I think the biggest issue is that a bathtub isn't big enough for most people to float in without touching the sides. Assuming the tub is large enough, the epsom salt would work to make you float and would be cost effective. You would have to figure out a way to regulate the temperature to 98.6 degrees though. And you would have to be in a pitch dark room.

Wow. This is a Mastodon account posting to Lemmy and we are getting cross platform engagement and it's all working pretty seamlessly. This is the first time I've seen this kind of thing on Lemmy. The Mastodon users don't get to see the upvotes though, right? The @ thing when they reply is kind of annoying but it seems like a fairly easy fix to hide those when browsing from Lemmy.

I like the idea but we are not ready at all for something like that. It'd be crazy to blow our load too early and draw a bunch of media attention here only for people to come here and find it unusable. If redditors are struggling this much to migrate, the general public has no chance.

See where we are at in 3-6 months and reassess.

I've been following the stats closely. There were actually several times that the active users ticked down and then ticked up the next day, the most recent being September 19/20. But I suspect that may be a statistical artifact, whereas the increase on September 28 is legit. It looks like about 1000 new accounts were created/became active on that day.

User attrition has slowed significantly in September compared to August. We should stabilize somewhere in 30,000 range for MAUs before the end of the year, which is not too shabby. We are unlikely to see another big wave of growth until the code is significantly more mature, but the current userbase is fairly well established and self sufficient.

I can't wait until we get that next wave so we can have more sports fans and humanities types, but you guys are alright for now 😅

Called this becoming an issue on my first day here. Beehaw seems like a very sensitive group of people. Which is fine but just means we need to restart some of the popular communities they had on more open-minded servers.

I feel that I should also mention that I understand and respect the rationale given by the beehaw admins for defederation. I think they made the correct decision for their community. Just kinda sucks for us.

Many times. It's never as rewarding as you'd like, because the other party is rarely objective, and thus rarely acknowledges their defeat.

As far as I know, clock speed is still pretty nice to have, but chip development has shifted towards adding multiple cores because it basically became technologically impossible to continue increasing clock speeds.

You seem to be confusing Lemmy.world with Lemmy as a whole. Lemmy is free to be used for anything by anyone.

Lemmy.world is the largest and most mainstream Lemmy server, so they need to be especially careful about legal issues. If lemmy.world gets taken down due to mirroring content hosted on lemmy.dbzer0.com, the whole network would partially collapse because of how many users and communities are hosted on lemmy.world.

It's not even close to worth the risk. This is how federation is supposed to work.

I agree. I'm not getting nearly as much content over here, but I don't miss it at all. I didn't realize how much of my time on reddit was spent "hate-reading". It has totally transformed the way I use the internet; I almost never commented on reddit.

Lemmy has been an absolute revelation for me. I was so lucky to find it early on and I want to share this experience so others can have the same happiness. Just waiting for the developers to iron things out first before I try to recruit my normie friends 😅

Fuck Google, if Lemmy continues to take off we can just develop better search tools within the fediverse. The wider internet has been colonized, the path forward cannot rely on big tech corporations.

Yeah I totally believe that they break easily and are way too expensive. But that applies to any cutting edge product ever. Assuming the flaws can be engineered out, the fundamental benefit of having a large screen on a small/portable phone is definitely a killer feature.

Image Proxying

There is a new config option called image_mode which provides a way to proxy external image links through the local instance. This prevents deanonymization attacks where an attacker uploads an image to his own server, embeds it in a Lemmy post and watches the IPs which load the image.

Instead if image_mode is set to ProxyAllImages, image urls are rewritten to be proxied through /api/v3/image_proxy. This can also improve performance and avoid overloading other websites. The setting works by rewriting links in new posts, comments and other places when they are inserted in the database. This means the setting has no effect on posts created before the setting was activated. And after disabling the setting, existing images will continue to be proxied. It should also be considered experimental.

Moderation enhancements

With the URL blocklist admins can prevent users from linking to specific sites.

Admins and mods can now view the report history and moderation history for a given post or comment.

The functionality to resolve reports automatically when a post is removed was previously broken and is now fixed. Additionally, reports for already removed items are now ignored.

The site.content_warning setting lets admins show a message to users before rendering any content. If it is active, nsfw posts can be viewed without login, after consenting.

Mods and admins can now comment in locked posts.

Mods and admins can also use external tools such as LemmyAutomod for more advanced cases.

Media

There is a new functionality for users to list all images they have previously uploaded, and delete them if desired. It also allows admins to view and delete images hosted on the local instance.

When uploading a new avatar or banner, the old one is automatically deleted.

Instance admins should also checkout lemmy-thumbnail-cleaner which can delete thumbnails for old posts, and free significant amounts of storage. :::

As you can see, there were many improvements to the moderation tools and image hosting UX/storage requirements. There's obviously still room for improvement, but everything else out there has glaring issues as well. Mbin/PieFed are even less polished than Lemmy at this stage, although they are progressing quickly.

Also worth noting that most of the replies to the first post express a strong user preference for Lemmy over Sharkey.

Totally agree. Even when two commenters are replying to one another, there is always another layer where they are also addressing everyone in the thread/community/instance/fediverse, which obviously includes lurkers.

The votes shape everything about the platform, so ignoring the lurkers in the stats feels like it's missing an important data point.

That's how growth works on social media, it comes in waves. We are basically in the first wave, because there were only a few thousand people here before June. Its going to take a while before we build up enough organic momentum to cause a second wave, unless reddit makes another oopsie; they could trigger another wave at any moment.

The curve is fine, what you're seeing is the bleeding of alternate accounts. Many of us made 2 or more accounts on different instances early on, and many of those initial alts are now becoming inactive as people settle on their preferred servers. The rate of active user growth is slower than the rate of attrition right now, but that's only because the rate of attrition is so high. That should stabilize in the coming weeks.

Look at threads, their activity declined like 70% after a week or two. Lemmy is actually retaining users at a much higher percentage than the average social media site, it's just that we haven't gotten enough people to give it a try yet.

The problem with your argument is that the Gates foundation is a non-profit. They aren't trying to make a profit, they've burned through tens of billions of dollars in the past 20 years.
