Surely you'll get terrible chromatic aberration. That's got to be the only reason it's never been made commercially available.

Lemmy is like Reddit, but with an even greater concentration of Linux and FOSS nerds, so the likelihood is extremely low.

It's a suspect and an alleged crime until they're convicted. Media outlets and journalists have been sanctioned by judges for not presuming innocence.

Australian white ibises. They're kinda like the Australian equivalent to a raccoon in the US; they eat rubbish and their roosts stink because they tend to congregate in a single tree and then shit everywhere. But they are quite unique looking birds: long beaks, black heads and white plumage. So the tourists find them quite interesting and the locals call them bin chickens.

An Australian white ibis, a bird with white feathers, black head, long legs, and a long beak.

Hey, I've heard this one before!

I'm getting very tired of the privacy nuts. I get that it's important, but I don't want to hear about it all the fucking time. I also miss my city subreddit, but I'd rather hear about how Google's fucking me over for bajillionth time than use the Reddit app.

It still amazes me that your public safety agencies (police, fire and ambulance) are city based, not state based. Is there a compelling reason for that?

I'm not a power user, but I've used DDG exclusively for a while now and I often forget that I'm using it. I'd say it's a pretty seamless transition nowadays.

In Australia we have state based policing and the police live where they work. We have local police stations but the money and equipment come from state taxes. And our states are bigger than yours, WA is almost 1,000,000 km² larger than Alaska, and most of our states have much lower populations and population densities than yours. It can work, which is why I asked.

I use it when I need to log into a computer at work with a personal account, so that I know I'm logged out when I close the window.

Seriously, it's 2024. Everyone has to use technology now, so the software should reflect that. UX is probably one of the big barriers to widespread FOSS adoption.

The State Emergency Services of Australian states. Basically, they're state government funded volunteer rescue agencies that focus on floods and storms. They also provide other rescue services outside of major population centres, like vertical rescue and road crash rescue. I think it's a great idea because we get enough severe storms and floods that a specialist agency is worthwhile, but there can be years between large scale events, so having the surge capacity of a volunteer agency is great.

It's a similar story with the CFA/CFS/RFS/NTFRS¹/TFS¹/whatever's happening in WA¹, but instead of rescue they do firefighting. Their main ("combat") role is fighting bushfires, which happen seasonally so surge capacity is important. However, in country areas they also provide structural and vehicle firefighting services. I'm aware that the US have a similar situation with volunteer firefighters though, so I'm not so keen to teach grandma to suck eggs.

¹These agencies are metro and rural firefighting agencies, so their combat role is all fires, not just bushfires.

Yeah, combo is where it's at in terms of field serviceability. I pretty much always have a flathead on hand, but very rarely have a torx but set, Allen key, or Robertson close at hand if I'm in the field.

You should definitely check out Deviant Ollam and Mitxela

My first question when I read the article was why didn't they lock out/tag out the machine before getting in it?

I always thought that he meant "it's not that deep guys, they're just silly"

I've found work that I love. Only problem being is it's freakin voluntary.

Out of curiosity, why do you say you're really pro AI? I feel like I'm stuck in an anti-AI bubble ATM.

This is not a small grocery chain. This is one of the two largest supermarket chains in Australia.

Ok, surely this is a violation of the first amendment. This is clearly the government restricting speech. Wait, nope. It's the government ensuring its employees don't promote speech it doesn't like. Fuck.

And they looked the same, no cover or anything??!!

I've had some training in driving an emergency vehicle and I've been in the passenger's seat a few times, so I know that the one thing the ambulance driver wants is predictability. Do whatever you can to safely get out of their way. Usually that means moving over to the side of the road and slowing down, but if it's really slow traffic you might have to stop. Whatever you do, don't stop while you're in their way.

Tldr: stay calm and use your common sense.

Not sure what laws the states or Canada have, but it's considered child pornography if it's a depiction of CSA, regardless of whether it's an adult acting, or cartoons, or AI. I suspect at least some states in the US have similar laws.

Fucking Queensland, making an international shame of us because they don't know how to properly care for children.

With the side benefit of providing a fast lane that emergency services can make great use of

They still have shareholders. Public trading only means that the public can trade the shares on the open market.

It's rare and valuable and necessary, that's why we should only be allowed one.

Sorry, I heard asbestos was toxic

Not necessarily a mastodon app, but I'd love to see consistent application of markdown. The client I use doesn't seem to support spoilers, and I've seen others that implement headings differently. It would be nice to have all clients implement it the same way.

Yeah, Macs are apple computers. I probably should've phrased it that way. Anyway, given that you're not deep in the Apple ecosystem, it will be easier to switch to android.

Do you use an apple computer?

Development approval, required by a council before you build something

I highly recommend Science Vs, 99% Invisible, and Cautionary Tales. Pretty good if you're into nerdy stuff. I also recommend Endless Thread if you're interested in stories about the internet. What audiobooks have you enjoyed recently?

Cave rescue is a different discipline to urban search and rescue (USAR). It's unlikely that if you're good enough at cave rescue to travel internationally to do it, that you're also going to be good enough at USAR to go on an international deployment.

It's reckless, but unless someone with authority is being a pain in the arse about safety, you don't have a safe work culture that encourages that kind of behaviour. This is yet another example of the holes in the Swiss cheese lining up.

I know a guy like this. He's a great guy, very competent, gives up his time for his community. Drives his Audi like a cunt though.

I'm always kinda impressed when people can fill silence with a lot of words without actually managing to say anything.

I'd argue that creativity shouldn't be linked to technical skill. I've met people who have really creative ideas and solutions that they couldn't carry out because they couldn't weld, machine, do carpentry, paint, draw, or otherwise carry out their idea. Are they not creative? Sure, to be a great artist you need those skills, and using AI does not make you an artist as a result, but using AI to demonstrate your creativity shouldn't be demonised. Creating AI using other people's IP without their permission should be demonised.
