Another sign Reddit was never interested in having third party apps at all. They want all mobile traffic through their own app.

In fact, by the time the crash happens, it’s alerted the driver to pay more attention no less than 150 times over the course of about 45 minutes. Nevertheless, the system didn’t recognize a lack of engagement to the point that it shut down Autopilot

I blame the driver, but if the above is true there was a problem with the Tesla as well. The Tesla is intended to disengage and disable autopilot for the remainder of the drive after a small number of ignored alerts. If the car didn’t do that, there’s a bug in the Tesla software.

I think it’s more likely the driver used a trick to make the car think he was engaged when he was not. You can do things like put a water bottle wedged in the steering wheel to make the car think you have tugged on the steering wheel to prove you are engaged. (Don’t ask me how I know)

Christie was one of the first to drop out of the 2016 primary race in support of Trump. He’s also responsible for essentially ending Rubio’s campaign right in the middle of a debate.

His early Trump support will always define him to me. With that said I’m glad he is actually speaking truth now.

I use Proton Mail. I recommend that whatever service you decide on, get your own domain name so you can keep your email address if you move to a different provider.

Upsides:

  • You can federate with whoever you want and not be at the whim of other system admins.
  • You have your data and won't lose it if your instance suddenly shuts down.

Downsides:

  • Your instance won't be federated very well at first. You may need to use some tricks like Lemmony to get broad federated content to show up in your instance.

I find this moderately enraging

LMAO I'm dying.

I wonder how many people did this. I did, and deleted my posts as well. But I was mostly a lurker there and so my edits and deletes didn't really mean anything.

This would have been unthinkable six months ago. I’m glad the Ukrainians are taking care of business.

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t want that. I don’t want to start adding SEO stuff. If we have good content Google can figure out how to index it better themselves.

There’s a lot. In the late 1800s it started becoming something of a tradition for billionaires to move on to philanthropy after their retirement. J.D. Rockefeller was worth several hundred billion dollars in today’s money. He gave away close to 200 billion of it.

A more modern example that people have brought up is Bill Gates.

Any chance for a screenshot or an archive.org link so I don’t have to give the site my eyeballs? :-)

Well now how are you going to see all those ads?

LMAO. So, so true and I have no problem with it. Self-hosted seems to be one of the most active communities on Lemmy. I learn a lot and y’all all seem cool.

When a company says “a long way out” it often ends up meaning “never”. Fingers crossed.

Facial recognition by law enforcement should be banned.

Yeah in a way it was was a win-win. We all find a community we like more. Reddit maintains an enormous user base. I’ve found I no longer care what they do because I like this place better anyway.

“I feel like it was a political indictment, but I absolutely believe it’s true. And that’s my problem with Trump.” But if Trump wins the GOP nomination and faces a rematch against Biden, she’ll reluctantly vote for him, she said.

What?! So she does believe the indictments against Trump are true, but will vote for a criminal to lead the country?

7 out of 10 Republicans view Trump favorably. It’s nuts.

He should have been. Especially after the photos of Abu Ghraib came out. But it is the U.S. so he payed no penalties.

Me talking about my dad’s new truck: “This is the nicest, biggest backseat I’ve ever been in”

Holy crap DeSantis has triple the war chest of Trump and Haley has more than half of Trump. I did not know that.

If I ran one of Trump’s super pacs I would be irate with him and his legal expenses. I’d be bailing and support a candidate ASAP who isn’t wasting my money.

This is a fantastic point. The more the financial burden falls on one person, the more likely it is that at some point the expense will become too great for that individual admin to carry.

So from a financial perspective it makes a lot of sense to have many small/medium sized instances rather than a few large ones.

You suggest when an instance reaches a given size, stop recommending it. Totally agree. Based on known expenses for instances, it might not be a bad idea to have a recommended threshold (number of users) at which to stop or slow signups as well.

There are several places that would need to be updated when it comes to recommending instances. One that comes to my mind right away is apps. Several apps only list the top 4-5 instances when signing up. And default to Lemmy.world. It’s not a great situation to be in, but I think we can make a change if this info gets circulated more broadly.

