that I follow for that and only work on one section at a time.

I don't need to, you've already told on yourself.

Oh damn, you're using the snap version of Steam, this is unfortunately outside of my area of experience :(

Some key error messages I see are:

/home/pokko/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/steamwebhelper.sh: line 53: /proc/sys/kernel/unprivileged_userns_clone: Permission denied
/home/pokko/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/steamwebhelper.sh: line 60: /proc/sys/user/max_user_namespaces: Permission denied

and

flock /usr/share/fonts/truetype/liberation/LiberationSans-Regular.ttf LOCK_SH failed. errno = 13vkEnumeratePhysicalDevices failed, unable to init and enumerate GPUs with Vulkan.
BInit - Unable to initialize Vulkan!

You've got permission errors and a GPU driver issue somewhere, likely related to the permission errors. The flock errors stand out to me also, as they are fonts. Maybe required fonts for the game to run?

Money. They are buying up IP instead of making it on their own merit.

I used to upgrade every year, then every 3 years, and now have had the same phone since 2017.

I think this will be my last, I only use it for whatsapp, banking, and doomscrolling.

To answer the direct question, BTRFS works fine for gaming. Garuda uses BTRFS by default and I've been daily driving it for a few years now. My gaming machine hasn't had an unrecoverable failure that wasn't my fault (not checking consple output for errors when updating and then rebooting). Games on an ext4 file system work fine - that's what I do for games I don't play often. The main NVME is for games that are played regularly and everything else goes to the storage SSDs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, it seems like you want an immutable distro more than BTRFS for what you want to do.

I admit that I am a bit biased. During the 8-10 years I tanked my startup by going all-in on Microsoft Store apps because I absolutely loved my Windows Phones and was convinced that they were the future, especially when Continuum was announced (and it actually worked!).

The disenchantment started when Microsoft forced developers to rewrite their apps for Windows 10 after already having forced the mobile devs to do it from 7 to 8. The hatred ramped up when they killed support for the Lumia 950XL 6 months after launch. I freaking loved that phone.

It pissed me off so much that I went to Apple lmao talk about cutting off my nose to spite my face.

The Playstation overshadowed it again lol

They can’t even use a lot of these IPs anymore.

That's the thing though. Gamers have a special kind of amnesia that gets triggered every time BIG_IP_OF_THEIR_LIKING releases a new sequel or edition. The communities on Lemmy and reddit are unfortunately not indicative of how the wider audience actually perceives games. We're a fringe group, and the publishers/studios bank hard on that. The uneducated and apathetic masses are their target audience. If the gaming world listened to the likes of Lemmy and reddit users, micro/macrotransactions, early-access hell, and half-finished releases wouldn't have become common practice. But here we are.

Fallout is now associated with 76 unless you’re thinking of Obsidian.

You may be right. Fallout 76 has however seen a record number of players since the show aired. That's commonplace with most gaming franchises when a film or TV series comes out. See also: The Last of Us, and SWTOR when The Mandalorian came out.

(I personally think of Neverwinter Nights 2 when thinking of Obsidian. t'was peak gaming)

Blizzard is a shell of its old self, cutting interest in Warcraft, Starcraft, and Overwatch.

I agree with you here. In reality, Blizzard still consistently has queue issues when releasing a new WoW expansion or game, even after all this time. They know it happens, and won't scale up for launch day on WoW retail AND Classic. Their target audience eats that shit up and I'm saying this as a former player that quit during Battle for Azeroth. No comment on Starcraft as I quit when the OG Starcraft scene died down on aus-1 back in the day. Overwatch 1 was seeing incredible numbers when I played from launch until Moria was released. OW2 being a pay-to-win shit show ate into their numbers until they gave up the pay-to-win bullshit. I see more and more of my friends and streamers playing it again now that Bobby Kotick is gone. I'm quite disappointed in some of them, but it is what it is.

There’s rumors even Call of Duty is struggling to retain relevance in new releases.

Good thing they're just rumours until the earnings report comes. Sony has poorly-redacted court documents stating that CoD is their bread and butter on the playstation. There's no way that's changing in the forseeable future (at least not in the billions of dollars range), even with the absolute shit-show that was MW3. When MW4 comes out, the diehard fans will forget it even happened, as they have with every single release since its inception.

