Other Fediverse accounts:

can live on [...] soil nutrients

Except they don't. Carnivorous plants evolved in soils that are poor in nitrates and/or phosphates, so they get them from their preys.

XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.

I love Mastodon and the Fediverse, but to pretend that we are not a nerd circle is a bit disingenuous.

No. It's a conflict in a highly urbanised area with one side (hint: Israel) deliberately bombing targets to cause as many civilian casualties as they can

This "problem" isn't new or unique to the Fediverse, or even to the Internet. It's much much older. What's to prevent someone from hijacking your name?

Most societies converged to a simple solution: surnames. The Fediverse is not different. "YourHuckleberry" is your username and "@lemmy.world" your usersurname. It is impossible to hijack your name+surname.

The entire strip is Hamas according to the IDF

The IDF issued an order to evacuate the north part of Gaza. So anyone that didn't evacuate? Hamas. And the people who evacuated? Hamas using human shields. Sadly this isn't satire, it is the IDF's actual justification.

Yes, this is a bit frustrating. Part of the scientific method is to propose new hypothesis, and that's what the original author did, so no issue with that. But then there is a chain of increasingly pop-sci media that hype some of these hypotheses as they were already confirmed and accepted by the mainstream scientific community, which is not the case. For example, the title of the article, "New research puts age of universe", that is pure clickbait, the correct tense is, being very generous, "could put".

And when this happens in a field like cosmology, it's relatively harmless. But the same happens in fields that have a more direct impact in the general public's life, like the usual "a couple of years ago they said eggs were unhealthy, and now they say we should eat 5 per day". And the effect is that people stop trusting the recommendations of the experts.

Exactly, and that's the reason why deleting a Threads account also deletes the Instagram account. Because there is only one account for both services.

Nah, Elon being Elon, he would use meme numbers. The API costs $42000 per month because 420 funny numer.

You shouldn't believe everything that is on the Internet

Well, there isn't a word for 99 in Spanish or English, in both languages we say 90+9, so that counts as maths.

If you are asking about words for 70, 80 and 90, that is a peculiarity of French, and not even all dialects, some dialects have septante, huitante/octante and nonante for those.

But what if they strike a deal with activitypub? From my knowledge they’re the backend of the entire fediverse.

ActivityPub is not a company or entity that can strike deals

Instagram has more than 2 billion active users, and each (non-EU) Instagram user can conveniently login Threads just pressing a button. If they're fudging the numbers, activating only 1.5% of their potential userbase seems odd. Why not activating hundreds of millions of accounts?

As for the posts, an average of 3.2 posts/users for just the first day sounds reasonable to me.

They have renamed the K9 app to Thunderbird Mobile

from defending itself against Hamas before Israel achieves meaningful security goals

Please explain to me, in what world "defending against Hamas" (which are islamist terrorists) and "achieving meaningful security goals" includes bombing a Greek Orthodox Christian church?

Does Elon Musk count as a verified source?

JC: How do you handle fear?
EM: Company death – not succeeding with the company – causes me a lot more stress than physical danger. But I’ve been in physical danger before. The funny thing is I’ve not actually been that nervous. In South Africa, my father had a private plane we’d fly in incredibly dangerous weather and barely make it back. This is going to sound slightly crazy, but my father also had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia. I was 15 and really wanted to go with him but didn’t realize how dangerous it was. I couldn’t find my passport so I ended up grabbing my brother’s – which turned out to be six months overdue! So we had this planeload of contraband and an overdue passport from another person. There were AK-47s all over the place and I’m thinking, “Man, this could really go bad.”

Holy latency!

They are planning to federate via AP unlike Bluesky

We know that they are using ActivityPub. Afaik, we don't know if they are planning to federate with non-Meta instances (or with instances vetted by Meta). It is entirely possible that they use ActivityPub only to federate their own instances and ignore anyone else.

Why do Americans always believe that Europe is a homogeneous entity? ACs are rare in the north of Europe. But as an Spaniard currently living in the north of Italy, I can asure you that ACs are super common in both countries.

Israel has full control over the airspace, seaports, and TV transmissions, in addition to imposing a blockade. Doesn't sound like "separated" to me.

People that live in denial of reality have a well-known right wing bias. Does it sound better to you?

If Israel intentionally targeted civilians not around the enemy because they elected Hamas as their government this enabling state sponsors terrorism, it would be considered collective punishment.

https://www.npr.org/2023/10/30/1209308436/west-bank-israel-jenin-palestinians-killed-raids-airstrike-mosque

Israel is also attacking the West Bank, where there is no Hamas.

Hiding amongst your own civilians

I have never understood this argument of terrorists "hiding" amongst civilians. Terrorists are people, that live in residential buildings, that pray in temples, and that go to hospitals when they are injured or ill.

My country, Spain, had a huge problem between the 1970s and the 2010s with the terrorist group ETA. But nobody was ever so fucking psycho as to suggest bombing the places in the Basque country were the terrorists lived. There are other ways of fighting against terrorism that don't include the killing of civilians.

They are targeting the enemy.

No. They are targeting civilian areas where there are maybe some enemies.

It seems that there is an alternative proposal that is more active, this one. It uses "tags" instead of "flairs", but the idea is essentially the same.

And what if someone registers whoisearth on Gmail, Outlook, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn or PornHub? Have you registered your name on literally every social media ever existed? This isn't a new problem, or one that is created by the concept of federation.