Ugh, what a mess. Thought about this for a while today and three thoughts started circulating in my head:

  1. Hire an actual lawyer and get firm legal advice on this issue. I think this would fall to the admins, not the devs. Maybe an admin who wanted could volunteer to contact a lawyer? We could do a gofundme for one-time consultation legal fees.

  2. Stop using pictrs completely and instead use links to a third party such as Imgur or whatever. They’re in this business and I’m sure already have dealt with it and have a solution. Yes it sucks that Imgur (or whatever third party) could delete our legitimate images at any time, but IMHO it’s worth it to avoid this headache. At any rate it offloads the liability from an admin. Of course, IANAL and this is a question we would want to ask a lawyer about.

  3. Needing a GPU increases the expenses for an admin significantly. It will start to not be worth it for quite a few to keep their instance running.

Thanks for bringing up this point. This is obviously a nuanced issue that is going to need a well-thought-out solution.

I think he’s dead. But I didn’t know about the body double thing. The thing is, all of Wagner leadership getting on a plane together and flying over Russia seems so, pardon me, idiotic. So idiotic that now I know about the body doubles I am questioning the whole situation now.

I try to imagine who put them there. Someone who sneaks out at night, looking both ways before taping the antisemetic flyer down. Feels to them they are helping the world. Spends the rest of the day at the computer reading conspiracy theories, and preparing their next flyer.

Yes, but how about putting it on PeerTube instead?

How ironic it would be if somebody showered them with riches to go and create mayhem within Russia. My experience of mercenaries is that they are not too picky about whose money they take.

That's an interesting take I hadn't considered. There are plenty of parties who could pay more than Russia. They'd just need to find a way to do it without being caught.

I debated the same with myself. I went with Synology and haven't looked back. It just works without me having to think about it.

Good article. I would imagine one large stressor for admins is “how am I supposed to pay for this?” With instances needing to upgrade because of the huge influx of users.

The article suggests a non-profit for mental health support for admins and moderators. While I like the idea, I think we can go further—a non profit to help pay for running instances and paying admin and developer salaries. The names mentioned in the article would make sense for something like this (for instance, Mozilla. Also, how about the EFF?)

The box method of breathing for several minutes helps me in immediate situations. And I’ve found doing this on a regular basis helps it become a habit which in general helps me deal with emotions better.

As someone else posted, medication. If your psychiatrist thinks it is warranted.

Therapy can be a godsend. Don’t be afraid to hop therapists at the beginning either—find a good match.

And something that helps me immensely: I use this as a mantra: “I will not always feel like this. Tomorrow I will not feel like this. This will pass.” Treat these strong emotions as a wave you need to ride. But that wave will eventually subside and you cam comfort yourself with that fact.

When I worked in customer service this info was used in performance reviews. Also if I got an outstanding review my boss would give me a gift card or something.

In the game Dragon Age: Origins there is a tombstone in a random graveyard that reads "Multiplayer Support"

I’m not on Beehaw, but it seems well run based on the decisions they make and who they let in.

Sounds like a jerk. Hey if she wants to be a a manager maybe she could be transferred to a different store… 🤞

If you have private 1-1 conversations with your boss that might be a good time to bring this up.

This is great. I hope we start to see more drugs developed more like this technique:

With a combination of tiny lenses, microscopes, cameras, and fluorescent molecules, Parker’s lab can observe thousands of individual neurons in mice, in real time, as they experience different antipsychotic drugs.

And begin to wean off some of this:

The first step in his experiment was to mimic excess dopamine in mice by giving them amphetamines. “You inject them with amphetamine, and they run more. If you inject them with antipsychotics first, they run less. That’s the state of the art,” Parker says.

If you are feeling it is wrong, then it’s not right for you.

I personally don’t have any problem with age differences. Unless the older person is deliberately taking advantage of the younger.

Many people think sharks are dangerous, but shark attacks are accidents in which sharks mistake humans for seals. Sharks are actually in more danger from us.

News like this, and the 3DS store closing down, is why I purchase physical media for my games.

Coffee, black. I’m a regular joe and I like my joe regular.

I got a mini pc (e.g. a NUC). I did this after the price for rasps went sky high. Check out used NUCs, you can get a lot of power for the price.