If you post the magnet link I will put it on a seedbox and forget about it for a while ^^

From my understanding, we do, to an extent (as in no one did anything about it) and up until this year no one cared enough to actually do something about it besides provide lip service. 1 January was when we got a new website and phone number to actually report things: https://discriminatie.nl The wonderful thing about that is, I can report past discrimination. Due to my Deafness, the recruiters are forced to communicate with me through email. I'm a data hoarder, which means, I've got receipts, bitch! lol sorry got excited there... but seriously, I've got quite a few emails turning me down for work, even at McDonald's.

The McDonald's one was the most infuriating one, as I worked at one for 3 years before moving to this city; my application was several months after I had moved. I had a good recommendation from my previous managers, and the new location still insisted on gatekeeping with "you're Deaf, how can you do this job then?" before any interview took place.

Some sources for the discrimination claims are linked below. I've translated the following titles word for word, with more correct translation in parentheses (articles are in Dutch, the site should work in any decent translator)

Women, foreigner, or limited (disabled)? Then often discrimination feelings at work:
https://www.nu.nl/economie/6288886/vrouw-buitenlander-of-beperking-dan-vaker-discriminatiegevoelens-op-werk.html

State's commission: racism and discrimination work everywhere through (throughout everywhere)
https://nos.nl/artikel/2501700-staatscommissie-racisme-en-discriminatie-werken-overal-door

In the same vein, in English - they're all from the same site, as I'm subscribed via RSS:
https://nltimes.nl/2023/12/16/state-commission-discrimination-occurs-everywhere-netherlands
https://nltimes.nl/2023/11/09/fifth-workers-international-roots-experience-workplace-discrimination-nl
https://nltimes.nl/2023/10/30/structural-discrimination-racism-among-civil-servants-dutch-municipalities-study

These are housing and racism (also English):
https://nltimes.nl/2023/09/07/housing-rental-agents-still-massively-cooperate-discrimination
https://www.iamexpat.nl/career/employment-news/how-to-deal-racism-workplace

That's just your everyday discrimination. I'm not going to bother to go into the recent elections and incoming policy changes that have left foreigners feeling quite unwelcome in this country.

A toxic and abusive family, and my partner (marriage) is Dutch. It was an easy decision!

This past year hasn't been easy and it was the first time I felt any regrets and a desire to return.

It seems that I misunderstood your original comment. You're right in that piracy isnt the same as stealing physical goods.

My original comment was a jab at the corpos and using their terminology to highlight how utterly absurd their line of thinking is. I should have worded it better and used "imaginary profits" instead.

My mistake!

I am aware of that. I could also just use Lutris since I use it to install the games themselves anyway. My point is, if the company that wants my money goes out of their way to not produce a Linux build of their launcher in the age of Electron, I'm going to get it elsewhere and launch it as a non-Steam game. Its the same number of steps. Still a service problem.

Out-Run on ios for exercising

https://github.com/timfraedrich/OutRun

This looks nice! Will check it out when I get home, my tmux setup is becoming a bit unwieldy.

Over-explaining is my biggest issue. I'm entirely self taught and the trash quality of certain softwares with non-descriptive variable and function names sort of steered me towards clearly naming things (sometimes verbosely). That has the unfortunate side effect of repetition when documenting and it comes across as sarcastic or condescending when proofreading.

Its far easier to have a machine do it than to second-guess every sentence.

You mentioned a llamafile, is that offline? I'm using GPT-4 at the moment because my partner has a subscription. If so, I maaaay have to check it out ^^

Yeah same here regarding immutable distros. I've only dabbled in the reading and it seems to fit your use case. ^^

Keeping my eye on the thread for future reference. Best of luck!

Thankfully someone stepped in about snap... I don't like it and would have gone on a rant without circling back to the issue on hand lmao

As recommended somewhere up the chain, try a different version of Proton. Support for your hardware may have been deprecated.

From here, I'm out of my element. Best of luck, sorry I couldn't have been of more help!
